Imagine World War 2 going a different route. Imagine German and Soviet pact of 1939 being just the beginning. There is no Operation Barbarossa. But a true alliance is formed instead, with Soviets joining the Axis forces. Could they change the tide of the war? What would such a conflict look like? due to the complexity, this is just the first part of a 3-part series.

The other problem was that they invaded the Philippines which was a direct territory of the U.S. Obviously they could bypass those islands to swamp the rest of the island chains surrounding it, but I can hardly imagine the U.S. or Japanese being fine with having battlefleets having a standing cold war like that.

At the time, Japan wanted to be self sufficient from the west and other powers. Historically the West mistreated the East colonially and economically and due to the lack of resources (oil being a big one) to ever say "no" to them. Japan would not rely on trade from the Eurasian block for long, but as a means to an end because if the Eurasian block ever wanted to effectively "black mail" (for lack of a better term) Japan, all they have to do is stop providing oil and Japan is dead meat and will probably become their puppet similar to China after they made contact with the Dutch and British. As a result, they still need to get resources from somewhere and if anything in this scenario, being provided oil even temporarily just allows Japan to more competently do what it did in real life.
Japan had to secure its own oil and other resource sites if it ever wanted to be a dominant power. If anyone could just cut off so much as 30% of it's access to oil Japan militarily is just finished which is what happened irl except this time it'd be their over reliance on 'allies' followed by complacency instead of the US forcibly depriving them.

You know it’s interesting to look at a possible alliance between Germany and Russia because even Hitler hated the communists and the Soviet Union, many in the high command still saw the practicalities in aligning with the Soviets because for one the soviets after the invasion of Poland still traded with Germany (until Barbarossa) which gave the Germans critical supplies and many many of their foreign policy advisors thought that they could join together and gut the British empire.

Impossible. There was a meeting in Nov 1940 between Molotov and von Ribbentrop in Berlin to try and bring the Soviets into the Axis. Their territorial demands were completely unacceptable though. They wanted the Turkish straits, a joint attack on Turkey and another go at Finland just to name a few. The Germans wanted the Soviets to drive into the Persian Gulf but the Soviets wanted territory in Europe. When the Soviets occupied North Bucovina, inching ever closer to the Ploesti Oilfields in Romania, that was it for Germany. The Germans launched Barbarossa. It was a preemptive attack that had to be made. There are too way many problems with this hypothetical timeline. As we now know defeating the Soviet Union was never a possibility.

I think all arguments about the relative power of Royal Navy and Krigsmarine should be more considerate of how insanely incompetent RN staff and high command were up until about 1943. The sinking of HMS Royal Oak; the disaster that was PQ-17 convoy; HMS Prince of Wales being yeeted out of existence; general fear of encountering Tirpitz even though the ship itself wasn't even that big of a threat to the navy 20 times larger than German. They even let Germany move two pocket battleships with escort (that were supposed to participate in Land Lease interdiction) through English Channel completely unopposed. For all we know Royal Navy would be finishing their tea in London by the time Germans landed in Dover and Soviets paradropped in Aberdeen.

Yeah, they'd lack both the production ability and logistics to win the war in the long term. By the time the US joined, the British would be well secured and likely using their Imperial territories to supply the US with all the material needed to outproduce the germans and Soviets. By the time 43 comes around the US and British would have wiped out the Luftwaffe and begun destroying german infrastructure. By 44 the allies would have landed in france and begun pushing west. Germany falls by 46 with the help of atomic bombs on Berlin and Dresden and wherever else they are needed. The soviets run out of gas a few years after that. Call it 1950-52 before they fall.

As much of a nightmare scenario as this would be for the Brits, its very difficult to see how such an alliance could hold. Yes, a well-oiled Germany could conduct longer, more sustained operations. But Hitler's eyes were toward establishing colonies in the east; no such "colonization" was available in the west. Long-term, this alliance would be illogical on strategic grounds, as the Soviets would get more out of it than the Germans. Stalin could effectively use Hitler as a battering ram against the Western powers, but Germany would effectively be denied an ability to project power eastward.

Britain only did not declare way when they invaded poland because he knew the alliance was one of convenience and was hoping hitler would backstab him. One consideration for this scenario is that Japan only declared war on the US because of heavy harassment of Japanese supply lines. If the alliance in Europe changes the US's focus away from the pacific, they may never harass the Japanese, or not enough for them to bother declaring war. Russia may also be able to swing the war between Japan and China, possibly leading to a full take over of Asia.
Germany might also take European mainland and fortify it and leave the UK alone until they rebuild. Setting up for a surprise attack sometime in the future and adopt their blitzkriege strategy to a landing on UK.

Europe was mainly a land and air war, the US wouldn't need more ships there if the Royal Navy was still sailing. At Midway American forces were already quite small (compared to the Japanese), it doesn't make sense they would shift those forces to Europe when the more immediate threat (in 1942) was Japan. Also Midway was only fought because the Americans had advance knowledge and chose to attack, if they didn't think they could win they would have let the Japanese take the island
