    Love, love, loved this video, Susan! What a treat to meet your beautiful mother who is just as charming as you are. The fact that she can use her hands (pain-free!) to stitch and knit is amazing and aspirational. Her cross-stitched firecracker tree piece is so impressive - no chart for that border! How sweet that she revealed she was secretly knitting baby sweaters for future gifting.
    The scissor information was fascinating. I had no idea about the different kinds of forging and then stamping of metal. I appreciate all of my scissors and will think of the “walking and talking” analogy as I use them. I have fond childhood memories of going to the fabric store with my Mom and watching and listening to the store clerk run the fabric through the measuring device and then cutting the yardage with huge shears.
    I look forward to this year’s adventure with your 1870s girls. Thank you so much for sharing your creative endeavors and inspiration with all of us. ❤❤❤ A-M

      Thank you so much for watching. I have the same memories of hearing the fabric in the fabric store, running through the measuring device and then being chopped before the final cut. Isn’t it funny how things like that stick with us thank you for your lovely comment and I’m so happy that you joined me today, I love all my scissors, but I truly have an appreciation for those that were hand forged

I love that she is designing her own sampler. Her daughter didn’t fall far from the tree. Your flosstubes are a delight. The craftsmanship on those scissors are amazing. What a wonderful idea to interview your mother and share with us! I was quite surprised that one of your young ladies from 1870 is named Pharaby (or maybe Faraby). This is the first time I have heard that name outside of my genealogical research into my ancestry. I really enjoy that you teach not just our craft but the history behind it. After scrolling back in time on your channel, I found video #30 on color and Susan Greene’s “Wearable Prints” particularly informative. As I am attempting to replicate a sampler stitched in 1790 by my 2nd cousin 6 times removed that is housed at the Charleston Museum, knowing how colors fade may be especially helpful as I try to determine what the original colors might have been. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, research, and passion!

    • @susanstandleystitchintime
      @susanstandleystitchintime  10 місяців тому +1

      I’ve enjoyed reading your comment. Thank you for letting me know that you find the content. Interesting and helpful. Pharaby is such an interesting name. I have only heard it used a few times so I’m very curious about the person in your ancestry. I’m so delighted to hear that you are seriously considering dies from the time period of your Sampler as you chart. I think it’s wonderful for people to adapt patterns and make them their own but I believe we benefit from knowing the original colors to the best of our ability. Thank you so much for watching and look forward to chatting with you again.

    • @arhuntakamadebymizmouse5903
      @arhuntakamadebymizmouse5903 10 місяців тому

      After our chat, I dug back into my family tree research. My “Phariby” was my 4th great-grandmother on my daddy’s maternal side and was older than your young lady as she was born June 3, 1814 and died Dec. 17, 1894 in Washington County, Georgia. Her name was spelled a variety of ways, which I attribute to census takers taking a guess at it. Her son’s death certificate in 1924 even reads Ferrybelle, but I attribute that to a possible nickname and failing memory since that was 30 years after her passing. The 1850 census has Phariby, and her headstone reads Pharbie. I find her gravestone both touching and intriguing as it has a dove at the top and an inscription which reads, “Mother hath done what she could.” Since you said that Contessa was destined to become a lady, but you alluded to a different path for Phariby which sounded foreboding, maybe this inscription symbolically ties your Phariby and mine together. That is even more reason to look forward to meeting your Phariby and her half-sister Contessa and discovering their stories.(@susanstandleystitchintime)

    Hi Susan, I thought I added a comment yesterday but it seems to have disappeared. Apologies if this comes twice.
    I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed catching up with all you are doing and your plans ahead. ❤
    I too am stitching 'The needlework panel of a fruit tree and two animals' - I agree the colours are beautiful and it seems to just keep on enticing you to stitch a little more. The fruit adds some really special mixed red pink and ivory tones, my guess initially was I thought they were figs but now my thought is they are pomegranates, the colours and patterns really almost replicate the arils and their surrounding membranes. I also saw one website saying in its fun facts, King Henry VIII was the first to plant one in England. So I guess even though the pomegranate didn't originate from there, they were still there and provided not only a health benefit but also symbolism in art and history and religion. There was another horrible ancient fruit tree but as it had such vile properties I am really hoping it wasn't that one 😅- the Medlar Tree.
    It was also lovely to listen to your interview with your Mum - something so special to share with us all. The scissors and your permission to us all to have them all made me smile. I inherited all of my Mums scissors, some lovely small ones not so many antique ones but quite a few varieties - its just wonderful to use them knowing she had made many creative things with them as well.
    Will look forward to your next flosstube and can't wait to see what fruit you think is portrayed in the piece we are working on. I will post an update to my instagram soon @suzilou02. Louise x

      Dear Louise
      Thank you so much for your lovely comment. I enjoyed reading it so very much. I was thrilled to hear that you are Stitching the same project and have had to the same reaction to the colors! I really don’t want to stitch anything else at this moment. I so appreciated your input and discussion about the fruit. I am still considering what it might be, and I’m really enjoying hearing from everybody. I had to look up the terrible tree you were referring to as I had not heard of it before. I am happy to hear you enjoyed meeting my mom. And it warmed my heart to know that you have saved scissors from your mom. Lovely to meet you and I look forward to watching your progress on Fruit Tree with Two Animals!

    Hi Susan, I do wonder if the fruit tree stitched in the Scarlet Letter sampler is a crab apple which is native to the UK where I live. I have grown older varieties of apple trees but also enjoy a splendid crab apple tree at the bottom of my current garden and the colours of that fruit are very like those in the sampler. The crab apple has a smaller fruit than an apple but with a longer stalk and is much loved by the wildlife. I am very intrigued to hear what you think. Love the sampler and your floss tube of course! Thank you for all the inspiration and knowledge.
