Glad I stumbled across this channel a little while ago...excellent content and conversation! You guys keep this up and I just might have to hit up your patreon lol
Hey Troy thanks for answering the Curtis Curve question! That was my favorite goalie stick, have not seen one being used for a while also. I liked it because my style was more unorthodox and I could block more lower shot with the full stick on the ice. The notch also left room for the blocker, so your stick had full bearing on the ice.
Great points. Alex Stalock literally cut a notch out of his stick so the glove would fit in perfectly and give him more leverage. I love when new goalie innovations come out. Even if they don't take off.
Great discussion on the habs Mt. Rushmore. Just because I'm a stickler for details.... Jocelyn Thibeault never won the Hart. It was Jose Theodore, who was also amazing for a few years.
I think you guys nailed it. Big habs fan here. My top 4 was Maurice Richard, Béliveau, Lafleur and Roy before listening to the segment. You can't put Price in the same category, never won a stanley cup. Dryden not too shabby either, I hesitated between him and Roy. Maurice is a legend here in montréal, and Henri is barely ever mentioned, even tough he has the most cups won.
I like your team Mt Rushmore. If it hurts you too much to include Price on your Mt Rushmore of Canadiens goalies, you could always look at the 'forgotten' HOFer, Bill Durnan. He only had a seven year career, but it included two Stanley cups, six first-team All Star selections, and six Vezina trophies. He was also the last goalie that was allowed to be the captain of his team. George Hainsworth also had an incredible career, although it was split with the Leafs. Kind of an embarrassment of riches.
I can tell which canadian breaker uses a scanner...rarely gets case hits with products like clear cut, The Cup and now 2023-24 SPX, where the hit card is the top card., I knew for a few years that something was up, but I didn't know how...now I do....
@@TLHockeyCards I don't have proof, but I've watched his breaks every weds and Friday for a couple years, and it's obvious...If by me saying "Weds and Friday breaks" means nothing, then your not in his breaks.
@@sportsfix6975 yeah I’m pretty sure I know who your talking about then, and I hope your wrong because I’ve entered those breaks before. Scary hobby when you don’t know exactly what’s going on behind the scenes…
@@TLHockeyCards yeah, seeing as Fanatics is going to deny randomizing, repacks ( or as he calls them " buybacks" and any form of lottery ( the 1/1 shield bounty etc) pretty much all breakers right now are going to do everything they can to make a fast buck in the next 18 months...if you want an honest breaker, Wayne's Breaks is by the book
11, no mention of Kopitar ?? Before Legwand and Alfredsson IMO. And yeah, Koivu before Legwand :p for 12, Cournoyer no? Sorry for 2ng guessin', good job guys very entertaining and educationnal as always :)
Guys, Love the show!! For the Habs, how do you not have Georges Vezina on there, especially ahead of the other goalies? You're rattling off how many Vezina Trophies these other guys have - how do you not put the guy who the trophy is named after on the hypothetical Mt. Rushmore? If that doesn't qualify for Mt. Rushmore, I'm not sure what does... You guys are amazing - Thanks for the show!
Vezina could definitely be a consideration. His rookie card is one of the grails of the hobby and of course he was a pioneer of the position. In my opinion (Josh), I still wouldn't put him ahead of Roy factoring in the hobby into this exercise. Roy is by far the biggest goalie chase in the hobby. We should have mentioned Vezina as a candidate though...missed on that one :). Appreciate you adding to the convo and for your support of the show!
The first Fanatics hockey card product will likely be the 2026 USA Olympic Hockey team cards. Besides providing the jerseys, Fanatics will likely vie to produce the favored USA team cards. Let’s see if/how UD gets in front of this?
Great catch lol! That's on one of the preview images...hopefully they got it corrected before the cards were produced. Appreciate the kind words about the show!
