I love that Bible. It is beautiful. My ancestors are Mennonite and Amish. We had funerals in the living room as well. Yes, I have seen those dressed in white on going home and living in dark clothes all of life. I am from Alleghany county in Pennsylvania. I was a foundling in Lancaster county in 1987. My old mother and father, legally adoptive due to my founding, were Mennonite yeomen that lived on the earth. Their only advice to me was to always be employed (and yes housework was employment) and to marry a man willing to work. It has served me well.

My Grandpaw's funeral was held at his home in Louisiana. He was in the living room for a week, as the father of 12 , we had to wait for all the family, who lived in other States, to arrive. At first I was scared but by the end of the week my cousins and I were so used to him being in there we hardly noticed. Their home was old and the floors slanted and uneven. One afternoon my cousins and I were chasing each other through the house and Grandpa's coffin started bouncing because we were shaking the old floors with our chasing each other. One of my Aunts told us to stop before we knocked Grandpaw off the table his coffin was lying on. I was 9 yrs old at the time. I loved visiting my family in that old house and the memories are still my fondest!
Your granddaughter reminds me so much of myself with my grandmother. I followed her around and hung on every word she said. So in love with my grandma, she'll be in our hearts till the day we can see her again.

One can NEVER go wrong when they incorporate the BEST way to live, through the Scriptures! Going back to what I like to call "Basic Living"! My mom wasn't Mennonite but she hung her laundry outside, my dad had a huge garden. We had goats and horses. My mom canned etc. . It was a good childhood.
My father wanted a simple funeral and he too was buried in a pine casket. I remember my older sister (now passed away) telling me when she was a small child her memories of having to attend funerals of grandparents and they were held in their living rooms, which was normal for Mexican/Americans from years past...Thanks for sharing Tessie..
Until this day in Poland in small villages funerals are held in their living rooms. The tradition is to keep the deceased for two nights in the house. In the evenings family, neighbors and friends gather together to pray and sing funeral songs.
Some Mtn ppl here in South East KY still have their loved ones who passed in their living rooms instead of funeral homes & I remember yrs ago going to one. My stepmother owned a florist shop & we delivered some flowers there. My mamaw & papaw wasn't Mennonite, but they were very religious & very simple ppl . I'm very proud of my bloodline & up bringing! So many things you talked of is so different from the way I was raised but they are same as well. We were raised Catholic and we did our daily prayers each night after supper. Mom having 7 children stayed home till care of everything in the house. Made cloths for everyone any kind of material she found she turned into something. Old sheets into curtains and baby clothes there was nothing she couldn't make. I being the oldest always wanting to help she would tell me just watch cause I would learn more that way and I did. Now I know she didn't have the time to stop and teach her plate was too full with what was needed. But the house was always clean something was always cooking we had a roof over our heads we really had all we needed. And we always felt loved. Sending love, hugs and prayers. It always surprises me how similar our up bringing was. There's something to be said about Pennsylvania dutch girls. Although your's was Mennonite and mine was Catholic there are extremely similar. Many memories of my mother are also cooking and sewing and having the house just right.
I thought the same thing, even though I as a suburban Protestant from the Michigan suburbs! We had so many of the same habits. I was born in 1954. We learned so many things due to the Depression and WWII sacrifices.
My mother was a practical and frugal homemaker. She was also very organized and worked very hard. I didnt realize how hard she worked until I got older. She could work longer hours and harder than I ever could. I think she is still the kindest and most giving person I have ever known. She forgave and loved unconditionally. The most important thing she taught me was to love God and to read His word. I like hearing about your family Tessie. Thank you for sharing. God Bless!

My mother had several different clothes lines. When I was a small child, and dad was getting his appliance repair business off the ground. We might go for 6 months without a clothes dryer. He would sell those as soon as he had one running... I don't think we went without one much past my 11th birthday.
These Mennonite videos are so interesting. I did not know how they lived. Most of the ways you described your grandparents and their frugal ways are the same as my grandmother(bigmama) she did not waste anything and she made her own rugs and yard brooms etc. Thank you for sharing these stories.👍💙
We have a small Mennonites group, in Washington state, such a nice group of ladies, I met while I was buying cucumbers and dill to make pickles, they were tickled pink, that a regular gal knew had to can, it's sad because the old ways are dying off and if you don't share your knowledge, it will go away.

