  • Here's some fabulous unidentified color footage of a festive sail away aboard the SS Lurline, leaving San Francisco for Hawaii in what looks like the early 1960s. Here's a question for you viewers... how did the photographer manage to film the ship leaving the dock... and then get aboard?! Have fun!

I was eleven years old when I sailed with my parents on the S/S Lurline in late August, 1964. I remember passengers were in a very good mood - after all, we were headed to Hawaii! After a raucous sendoff with everyone on deck waving goodbye, most of the adults seemed to head to the bar for a cocktail before dinner - and to get out of the cold air. The roughest sea came right then, otherwise the trip was quite pleasant - the Lurline had a wide beam and rolled very little. I loved the ship!

This Lurline became Chandris Line's Ellinis in 1963. Her near twin sister, the original Monterey (later renamed Matsonia in 1957) was re-named Lurline in 1963 and sailed for Matson Line until 1970 when she was also sold to Chandris Lines. That ship was renamed Britanis and had an additonal 35+ years of successful service with Chandris Lines.

Strange thing, the mind: I know the Lurline(s) had a green hull below the waterline, but watching the film, my mind keeps trying to tell me it's red...
This is a great video and the choice of music does it justice. Where is everyone else? Hung over? Seasick? They have the boat all to themselves!

@whorose Your dad must have known Bob van der Stok, the shipsdoctor on the SS Lurline. Van der Stok was a Dutch famous Spitfire Pilot in WW II and escaped from the POW camp Stalag Luft III (the great Escape) in 1944.

What a great video. Did this become the Britannis? (Chandris) later in life?

Harbor Master's boat. The photographer could have caught a ride on the Harbor Master's boat which would have sailed out to the Lurline to pick up the Harbor Master. What is the Harbor Master? He is the fellow used to guide any ship out from and into any harbor such as SF. While I was serving in the Navy we took on a Harbor Master pulling into or leaving any foreign port (I was stationed in Japan a the time).

I'm guessing that the ship left San Francisco and headed south to Los Angeles to pick up more passengers or to refuel, and the photographer drove down and boarded there. I'm pretty sure the SS President Wilson of APL did that when en route to Hawaii and Asia.

Probably. The Britanis, formerly S.S. Monterey; formerly S.S. Matsonia, became the S.S. Lurline in 1963. This is the ship I sailed on in 1964. She sank - as the Belofin-I, in 2000.

I'm wondering if maybe the footage is from more than just one cruise, to give the illusion that there were two different video-photographers.

@GuyverFan95 It's possible... but I'm pretty sure there was no splice in the film!
