The field of mental health care was truly in it's infancy at that time. We were still in the "blame the victim" years. When shooting The Prince and the Showgirl she was prescribed barbiturates which eventually killed her. Her doctor's at the time of her death would have at least have lost their licenses if not charged criminally. I was a psychotherapist for many years and I know that what happened would be malpractice today. I suppose that there are practices we use now that will be considered barbaric in the future. I suspect that we all think that we have the answer in the moment. Still, it is so sad that this brief shining star was lost in the prime of here life.
