The reason schools require to bring a card for everyone is, IMO, because when I went to school the teacher would have students pass out their cards in a way where it was visible to the whole class who gave cards to who AND how many they got. Some kids did not get any or very few. So as you see, it was to save hurt feelings.

I actually first heard about "White Day" from Rachel and Jun's videos and it was described as the time where the person who received chocolates during Valentine's Day had to give something back. But this is my first time ever hearing about Orange Day... I don't know why... but the way that Shogo-san said "How many gifts are we forced to send each other?!" and how he explained "Gray Day" made me laugh. 😆

I first heard about White Day from the anime Tsubasa, Reservoir Chronicle. Where one of the characters gave the entire team of adventurers chocolate on Valentine's Day, and then they were warned that if they didn't bring her gifts on White Day that she'd be mad. None of the adventurers were familiar with that tradition, so the gifts they found were quite creative...
Hi Shogo! :) In Finland the Valentine's Day is referred as Friends Day, so it is not only for lovers etc. We really don't celebrate that day as they do in many countries, some may go out to eat at a restaurant or something, some may give gifts to loved ones or friends, but I know many think it is just another day among other days. 🤔😄
I always find it funny when Japanese people specify that Christmas et al aren't religious holidays in japan as if that isn't true for every country. Sure some people celebrate the religious holiday but for many it is just a consumerist holiday.
Yeah, but take it from someone who has worked several service industry jobs, if you wish 10 people a happy holiday, at least one of them will have a whole lecture about Christ for you.
In brazil we celebrate in june, i have no idea why, but i think its because carnaval is often in febuary, and most people get dumped bc people wanna go party in that time of the year
Grey day needs to be a drama/romance anime or manga series about a couple that broke up but still have feelings for each other, or a comedy about a couple that wants to spice up their relationship by breaking up in order to pursue each other again
Despite never spending a V-Day with someone, I've always liked the holiday. Was talking to a girl at the end of last month, everything seemed to be going well. But she decided she dosen't want a boyfriend right now. Today just feels bad, man. I had such high hopes. 😔
Waiting patiently for Burger day. The day lovers of burgers around the globe gather to feast at a burger buffet organized by none other than the volunteers. Can you tell that I love burgers yet? Gray Day, I was thinking, "What kind of painful celebration is this!?" Hey Shogo, your wide variety of content is helping my sister. Shes a 13-year-old very interested in the way the Japenese prepare and cook food, especially the methods unique to Japan, but she enjoys your videos no matter the topic. Stay safe, keep up the great work!!
I've been learning japanese recently and I'm looking forward to future videos. They say that learning a language means you learn about that culture as well. I hope your videos can teach me more words as well as ways of thinking.
In my country, it is usually the men who gives flowers and chocolates to the 1 person they like on Valentine's Day, along with taking them out on a date. We do greet family and friends a HVD, but that's it. It is a day mostly reserved for lovers, hence there are more couples outdoors than any given day of the year. That's why when I started watching anime and saw girls giving chocolates to the guys instead, I got confused. My first encounter of culture shock as a kid. XD
Such a great video Shogo! Question: do you know of a trustworthy website where I could purchase Obi, Kanzashi, and kimono-style fabrics by the yard? I am in the U.S. and I feel it’s hard to find because many Japantowns/little tokyos here don’t have much anymore. Thank you Shogo!
It's so interesting how Valentine's is spent so differently in different countries. In my country, Finland, Valentine's is called "Ystävänpäivä" which translates to "Friend's Day" So for us, it's more about thanking our friends for the years of friendship. :)
I one hundred percent fell for gray day, I trust him too much! Also I learned about white day from watching fruits basket when I was little and I was excited because that's my birthday so I have gotten gifts on white day but they weren't really "white day gifts"
it'd be interesting to see you explain how accurate the game Okami is to Japanese history and myth, since it's made by Japanese people as an entertainment product
I got interested in White Day after playing Persona 5 Royal but never had the opportunity to properly search for info, due to my work. Thank you for making this video.
