Brilliant result reviving this fine old rifle - thank you, Doctor.
Good morning Mark, Yes we revived her! "For the sake of history..... and at your behest,......We applied the paddles to her chest".
Great Video as always Doc!Thank you for taking the time and bringing us along for the ride. The was real accurate, and I bet fun sto shoot! We have a few more days left of deer hunting season here. Seen lot's of them, but all small. Take Care!!
Hi Dave, Glad you caught the show. She was fun to shoot, ...conversions are always interesting, but some ideas didn't translate well. Good luck on your hunt ! I have seen signs lately on my hikes in the woods, like scrapes and small trees beat to crap. Lots of Coyotes out here, ...always keeping them moving. Best regards...Doc
Doc! Allways a pleassure to watch you work. And I allways admire your editing skills. I really like cartridge conversion guns. Loved your trained turkey! Thanks for sharing.
God morgen John, Glad du fikk med deg showet, det var gøy. The cases shot fine with no leaking. If you enjoyed the dancing turkey, ...that's nothing, ...you should hear her play the piano ! Regards...Doc
That's a nice looking old conversion and the bullets look like they have some wallop thank you sir
Thank you Sir for watching and commenting. She shot will and will sure split some firewood. Regards....Doc
Thanks, Doctor!! I've never seen one of these in action before. Terrific simple engineering with a sturdy lock construction.
Hi Richard, It is a good design in my opinion, like you say , simple and effective. No gas leaks and well behaved. ....Doc
Another great video Doc. I mentioned your channel to a guy at my range yesterday who was shooting a Ballard with a rosewood stock. He was using .357 mag brass, 20 grains of 2F, under a bullet cast from a custom made mold @ 50 yds.
Pleasant Sunday morning to you Robert. The Ballard sounds fine, Rosewood is a very beautiful wood. 20 grains in a .38 sounds just about perfect. Wish I was out there too. Regards ....Doc
Very nice. The action reminds me of a Peabody except the lever is on the top with the Roberts. I always enjoy your videos.
Good morning "Just", Yes Sir, and made in the Peabody factory in RI. Best regards....Doc
Felicitaciones Dr. Realmente excepcional su vídeo !
Muchas gracias por el amable comentario. Me alegra que hayas disfrutado de la presentación. Saludos desde Estados Unidos.
I live for videos like this DR. Interesting firearms and the making ammo for them. Keep up the great work.
Hello Snapper, Glad you enjoyed it. It was rewarding for me and the gun shot well. Regards...Doc
@dr.durellshepard398 keep up the great work Dr.
Most beautiful wow thanks for showing it out in your garden 🎉🎉❤❤
Thanks so much for your positive comment, the garden portion was filmed in the spring.....Doc
Well done Doc. As you know, one of my favorite cartridges. I'm always amazed at the wide variety of musket conversion ideas that inventors came up with. Thanks for sharing 😊
Hi Steve, Hope you're getting in some pleasant fall shooting. Yes, we are the last two hold-outs shooting this cartridge! A Peabody want-to-be.
Thanks Doc, loved Watching!
