  • Breaking down the gear you might need to BIKEPACk across Iceland, it's a lot more than I thought I would need. This will be a first traverse attempt where we will ride from the furthest easter point across the interior of the island and finish at the furthest western point.
    Riders: @adammorka, @chrisburkard, @ericbatty

I love that you say 'minimal' so many times yet there is foundation and mascara mentioned! So cute!

Hey Emily! If you have time - repackage all of the dehydrated meals into quart sized freezer bags and bring or make a 'cozy.' Putting all the meals in the freezer bags save a ton of space on the bike and the cozy bag replaces the meal packaging that is normal used to cook the food once you add boiling water. When you repackage the food, just write on the bag the name of the meal and the amount of water to add. I do this backpacking a lot and it saves lots of room!

Agreed we do the same thing using freezer bags. One other point was a lot of the dried foods are for 2 person servings not one! My wifey and I were getting just too full and found this out one day, haha. We also carried extra heavy duty huge garbage bag, in case you have to float and swim with your gear.

We’re going very minimalistic so I need to take 2 jackets, 2 hats, 4 pairs of socks, neoprene socks, neoprene booties and shoes, make up, lip balm, oh and a foam roller. But to further reduce volume I’ll take the cardboard tube out of the toilet roll. 😂
But- you have great presenting skills. Very enjoyable videos.

Iceland is an amazing place to visit and is definitely at the "experienced" end of the bikepacking skill level - challenging weather (often both cold and wet, with a high windchill factor), lots of remote stretches and a few epic river crossings. For a first bikepacking trip with no kit shakedown trips beforehand to refine your kit selection, it's quite a first trip! Hopefully you can make it as far as the incredible Westfjords region which is truly stunning and highly recommended!
    Few suggestions:
Bikes spares - allow for sufficient spare brake pads, derailleur hangers, tyre boots, tubeless repairs, chain spares etc. the bikes will take an absolute beating and will almost certainly fail at some point, be ready for it.
As others have commented, lose as much packaging as you can from food prior to departure. The biggest issue with bikepacking isn't weight, it's volume. Hydrated meal packaging takes up so much of your precious limited volume.
I'd reduce your clothing kit further, there are too many items for a 10 day trip. Be really brutal with kit choice - duplicate nothing. Split your clothing into two bundles - absolute essential clothing and "nice to have" clothing. Try to eliminate the "nice to have" bundle entirely.Take items that are versatile and can do more than one job.
Sleeping - the ground will be cold. Make sure your sleeping mat has a decent "r value" to prevent heat loss..You can get away with an insulated mat and poor sleeping bag and remain warm by adding clothing to your sleep system. You cannot get away with a poorly insulated mat and a warm sleeping bag as the heat escapes beneath you and you will end up cold. Consider taking down booties or Nordisk Mos down slippers if you think you might suffer from cold feet at night as they will keep you awake. Warm feet = a good night's sleep.
Chargers - the set up with multiple smaller chargers is better. One charger can always fail. Keep them in separate dry bags so there is less chance of both failing due to water ingress at the same time.
Look forward to see how you get on, hope the bike holds up and the weather too! :)

Wow! I already told my husband I got a notification from you saying that you guys are ready to do that. We will missing you from Durham forest, and from the spring area😊. That is something amazing. From other experiences..back packing, not bike packing though, I heard that if you guys sleep in ⛺, make sure the fliers are breathable but not allowing sand to enter..some nights may be windier. What I love the most is that you did not forget the coffee..that is very important aspect for all the coffee lovers 😀. No bears, no other animals so you guys will be fine doing the trip in an amazing country. Don't fall in love with it, please come back to Durham forest 🤗

Good luck on the trip, i'll be watching the IG account to see updates! I'm no bikepacking expert but from the 3 trips i did, I'd say try to keep the clothes you will wear the next day with you when you sleep so they don't get super cold and catch ambient humidity (if any) overnight. My brother saved a ton of space by unpacking some of the stuff and putting it into vaccuum sealed bags before the trip (for the stuff he knew we'd be using on the last few days for example). And just be super careful in the downhills as all the extra weight will burn through your brake pads REALLY fast !

If your running dyno hubs, you'll want at least one "pass-thur" battery pack per bike. they are the only ones that let you use the USB out while the hub is charging the pack. Really handy when your GPS is low but you don't yet need the lights.
PS if you are gonna be around power outlets every day or two, dynos aren't worth the hassle.

COFFEE. Bring more coffee. We did a 16 day whitewater kayak trip on the Grand Canyon and ran out of coffee on day FIVE! Things got more than a little ugly until we traded some of our 84+ cases of beer for coffee with some local hikers.
