Correcting something you said near the beginning. And it's important to know. Which I don't think you do. These only work with ef lenses that have manual focus rings that are completely independent from the camera. In terms of canons lenses this is very rare. But you can buy the lenses that are used for other optical snoots. My snoot came with an 85mm. I purchased a 50mm and an 150mm of Ali express for around $100 for both. Love them. Also the 85 and the 150 do not have aperture blades. The 50 does but you want to open them up all the way. Seems that all the optical snoots that come with ef 50mm lenses all have the blades. Sucks because they are not needed. I'd rather them not be there. But I can use it on my old camera for fun.
I know someone that ordered some cheap canon lenses thinking they would work with her snoot. I immediately told her to cancel the order. Luckily she mentioned it to me soon enough.

Rather than having to use Canon lenses, just because it has an EF mount, there are lots of Nikon ( fit) manual, focus and aperture around and for projecting they don’t need to be critical quality, and they will fit an EF mount with a cheap adapter.

    • @fostervf16
      @fostervf16 4 місяці тому

@@russellbaston974 I'm not sure they would work for snoots like these. The lens needs to fit right where the opening is. Unlike a camera this is out not in. But maybe if the adapter is something like a speed booster with a glass element it would work. It may also work as you said. However, you can save a lot of money by getting lenses like I did for very cheap. The snoot lenses are not like regular camera lenses. They are extremely basic. I got two for cheaper than the cost of an adapter.
There are some snoots on the market that you can option for a nikon mount.

@@fostervf16 It does work ok, I use this method, on an earlier model Godox EF fitting projection snoot, the EF mount is larger than the Nikon so the lens fits ‘flush’ in the middle of the mount. Similar applies to m42 lenses with an adapter.

99% of EF lenses have fully manually controlled focus rings; it's just a very few of them that needs current from the camera to move the motor, like 50 f1 or 85 f1.2 (or the two pancakes 24 ef-s and 40 ef) and those are certainly not cheapo lenses you would use in front of the projector, albeit they are super bright. It's the manual independent aperture control that on Canon EF lenses was never available, as they all have electronic controlled diaphragms. But still, you can overcome even that issue if you have a working Canon body, you just close the aperture via the DoF button on the camera, and remove the lens while holding the DoF button down, the lens will come out with the iris locked in the f-stop position you selected previously.

This is my question too. My assumption is just one that would fit the extruded light tube found on a studio flash, and the other one doesn't. but such a minimal change doesn't justify the need to release 2 different models.

    • @robhallphoto
      @robhallphoto  4 місяці тому +1

It’s simply optimizing for position of the light source relative to the rear optic of the projection system. A chip sits closer to the Bowens mount than a flash tube, which affects the rear optic / optic placement that would best suit it. This helps to prevent things like light leaks, and is why there hasn’t been a system that works great for all the flashes AND LEDs.
The LED one confused me because the VSA kit is already great. Unless they simply wanted to have a system that could share optics across flash/LED by simply changing the mount. Or maybe it was a layup once it was designed for flash to introduce an EF mount option to LED users as well.

