One of my favorite movie moments. In an interview, Meryl said this was the last scene they filmed, and they had the wrap party right after. What a great time that must’ve been. She says she wanted to be an opera singer, and took lessons toward that when she was young. Hard to believe that just because she doesn’t have the pipes for opera, she thinks her voice isn’t good enough for her to do recordings, etc. So unfortunate. Wish the clip included the whole performance.
She is very talented, and she did this song for the movie and shit she can sing a country song ! I always remember seeing the movie on TV then this scene near the end where she sings, well I sort of sat dumbfounded at how good she sounded , they got her exactly right for the range and when she had to hit higher they had that worked out too. It was a great bit of movie making and a talented actress who in fact is not really a singer , but they got her right this time.I always go back and have a listen.
Be careful guys, she's the love of my life. in my dreams, she'd be singing this song to me nightly! 💕 Let's not forget to give credit where credit is due, Shel Silverstein (from the "Dr Hook and the medicine show" fame was the one who wrote this fine song! 👍😇
@@DippyHippie I'm so sorry that they excluded you from enjoying it, that's really terrible & it's such a wonderful song, however you can read the lyrics she's singing by going to Google and typing in the search bar "What are the lyrics to the song I'm Checking out", by Shel Silverstein. That should pull up the lyrics for you to read.. If I were you, I'd get in touch with the producers of the movie & complain that there's no CC, when they see they're missing fans & potential customers they may get on the ball & hopefully change their packaging to include it on all their videos and movies! You write a petition & I'll be glad to sign it with you! Best of luck my friend. 😀 If I can help you with anything, write me a note & I'll do my best.👍
I absolutely love this movie and Meryl's performance! I've owned this movie since it came out on VHS AND DVD. Love, love, love this song, too! I'm reminded of this quote: 'Recovery didn't open up the gates of Heaven to let me in, it opened up the gates of hell to let me out.' Source Unknown RIP Carrie Fisher!
She is an amazing talent! A few years ago she did a movie called Rikki and the Flash. She sings Rock and Roll while playing rhythm guitar. Very raw performance from her in that she loses herself in the character. Great movie. Rick Springfield is her boyfriend and lead guitarist in the movie.
Pull back them dark and dusty drapes, And let in some light. Tell the bell-boy come and get my trunk 'Cause I'm leavin' here tonight. I packed my bags and paid my bill, And I'm turnin' in my key. And if those sad souls down in the lobby ask for me, Just tell'em I'm checkin' out of the heartbreak hotel. I ain't gonna live on lonely street no more (no more). I've found a new love and a new place to dwell Where teardrops ain't soakin' the floor. So, take down my suitcase and hand me my hat. I'm goin' from sleazy to swell. Give that desk-clerk a dime. And you can just tell him that I'm Checkin' out of the heartbreak hotel. Well, you can give that sad bellboy My old blues guitar, 'Cause I'm only gonna sing them sweet songs From now on, yeah. And you can tell that old bartender He might as well close down the bar, Cause "Chug-a-Luggin' Sally's" (Charley's) packed an' gone. Through that gray windowpane, It always looked like rain, But there's sunshine outside I can tell. So open up that door, I've leavin' An' I won't be back no more. I'm checkin' out of the heartbreak hotel. Checkin' out of this heartbreak hotel.

The last part of I'm checking out was left off. Too bad because it was the best part of the song. Watch Post Cards from the Edge. She is excellent with singing as well as acting.
Frank, years ago I saw Postcards From the Edge based on Carrie Fischer's book of the same title. I found this video on here...they have several vids taken from the movie. I played this video probably 10 tines! Then UA-cam took it down saying it was not allowed. Copyright problems they said. All the other scenes were left up! Then it was put back up...the whole thing. Great! Then they took it down again! Now I see it's back up but they cut the fantastic ending!?! Why? If it's a copyright thing, how are all the other scenes left up?
The backstory of this is a Carrie Fisher video, which is somewhere on UA-cam. Debbie Reynolds wanted Carrie to sing because she had a great voice. But Carrie didn't want to go that way.
May I just say, I HATE MISLABELED VIDEOS!?!? I've been checking out all the videos of this song and they ALL cut off the ending of Meryl singing this song. So, when I saw the title of this video I was thinking, OK, finally the full song. But alas, it's NOT. Damn. Just damn. The full song used to be on UA-cam...I had it bookmarked and watched it many, many times!
Have you watched the movie this song came from. It’s called “Postcards from the Edge. If you watch the movie you will see that they cut away and show you the background. People like Gene Hackman and Shirley McLaine. If you listen you will hear the song continues and then they cut back to Meryl Streep as she finishes the song.

@@suebenson2391 ...yes I know, I've seen the movie several times. But in this scene in the movie she keeps on singing after the cut. She sings all thru the credits at the end of the movie. The ending in this video is NOT how it ends.
