_Africa_ doesn't come from _Ifriqiya,_ it's the other way around. The term comes from the Roman Empire after they defeated Hannibal and conquered the Carthaginian Empire in 146 BCE, which spanned Southeast Iberia, Southwest Italy and coastal North Africa (excluding Egypt). They renamed Tunisia and coastal Libya their _Africa_ province (later Africa prefecture and Africa exarchate). In the 7th century, when the Arab-led Muslims defeated the Byzantines (Eastern Roman Empire), they simply kept the name.
The name "Africa" that the Romans gave Tunisia and coastal Libya is derived from _Afri_ who were an ethnic Amazigh (Berber) tribe in Libya. The city of _Carthage_ in northern Tunisia was founded and ruled by Phoenicians who were ethnic Semites originating in Phoenicia (Lebanon and part of southern Syria). During Antiquity, the Phoenicians and Greeks were the leading maritime peoples of the Mediterranean, so they each formed various colonies on Southern Europe and North Africa. Phoenicia proper fell to the Neo-Assyrian Empire in 738 BCE.
So, before Western European colonization began, _Africa_ meant coastal North Africa excluding Egypt (i.e. _Maghreb_ is the later equivalent). _Asia_ meant West Asia and Afghanistan, which is why Asia Minor is Anatolia (Turkey) and Asia Major is the regions to its east. During the Age of Colonialism the terms were eventually expanded to the whole continent and even neighboring islands. Today, many people use the labels in a way that exclude the very regions they originally referred to. _Europe_ didn't originally mean all of modern Europe either. Amazigh people are native to the Maghreb.

I definitely appreciate the quote on quote African Islamic perspective as it is not something we get to hear much of. But it is clear this man is Arabized he has an allegiance to some sort of Arab Islamic power. He seems to undermine the damage those Arab Muslim Leaders participated in the colonization of Africa.

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “This matter will certainly reach every place touched by the night and day. Allah will not leave a house or residence but that Allah will cause this religion to enter it, by which the honorable will be honored, and the disgraceful will be disgraced. Allah will honor the honorable with Islam, and he will disgrace the disgraceful with unbelief.”

0:44-0:51 I thought Alkebulan was a Arab word. It’s definitely not the Original Name of the Continent. The Continent was never named by one name.

I feel you, but i think a real discussion is more productive than a debate. Too often I see “debates” and it’s just 2 people running their mouths yelling at each other trying to win.

Many people Berber/Amaghazi people have done 23 and me showing little to no Arab admixture. Because Islam and some Arabic custom or words are found in their culture people assume Arab blood.

I believe it was Pharoh Akenaten who unified his Egyptian dynasty by monotheism because he realized his people were not unified since too many were scattered with different dieties.AMEN....Thankfully the OAU has a goal of creating one African passport thereby easing transportation & trade.

@Referral in Earth history, every continent including land and sea changes its name by conquer and quest by high civilization/colonizer over low civilization/colonies not only continents but also exoplanet of solar system and relevant to see the difference between self referral like human or inhabitant/indigenous/local and object referral meaning resource like land/sea etc

See, this why you can't take advice on history from certain people. Because they very bias. Like for instance. Ask a guy who's supposed to be pro black and he married outside of his race. Lol. He really not going to agree on being very honest. Because he going to think about who he's married with or friends with. When he started saying. Theses people who came here from other places or more African than him. I said to myself who he's in a relationship with or who's his best friend is. I thought he wouldn't go there and I would just be curious and he said. I got a friend. Lol. He's capeing.

Sounds like a nick name, thank goodness we didn't refer to our selves as africans and african people before a serten point in history, European views and history nearly ruined everything, thanks to those that have kept preserved and mantained our culture and history before arrival of European spoilers/explorers

It's disappointing to hear some of these plainly inaccurate talking points. For starters, the term "Africa" did not come from the Arab invaders! It redates their incursions into Africa by many centuries. (And by the way, it doesnt come from the Romans either.) Panafricanism is our heritage. Just a brief look at our oral histories will show repeated references to our common heritage. Our current groups (Yoruba, Bakongo, Akan, etc.) are *extremely* recent in our long history. Our histories speak of shared origins in the Nile valley area. This is well established by various fields of research, such as by the great Cheikh Anta Diop, Theophile Obenga and many others.