Hi Jeff, my pleasure to have you along on the safari. ...Doc
Excellent looking rifle and ammunition, very nice video 👍
Thank you Sir for the kind comment, I'm pleased that you enjoyed the adventure......Doc
I have not seen this cartridge conversion before. That lever on the wrist looks like it would give the web of your hand a pretty good thump. I love the firearms of this transitional period, the good, the bad and the ugly. A friend sent me cell phone pics of his latest trade. It's a second model Allen Springfield trapdoor sporterized to resemble a plains rifle by J. Hayden of Ohio. Can't wait to get my hands on it. Thanks Doc, enjoyed the post. Gp
Good morning GP, I must say that the lever tail is very close to your hand but was not an issue, it never contacted my hand on recoil. All in all it preformed very well. I did have a problem trying to use shotgun brass as the thin rims would jump the extractor, so I went with the Snyder cases. The J. Hayden ( in .50-70 ? ) sounds interesting, hope to see a video on that one. Best regards.....Doc
@@dr.durellshepard398 Good Morning Doc. I got a look at the J. Hayden. It is not an Allin conversion, but an 1868 with the long serial numbered receiver dated 1870. She has a 30 inch octagon barrel with a Hawken style stock and furniture. It's got double set triggers, silver nose cap and a single barrel key. A 50-70 cartridge fits right in. The only warts I see right off the bat are that the lock doesn't hold on full cock and there is a little play in the breech block. To be continued Gp
@@oldscoutgp Hi GP, The gun sounds great, just needs a little attention. I think the 1868 guns, though purpose built, still used the Civil war locks, and there should be plenty of those parts around. May need a new tumbler or sear or sear spring ?? Or a whole new lock, my model1868 gun has a lock stamped 1864. S & S has Part Number: 58S169
1861, 1863 - 1864 SPRINGFIELD TUMBLER, Complete, Original. $80.- Best of luck....Gun Doc
@@dr.durellshepard398 When my buddy told me he was going to put some chemical rust remover on the metal and was working on cleaning up the bore,.I felt it was my duty to make the 5 hr round trip to save it. That thing screams old west buffalo hunter. It was well used, but not abused. I haven''t had time to mess with it much but I got the lock (dated 1863) to work properly outside the gun, but doesn't hold full cock installed. Must be some wood interfering or a deal with the double set triggers. The play in the action my be a worn hinge pin. Glad to hear S&S has parts. Anyway, an interesting project. Gp
@@oldscoutgp Oops, Sorry for jumping to conclusions. I forgot about the set triggers, which was the problem with a gun I purchased. Someone assembled the set trigger incorrectly and it acted that way.
Hello Again Doc Sweet Rifle Conversion 😀😊😀
Hi Chris, Yes, one of the better ideas in modernizing the old muzzle stuffers. ....Doc
Outstanding!
Thanks so much....Doc
You worked long and hard to make the ammunition for this one! Another very interesting design, it must have been an extremely busy time for inventors trying to make the best use of the thousands of muzzle loading rifles both in USA and here in UK, they came up with so many different solutions to the same problem. Many thanks for your efforts to make this one speak again! The Turkeys are getting bigger, must be all those yellow letters, and Daffodils in November? Chris B.
Hi Chris, I found the ammo build both challenging and rewarding. I love to see the old civil war gun parts on the guns being built years after the war. The 1868 US Trapdoor is a perfect example with their old lock-plates. Regards...Doc
((Yes, I agree with you about the lever. I was concerned about it hitting my hand on recoil, but it was not a problem. Thank you for your comment. Doctor from USA))
@@dr.durellshepard398 спасибо за Ваши качественные познавательные ролики 🧐👍

Thank you doctor. The bayonet blade and the handle look like our “Baïonnette Chassepot”, but not the hilt. Is any relation between this one and ours ?
Hello Eric, The gun I shot in the video is a Springfield US modified gun that takes the socket bayonet as shown near the start of the video. I believe that the modified Enfield guns were fitted with the sword type bayonet (as shown near the end of the video) which is similar in profile to your Chassepot style, differences being the blade cross section is not the "T" style and lack of the curved quillon cross guard. Best regards....Doc
Oh, I didn’t pay attention to the bayonet at the beginning. Thanks and best regards.
Hi great video. I am looking at a rimfire version although a little weary about cracking the stock. Yours looks fine, do you have any recommendations to avoid putting pressure on the stock ?
Hello Sir and thanks for your comment. Unfortunately, I too have a crack ahead of the trigger guard, not noticeable in the video. So, I didn't use full loads and have not fired this gun very often. Be sure the square end of the receiver is taking the recoil and not the tang. Best of luck ....Doc
@@dr.durellshepard398 Thanks for the advice !
