  • Matching is a common argument made by insurance adjusters. "We don't owe for matching" is something I hear on nearly every small or medium loss.
The biggest problem lies in situations where items, like cabinets, aren't directly damaged by the cause of loss, but become damaged as part of mitigation or repairs.
    Do you agree?

Your Podcast are awesome and you nail a lot of these issues right on the head. The problem in my area is matching in Illinois and we also have a very weak(almost non - existent Department of Insurance which sends out the same letter each time when a complaint is filed her in Illinois. Attorneys will not take on any claims under say $15,000, so most people have to walk away because they can not afford to fight the claim due to a lack of funds, even if they are correct. Yes, you have state statues with nobody to implement them. In other words they are forcing people into appraisal or lawsuits because they just point blank refuse to pay items that should normally be paid.Deny, Deny Deny

Some policies actually do state in the exclusions that "we do not owe for matching." Not all, but some do.

Hi, not sure if you could recommend something for me here.. I am in British Columbia, Vancouver Island. Our house a water leaked from our bathroom and the insurance company said that they will not replace all our of flooring and will only replace the directly affected floors in the bathroom, master and the adjacent bedroom and hallway. Currently, all our hardwood are all matching in every room, including the kitchen/family room and formal dining room/living room. If they only replace what they say will pay for, my house will have two different kind of flooring that everyone will see as soon as you open the door and enter the house. It's in your line of sight. Im not trying to greedy but I just think that the insurance is trying to underpay my claim by not replacing all the flooring. I understand that it's not directly affected but it is in some ways... Not sure what to do here...

What are you talking about? Adjusters get paid on commission based on a percentage of the damages. It is in their best interest to write as high an estimate as possible. The reason that they don’t create damages is because they will be reinspected by the insurance company they represent. Adjusters use the same tools you use to determine cost of damages; Xactimate.

I hope you've read a policy and learned something since you made this video. This is terrible. Insurance companies don't owe to match. They owe for accidental direct physical loss caused by a loss insured. BTW, a lot of adjusters used to be or still are contractors. So they do know what it takes to put it back. You want the adjuster to stick to writing the claim and interpreting the policy and you should stick to what you do. Does this mean that you will do construction and stop trying to interprete the policy and insurance company processes?