You should have had me on for the Habs Mount Rushmore. No matter how we dice it, historically it is Vezina (1911 C55), Richard (1951 Parkhurst), Plante (1955 Parkhurst), and Lafleur (1971 OPC). Then, depending on recency bias, Roy (1986 OPC) or Dryden (1971 OPC) can be swapped in for Vezina, mindful Vezina is arguably the most famous card in the hobby, alongside Howe, Orr, and Gretzky. So, #1 is Vezina/Roy. As great as Beliveau was, the reason he and Morenz don't factor is they won't displace Richard or Lafleur. And, there will always be at least two goalies on their Mount Rushmore, as their success derives primarily from goaltending. Plus, they revolutionized the position. Plante introduced the mask and playing the puck, Dryden introduced size, Roy introduced the butterfly (as did Tony O, also a Hab), and Price introduced game-console-like technicals. Point your finger at any NHL goalie today, and they are a combination of all four goalies. The reason Price is a first ballot HOFer who will have his banner raised is he fronted some of the worst Habs teams in history, yet has the most wins and best GAA in Habs history. What does he do in front of great teams? Look at his international numbers as an adult: 16-0, 1.05 GAA, .963 SVP. Insanity. Brodeur, Roy, and Hasek never did that internationally, even in lower scoring eras. Once Price left (having played on a single knee) after bringing the Habs to the finals in 2021, the team was a draft lottery team for the next three years. He dragged the team into the playoffs year-on-year.
Guys, you missed out on Georges Vezina for the Canadians Mount Rushmore !!! He has an iconic rookie card that is close to the 1906 Honus Wagner card, he was way ahead of his time in terms a goaltending, he basically died on the ice after playing for 15 seasons and got the trophy for the best goaltender each season named after him. For me, personally - he is ahead of all the guys you named and his rookie card in high condition is the most expensive card of all Canadians players...
You're not the first to say this. He should have been a candidate, but I don't think I (Josh) would put him ahead of Roy...just because Roy is by far the biggest and most chased hobby goalie and it is the hobby Mt. Rushmore. It's definitely debatable, though, and you can certainly make a strong case for Vezina and others. So who would your four be then? Thanks for chiming in!
@@hockeycardsgongshow I dont want to dig too deep into the Mount Rushmore thing. But from a vintage card perspective, I would assume there are four cards that represent the main core of hockey history - the 1911 Vezina, the 1951 Howe, the 1966 Orr and the 1979 Gretzky. I would suggest if you want to do a Mount Rushmore for hockey and the hobby, the rookie card itself should also have a big impact on the decision. I mean, how many Jean Béliveau collectors do we know? And Maurice Richard was already 10 years in the league when his first card was produced - can we really name that a rookie card? On the other hand the Vezina is the holy grail for a lot of vintage collectors - and everyone who collects hockey seriously knows about this card. Its a true rookie card - and is already more than 110 years old - from a player whos name is on the trophy for the best goaltenders of all time. Honestly, neither Roy nor Dryden will ever come close to that. Nor will their card prices...
Fair enough it’s a 1 card (agree with you in that it’s a hobby grail for sure) versus the entirety of the Roy chase. Fun debate. Certainly see your point.
I'd pick Dryden over Plante/Roy but I started watching Hockey in 1971. Dryden was only a Canadien while I don't even think of Roy or Plante as Canadiens (I reviewed their careers after the segment and both played more time in Montreal than I remembered!) I've never heard anyone (who saw Dryden,) say they'd pick Roy over him for a playoff goalie (look up his stats.)
Such a tough call...given Roy is the biggest goalie in the entire hobby...that's what gave him the edge to us given we're trying to determine the hobby Mt. Rushmore....not just the greatest players. But back to Dryden, you can certainly make a legitimate case for him. Appreciate you sharing your thoughts!
If there was a set from UD that was built to attract American buyers and collectors from different countries who collect basketball and football primarily, it would have to be Credentials. As a hockey collector for the past 25 years, I welcome the design.
oooo I love it lol ... well, I'd like to compare your most winningest goalie with ours, Craig Anderson ... not as many playoff games as Price but equally comparable to playoff success (both made it to finals but no Cup) Price Playoff SAV .919 Anderson Playoff SAV .929 I think they both played very well and Craig Anderson didn't need to be coddled so I'll give the advantage to Craig lol