Love Loved Loved the video. Although i was raised in this world completely Americanized, my family always told me i was different. about 5 yrs. ago my hubby and i moved from California to Missouri, 2 yrs. later he passed away so i find myself alone with 2 boys. But i do not have the entitles American ideals, my mom taught me how to cook from scratch, i was never one to wear revealing clothes and i never cared much about hanging out with the girls on the weekends like you hear of today. I love being at home, i learned how to can my own foods make my own butter and cheese and so much more. Thank you so much for sharing your life with us.
Great values and love the traditions. My great grandma was a brubaker also. Alot of my favorite recipes are from her copy of a mennonite Pennsylvania Dutch cook book. We live in a small town that has a fair amount of Mennonites both buggy and more modern driving ones. I shop at mostly Mennonite places. Bulk foods, farm supply, green house/ irrigation supplies ect. I always leave a t shirt in my car so if I'm wearing a tank top and I stop by I can cover up more to not be disrespectful.
Tessie I was taught to cut out the bad spots and go on... One time the neighbor lady and I ordered bushels of peaches...I had all the pie shells rolled out...made peach jam,and peach butter. She said don't throw those peelings away ...you can make peach butter..I sure did.none of the peach was wasted.

I don't like to fill in open questions, but a lot of mennonites moved to Eastern Europe back in the day and later moved on to the USA. I'm not saying that your heritage is mennonite but perhaps they come from an area where a few Mennonites lived and they were influenced by them. It sounds plausible, but we never know.

Tessie you’re right about the bible, it’s truly a letter from our loving father Jehovah! It’s for all people young and old. Tells a lot about who our creator is and his thinking on all matters of life. So comforting and encouraging when we listen to his wisdom. Even creation itself testifies the qualities of the almighty creator. The prophet Daniel example of devotion to god teaches us so much about faith and staying close to god. So much valuable information packed into one 14 minute video, Tessie! Thanks so much! Many of the topics you touched on have so much to do with the way that people who live the Mennonite/Amish lifestyle seem to be anchored in -- can't think of the best word here, but I'll say - *reality.* They know where their food comes from. They know their neighbors. They know how clothing and furniture are made. And -- (I'm so glad that you touched on this topic) -- they know what is involved with birth and death in the family. When I was in nurses' training years ago there were fellow students there who had never seen a deceased person in their lives. It was traumatic for them when they finally encountered death in real life. Their parents had "protected" them from going to wakes, funerals, visitation, etc. all throughout their growing up years. So death was remote and "sanitized" to them. In the Mennonite/Amish rural tradition, death was a part of the rhythm of life. Farm animals had a given lifespan and it was accepted that the members of the family learned to recognize that this is a normal part of the cycle of life. The family supported relatives who were ill, and deaths and funerals (as well as births) often happened at home -- as you described so eloquently. Can't sign off tonight, though, without mentioning how pretty Sierra looks in her Mennonite dresses. Like they were made for her! She seems to have such a sweet, tranquil spirit and is going to grow into a wonderful young woman! Blessings to you all.

"We're too poor to buy cheap stuff" I am the same! Good quality is what lasts longest, making it "cheaper" in the long run! If you have to keep replacing stuff, you might as well have bought the more expensive, better quality item!

I love this video!! My mama and her sisters used those type of clothespins to make dolls for Christmas ornaments. They made little men and women all dressed up! My mama also taught me how to keep things clean and nice. I didn't grow up with money or a fancy house but we always took care of our things!

My father-in-law passed in his 50's and he was shown in his home. This was in a small town in the 60's and everyone knew him. We were not Mennonite but I think it was more common then. My Mom and Mother-in-law never wore shorts, slacks, jeans or a bathing suit their whole life and I was not allowed to either until I was out on my own after graduation I still wear dresses and skirts a lot. I love your skirt Tessie so pretty..
The first time I ever wore a bathing suit (1 piece) I was in my 30's and only did so for Physical Therapy in a pool and started wearing shorts, the longer versions when I was in my late 30's. I grew up with a very old fashioned father, he would tell me "good/decent girls don't dress like that". I did get to wear pants, slack, and jeans in my tween years and up... How times have changed!!
I am so glad that I found your channel! When you speak about your life I am reminded of my parents and grandparents life that started in the southern states of Georgia and Arkansas. They too had funerals in the home, and they also did a lot of the things that you speak about… It brings a lump to my throat which is a humbling thing Miss Tessie God bless you sister!