@@robhallphoto yes, I've been struggling with that question as well, because I wanted to get the VSA Kit, until I saw that GODOX released the BLP (Led)! Now I am torn between the two!
(Photography is hobby for me & as such, I only have a small space - An SL300iii Led &/or a coupla of AD200pros will be used with the kit)
My thoughts concerning which one to choose seem relevant to this discussion:
      GODOX BLP / BFP System:
      Pros:
Compact Size: The BLP is smaller and more suitable for limited spaces.
Cost-Effective: Generally cheaper than the VSA system, both in initial purchase and accessory costs.
Accessory Compatibility: Utilizes SA accessories (again, smaller and less expensive.) The MLP-ID Iris attachment, for example, is more affordable than the VSA-ID iris.
Lens Variety: Presently offers four lens options (from Godox), providing flexibility in beam shaping and size.
Ease Of Use: 360° rotatable design for gobo adjustments.
      Cons:
Separate Unit for Strobes: Requires the purchase of an additional BFP unit for strobe compatibility, which could be inconvenient compared to an all-in-one solution. (*due to the build differences between Strobes & Leds; presently there is no all-in-one solution!)
Light Intensity: Does not increase the light intensity as the VSA’s ellipsoidal spotlight attachment does.
      GODOX VSA System:
      Pros:
Light Intensification: The ellipsoidal spotlight attachment is designed to intensify the light, making it more powerful.
LED Design: Optimized for use with LED lights, providing a clear and focused beam.
      Cons:
Strobe Compatibility: Limited compatibility with strobes; larger strobe units do not fit.
Lens Options: Only three lens options available, which are larger and more expensive (e.g., the narrow 19° lens costs over 250 euros in the EU market).
Size of Accessories: Gobos and other accessories are larger and more costly, which might be a consideration for budget-conscious users.
Space Requirements: The VSA is a larger unit and may require a more spacious studio setup.
      Additional Considerations:
The GODOX VSA Spotlight Kit, being an ellipsoidal spotlight attachment, is designed to focus and intensify the light from the source. This is achieved through its optical design, which directs more of the light towards a specific area, increasing the intensity within that spot.
On the other hand, a normal optical snoot like the GODOX BLP Projector is primarily designed to shape and control the light, which can involve focusing it into a narrower beam. However, this process doesn’t necessarily intensify the overall light output; instead, it redistributes the existing light. Due to the nature of optics, some light loss is expected as the light passes through various elements like lenses and gobos.
Studio Space: If you have a small studio, the BLP’s compact size (and wide-angle lens options) might be more practical.
Budget: The BLP system’s cost-effectiveness could be a deciding factor if you’re looking for a balance between functionality and price.
I, myself will probably go with the BLP as it's more cost effective (than the VSA). Plus, it's more compact (than the VSA), which is better for my limited space.
+ Gobos & Led light are easier & quicker to adjust than Strobes & Gobos!
+ The 85mm lens that comes with the BLP is probably suitable for my small space (& creative flexibility can be cost effectively expanded via a 65 mm (the 45 mm has more coverage, but's somewhat large & also more expensive! 150 mm is too narrow for my needs).
+ The BLP seems to have diffusion - good, considering the newer SL300iii does not have a diffusion cap over the COB array like the older models (which may cause a 'cob-pattern' to be visible when using Go-Betweens. )
+ SL300III Led light has 320 watts, close enough to the 300w limit & (even with some light loss due to the BLP) is more than enough for the hobby sector.
Of course I welcome any corrections or advice concerning my thoughts listed above!
*sorry, I may have obsessively used your comment section to help myself, with deciding! 🤣

I've had this for about a month and really enjoying it! Seems to be much higher quality than the cheaper Amazon/Aliexpress alternatives, and even better than the Westcott Optical Spot!
The lens is very sharp and doesn't give me any vignetting, overall a great setup.
Works great with every gobo I've thrown into it (M-Sized, 66mm)
The only issue I had, was with the MLP-ID "Iris Diaphragm".. For whatever reason, Adorama seems to be the only retailer carrying this, and their stock of it is NOT the correct product. I ordered twice and went through a nightmare of a return (twice!). Wait until new stock comes in elsewhere before buying -- it's unfortunately, since it's an accessory I definitely want!
I do also wish the carrying bag had a bit more space in it! There isn't much extra room to add more gobos, lenses or even flash gels since it's pretty packed

      @robhallphoto  4 місяці тому +1

Yes I think it’s better than the Westcott Optical Spot too (although my biggest problem with the Westcott Optical Spot is its markup over the Jinbei model it’s rebranded from).
Is the Iris control you mentioned the one meant for the VSA?
And regarding the case, I feel as though you must have it configured differently than me as I can get everything in it just barely.
Bowens portion on the right, obviously. Lens bottom left with gel holder set atop the rear mount. Iris, gobos, gels in the top left.

@@robhallphoto yes, the MLP-ID is used for a couple different godox optical spots, the VSA and the BFP/BLP. The one Adorama is sending is missing the "holder" piece, despite it being necessary for it. They keep suggesting you use the gobo holder, but it clearly doesn't fit. Godox has acknowledged that Adorama has bad/defective stock so it looks like they pulled it, but hopefully it comes back soon!
As for configuring the bag, it does hold everything but it's so tight! I have about 50 gobos for it as well as the gels (and soon the MLp-ID when it gets fixed!) And it's tough fitting more than what comes with the set inside the bag!

Well an FV200 full power “flash” is equivalent to an AD400 Pro @ 1/16 +.2 So from the jump that’s a 4 stop difference. Yes that is correct, but VSA attachment actually increases output 3-6 times depending on lens. BFP attachments decrease attachments 2-3 stops i would imagine.
