If you walk on a road which is not typically taken by AT-hikers, people sometimes assume you are a Hobo instead of a legit hiker - this may explain why nobody wants to give you a ride. Also if you pass out on a road, there is always the risk that a car may not see you in time but you are near the driveway.
SAR on the AT is top notch, trust me, they know how to evacuate individuals three times your weight but of course you should never rely on SAR and risk your health. Also on the AT there is a kind of honor system, nobody would just pass and leave you unconscious on trail. If in doubt I would stay on trail. Roadwalk s***** because it hurts your feet and often your mental state because it's boring. Glad you made it, stay safe and well hydrated.

My idea behind the road was more I won’t fall off a mountain and get further injured. I typically don’t have an issue getting rides in towns even when I’m not around the trail, this town was just a bit unique even the hostel stated that people in this town don’t pick anyone up.