Never be ashamed of who and Whose you are. I love the fact that you don't conform to the world. You are true to yourself and that is what makes you sweet and special. I think negative comments come from those who don't have inner peace, so in that case you can only pray that God will bless them.
Your mom was a smart lady. I admire her values in the Mennonite ways. After my father died in Vietnam war my mom moved me and my brother home to her family so we were far away from my dad's Mennonite side of the family. My mother tried to teach and instill the Mennonite ways out of respect I guess for the family I missed out on. Thank you for sharing your stories. I really enjoy them.

Tells a lot about who our creator is and his thinking on all matters of life. So comforting and encouraging when we listen to his wisdom. Even creation itself testifies the qualities of the almighty creator. The prophet Daniel example of devotion to god teaches us so much about faith and staying close to god. Many of the topics you touched on have so much to do with the way that people who live the Mennonite/Amish lifestyle seem to be anchored in -- can't think of the best word here, but I'll say - *reality.* They know where their food comes from. They know their neighbors. They know how clothing and furniture are made. And -- (I'm so glad that you touched on this topic) -- they know what is involved with birth and death in the family.
When I was in nurses' training years ago there were fellow students there who had never seen a deceased person in their lives. It was traumatic for them when they finally encountered death in real life. Their parents had "protected" them from going to wakes, funerals, visitation, etc. all throughout their growing up years. So death was remote and "sanitized" to them. In the Mennonite/Amish rural tradition, death was a part of the rhythm of life. Farm animals had a given lifespan and it was accepted that the members of the family learned to recognize that this is a normal part of the cycle of life. The family supported relatives who were ill, and deaths and funerals (as well as births) often happened at home -- as you described so eloquently.
Can't sign off tonight, though, without mentioning how pretty Sierra looks in her Mennonite dresses. Like they were made for her! She seems to have such a sweet, tranquil spirit and is going to grow into a wonderful young woman! Blessings to you all.

Loved this! Thank you! Got tears in my eyes. Between 1972-1980, we lived in Lancaster Co PA, where I became acquainted with the plain life. We attended a church in Manheim called the Manheim Pentecostal Church. Those were some of the happiest days of my life!

I love this video!! My mama and her sisters used those type of clothespins to make dolls for Christmas ornaments. They made little men and women all dressed up! My mama also taught me how to keep things clean and nice. I didn't grow up with money or a fancy house but we always took care of our things!
Im not religious at all but i do like old fashioned values and ways .....not all but some. I live like you tess taking old values and infultrating them into my life . Makes my life better. Great video love xxx
My father-in-law passed in his 50's and he was shown in his home. This was in a small town in the 60's and everyone knew him. We were not Mennonite but I think it was more common then. My Mom and Mother-in-law never wore shorts, slacks, jeans or a bathing suit their whole life and I was not allowed to either until I was out on my own after graduation I still wear dresses and skirts a lot. I love your skirt Tessie so pretty..
The first time I ever wore a bathing suit (1 piece) I was in my 30's and only did so for Physical Therapy in a pool and started wearing shorts, the longer versions when I was in my late 30's. I grew up with a very old fashioned father, he would tell me "good/decent girls don't dress like that". I did get to wear pants, slack, and jeans in my tween years and up... How times have changed!!

I am so glad that I found your channel! When you speak about your life I am reminded of my parents and grandparents life that started in the southern states of Georgia and Arkansas. They too had funerals in the home, and they also did a lot of the things that you speak about… It brings a lump to my throat which is a humbling thing Miss Tessie God bless you sister!

Your mom was a smart lady. I admire her values in the Mennonite ways. After my father died in Vietnam war my mom moved me and my brother home to her family so we were far away from my dad's Mennonite side of the family. My mother tried to teach and instill the Mennonite ways out of respect I guess for the family I missed out on. Thank you for sharing your stories. I really enjoy them.