If men in Japan are now giving chocolate to women on Valentine’s Day, do the women who received the chocolate obligated to return the gift on White Day? There was no mention of that, just that men return chocolate on White Day. And why isn’t there no Orange Day campaigns in Japan? Already signs are up reminding people about White Day, but I’ve never seen any signs about Orange Day here in Japan.
@@mistery1814 Yes, i know that. I live in Japan. But Shogo is saying that now a days men are beginning to give chocolate to women on Valentine’s Day, but he didn’t mention anything about women returning chocolate on White Day. So I was just wondering if Valentine’s will become more western in Japan in the future, where only men give gifts to women that are never returned.
Man in our country (Philippines) from what I've notice, everyone is just dating like usual and posting in their social media about their valentines and stuff, but the lonely get to make lonely valentine memes for fun to lighten everyone's mood (Especially using anime templates to make it even better). And here I am spending my valentines day with some food, games and anime xD.
It's the same in the West. Originally this holiday was only made for couples to celebrate. They going on dates, vacations, spend time together and gift each other expensive stuff and then brag about it to everyone else. :))
Shogo, could you cover yakuyoke and onamori charms? I got this charm that says yakuyoke shigeru and I’d love to know the history behind the charm as well as others in Japan
Okay. You got me on Grey Day. You know what? Let's see if we can go further with this. How about making up other 'colour' days for every other month's 14th on the calendar just to keep the 'gift-giving train' going?
I used to "celebrate" by buying the Valentine's themed chocolates the day after, but within the last few years the stores have caught on and they don't go on sale anymore :( I'm single and plan to be for the foreseeable future (don't waste your pity on me, btw. I don't want romance) so other than enjoying the candy this holiday isn't for me. When we were kids, my mom would make little gift bags of candy and a small toy or in my case, a Harry Potter book, to give to me and my brother for Valentine's Day. I really look back on that fondly.
Valentine's day in Japan: chocolate gifts, has two follow ups, is a huge deal anime and manga so it seems like a huge deal irl too (to me at least) Valentine's day in Greece: Chocolates are now 0,20€ cheaper and have more emphasis on love on their ads (as if their whole campaign wasn't just sheer and utter ✨love✨ already)
Orange Day feels like another effort to correct the declining birth rates in Japan. Really trying to make sure that couples that are together stay together. 😆
In the U.S., March 14 is known as Pi Day. It's where we celebrate the mathematical ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. I guess it's just as well that Japan does something different. I can only imagine what "Pai Day" would evolve into.
Shogo would have been among many friends from the US on team anti-valentine where you don't spend lots of money if you have a crush or try getting people to get you a gift but try to give things like time and attention which money can't buy, to me that's way more romantic :D
Glad to hear that Valentine's is becoming more gender-neutral. When I first heard about Japan's Valentine's/White Day traditions, I thought "That's not fair. The gals have to take all the risk choosing who to give gifts first, and then the guys can safely give back to only those they like that gave them gifts on Valentine's!"
Hi Shogo I hope you and your family are doing well. I’m wondering if you could do a how to video concerning UA-cam etiquette. I know this is completely off topic in reference to the subject above but it’s something I’ve been thinking about. In one minute short you did you mentioned how we non Japanese shouldn’t compliment Japanese people. I understand that to some degree but what’s the proper way to show approval on UA-cam. Say for instance you see a video post on UA-cam and you want to compliment the poster for their motorcycle or maybe she’s wearing a very attractive outfit how do I express approval without making the poster feel uncomfortable? And when do we use Chan and San? I don’t know anything about how and when to use honorifics in dialogue between myself and non English speakers in Japan. I know you are busy but this will help me better communicate without offending anyone. I’ve attempted to use honorific and it seemed to have a positive effect. One UA-camr responded back in English and it shocked me. I was ecstatic about it. I just want to be better at it. I’m enjoying your informative post and am glad to be a subscriber to your channel. Thanks and have a wonderful day 😎

Also another thing, men are the ones that bring chocolates, flowers & cards to women just like in most parts of the world
It's the same in the West. Originally this holiday was only made for couples to celebrate. They going on dates, vacations, spend time together and gift each other expensive stuff and then brag about it to everyone else. :))
@@大塒昭 ah yes that one too xD
Happy Valentine’s Day, I wish I could get some chocolate!😂
I think there already is "Valentines Medicine" and the world knows it as VIAGARA! 😂
Very interesting
6:13 Shogo, you evil!! 🤣🤣🤣
I love your videos and japanese history and culture
Here we celebrate on June 12th. One day later, it's St Anthony of Lisbon's day, and he's believed to be the marriage saint.
