Wood burning fireplace is a must have in Kericho....this is a place where everyone in the family gathers around every evening with a cup of hot tea and roast maize before jumping into the bed and covering yourself with 2 heavy Raymond blankets and duvet. 😂
Actually you can survive if your house is made for the environment. My parents have an 'American style' house in the Bomet area that was copied from the Tenwek missionaries, and it's built in the wood frame style, complete with insulation. That house is warmer than most stone houses in the area, and I think that I'll build the same. That way I won't have to spend money on managing the temperatures.
Thank you for your excellent advice. If you get some time, would you consider discussing plumbing, especially the disposal of wastewater and waste from the toilets, especially in villages without municipal plumbing? This has been a headache for some of us. Thank you.
This is a very helpful video. I don't really like tiled floors, but I will have to put them in my home in Africa because maintaining the wood floors will be a challenge, especially since you mentioned the possibility of termites. I dealt with termites in one of my family's homes in the Caribbean. It was a real problem. These things are relentless. Thanks for sharing
8:00 I agree, 12ft walls aren't worth it. Think of it from the perspective of a home-invader. If I jump over your wall, I'll not coming to steal your tv and sneak it back over the wall. Home invaders work in crews of maybe 4 guys. One guy jumps over the wall so that he can open the main gate for the rest of the crew. Also, If you are trying to use high walls to keep people from knowing what's inside your compound, you are better of building a canopy over your whole property. Simple tools such as google maps shows the layout of your compound to even the person in Hawaii. Solution Instead of trying to keep thieves out, make it impossible for intruders to leave the compound once they jump over the fence. This is possible by making sure the main gate can only be opened using a key even if you are inside the compound. The other thing is, smoothing down the inside of your perimeter wall. Make it such that there is nothing to grip onto for someone to climb out. Another layer of security is to leave a 2ft offset from your perimeter wall, where you can lay razor wire. If someone climbs the wall, they'll be in for a surprise when they jump onto the razor wire.
Very nice Prof. But remember Kisumu is a city not a town any more... Year I know that was a small sleep of your tongue. Otherwise excellent info received...keep it up
Just as was my observation when i got hold of your channel,i observed all this that you are mentioning here, the fittings, wall , floor finishings,i go for country House, less glossy finishes,, thanks for sharing here,i go for no or less maintenance costs in future,a country house for me is good enough for me ,no painting, but bush stone finishes ,the wall for me in mashambani is a no ,i feel im in prison,,i will go for live fencer and mesh wire is good enough and pet dogs to say hi to strangers 🙏

Wuon Odidi you are saying no need of two more electric wires? Hehe, my Hacienda have 14 electric wires running on Energizer to keep off Elephants and Buffalos. Otek small bordering a national park. Sometimes they crush steel gate and leave behind a massive destruction
@@WuonOdidi my home is adjacent to Shimba hills national park. Even though the park is also electrified, the Jumbos find their ways to my land which was part of their corridor many years back. They still come back crush my electrified steel gates when they are annoyed and go and come back later. I have a forest too so i guess i will get used. Buffalos are bae though. They grace outside my house so i can watch in peace from the terrace. Was home last week and there were 2 huge jumbos just foraging outside my gate for days. KWS come normally when they become wild to drive them back to the park but not paying for my gates.
In Texas garages are nothing more than storage places for trash cans, lawn equipment and outdoor cooking! Wouldn’t bother building them if Africa as was the case with my house design that raised cultural sensitivity issues and I had to change quickly! Neighbors started wondering why in an area where most don’t have proper houses, why a vehicle that is there rarely would have its own garage equivalent of someone’s house! An idea for your next video should be on cultural sensitivities in what we perceive relevant as returnees verse the perception of those that we return to live amongst!
Use diluted sulphuric acid to clean stain marbles, also you are right about extractor fans in our african settings. That is because it does well in an almost sealed room. If a window is open then or in an open space like our African settings it doesn’t work properly. In our home in the diaspora to get maximum extraction and efficiency you need to make sure all windows and doors are locked. The extraction will cause an area or low pressure which is the kitchen and all the un wanted air will be gone. Very difficult in an african setting where buildings always have their windows open.
Thankyou for your content
You’re doing great sir,new sub from Lynn .
Thanks so much for the information, as solar is my next project, perimeter wall, and the rest. Very, very helpful piece of advise🙏🏾

I’ve been thinking about going back home and now that I stumbled across your video, I’m taking this as a sign lol. Thanks for sharing

@@WuonOdidi 😆 it's a breeze, if you survived winters.
you cannot survive without it in most places in the highland.

i like your fence, i got a quote for wall that was in the double digits million KSh for an acre of land. what was your price range on the wall fence?
Mine was not too expensive since I used interlocking blocks: I spent less than 1M

Can you speak on building with precast vs traditional stone or matorafi. Durability, cost, etc. Perhaps using precast for perimeter fence,
Yes!! I will review this soon..it is still in the works!
I have told my Ghanaian people back home with tall walls are just living in prison.
Yes :) some people don't like that :)

Yes!! These are just turned into storage!
I'd rather a simple outdoor shed to prevent sun and hail damage.
