Eerie, expressive and intriguing. Up until now I haven't investigated Maxwell Davies symphonies beyond his First, of which I couldn't understand a note. This one I enjoyed, perhaps even enough to hear it again (whether I understood it is a different story). I believe it will be a fascinating journey to explore his symphonies further.
ronald b woodall You wise, amigo (from México 🇲🇽)
One of his finest symphonies.
after four rather frustrating things finally a good one! marvellous piece!
I fancy that this is probably his most approachable symphony and I enjoyed this performance directed by the composer.
Moody and interesting. Thanks very much for the upload!
This symphony can only be described as "dark music". Whilst I admire Sir Peter greatly, I have often been concerned for his mental health. This work confirms my fears. But I still enjoyed it !!
How often a composer's fifth symphony, if they wrote one, is their best or nearly so -- Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Tchaikowsky, Shostakovich, Davies. Well, okay, Dvorzak's best is 9, "The New world" but it was originally mistakenly called his fifth.
Mahler's too.
marginally less noxious than his other 6.
