- The super sharp way to copy any film formats with your own digital camera.
A Checklist for Copying Film with a Digital Camera
Camera, ideally a high res sensor with an interchangeable lens.
Lens with close up capabilities, macro lens or a prime with an extension tube.
Light pad or box with even illumination from non textured surface.
Sturdy tripod or copy stand with a tilt head height. Add extra weight.
Negative carrier (Optional), soft weights for film, low tack tape.
Blower and brush.Black masking paper or cardboard.
Procedure
Mount camera on tripod and if possible tether to a computer.
Level camera to light source.
Settings on camera, Raw and large jpeg.
Turn off lens stabilizer, IBIS and auto focus.
Use manual settings for shutter, f-stop and base of ISO 100 or 200.
Use the electronic shutter instead of mechanical shutter.
Use remote release for shutter or self timer.
Use gloves or wash hands
Place film emulsion side up, shiny side down, (Optional).
Focus wide open on grain using screen magnification and or focus peaking.
Stop down lens to middle aperture or 2 stops from smallest aperture. (f-8)
Take test exposure, check levels & sharpness. Adjust as necessary.
Final check for stray light, reflections and vibrations.Dust off film again.
Take final exposure. Process file, invert & reverse image, add data and name file.