Shogo, could you cover yakuyoke and onamori charms? I got this charm that says yakuyoke shigeru and I’d love to know the history behind the charm as well as others in Japan
Happy Valentine's Day to you and your family !💝🎁
In finland we selebrate "friends day" (ystävänpäivä) instead of valentines day
Okay. You got me on Grey Day.
You know what? Let's see if we can go further with this. How about making up other 'colour' days for every other month's 14th on the calendar just to keep the 'gift-giving train' going?
8:30 same Shogo, same...
I used to "celebrate" by buying the Valentine's themed chocolates the day after, but within the last few years the stores have caught on and they don't go on sale anymore :(
I'm single and plan to be for the foreseeable future (don't waste your pity on me, btw. I don't want romance) so other than enjoying the candy this holiday isn't for me.
When we were kids, my mom would make little gift bags of candy and a small toy or in my case, a Harry Potter book, to give to me and my brother for Valentine's Day. I really look back on that fondly.
Honestly I think it'd be kinda interesting at least for me to experience this day in Japan, since it is my birthday.
Valentine's day in Japan: chocolate gifts, has two follow ups, is a huge deal anime and manga so it seems like a huge deal irl too (to me at least)
Valentine's day in Greece: Chocolates are now 0,20€ cheaper and have more emphasis on love on their ads (as if their whole campaign wasn't just sheer and utter ✨love✨ already)
I'd love a grey day that celebrated friendship and family friends. A day to be thankful for people you have.
Orange Day feels like another effort to correct the declining birth rates in Japan. Really trying to make sure that couples that are together stay together. 😆
sounds like an interesting tradition.
So on Valentine's Day you get a gift from an admirer and on White Day if you want that admirer to know you admire them back, you give them a gift.
In the U.S., March 14 is known as Pi Day. It's where we celebrate the mathematical ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter.
I guess it's just as well that Japan does something different. I can only imagine what "Pai Day" would evolve into.
Usually just giving presents and candy for me, in my class we give eachother valentines
"Which I totally made up"
It cracked me 😂
white day happens to be my birthday. Funny I'm giving something on a day I receive gift.
Here where I live: we just stay home and.. yeah. We just stay home, cook up some tocino, binge on UA-cam, and that's it
:')
Shogo would have been among many friends from the US on team anti-valentine where you don't spend lots of money if you have a crush or try getting people to get you a gift but try to give things like time and attention which money can't buy, to me that's way more romantic :D
Okay, Grey day actually got me. 🤣
I am from NYC. 2/14, 3/14, and 4/14, they call it orange day for all 3 because they expect hermes everytime
happy valentines day !
Gray day is better tho
Glad to hear that Valentine's is becoming more gender-neutral. When I first heard about Japan's Valentine's/White Day traditions, I thought "That's not fair. The gals have to take all the risk choosing who to give gifts first, and then the guys can safely give back to only those they like that gave them gifts on Valentine's!"
I mean most dudes take the risk in valentines days in western society it was about time the girls to a risk
@@jonwicked7031 Bingo.
I'd probably celebrate Valentine's Day in Japan the same I do here: doing nothing special.
Grey Day- when you can box up something your ex either gave you or forgot at your house, and finally get rid of it.
👍
I've made fami choco and giri choco for valentine's and ofc i don't forget to make my choco😂
I believed that Gray Day was an actual thing for a second!
Never liked Valentines Day, but the day after, all the candy is 50 to 70% off. 😁
