Old Rusty Masonry Forged Hammer Restoration

  • Hello folks! Today I want to show you my new restoration project. I found this old rusty masons hammer at flea marker and bought for USD $1. The hammer doesn't have any stamps or signs but it's forged not factory made and I really like it!. I never had before this hammer and for me it was very interesting project. I'm used electrolysis to remove all rust from the hammer head. Also tempered it. Welding was used to fill large holes and close cracks. Then, after anglegrinder machine, I used putty for the metal and then painting. Further, made the handle out of walnut wood and used a mounted mounting without wedges. I burned the handle with a torch and soaked it in oil. I hope you enjoy my new restoration video.
    Sincerely, Alex. Thanks for attention!
Good luck and health to everyone! With best wishes, Alex!

I was hesitant with the welding, but you lost me on the metal putty.

You did a nice job making it look good. With all of the pitting there was no way to grind it all out without massive metal loss. Alternatively, you could have possibly reformed it if you had the ability to bring it up to welding temperature in the forge but that is well beyond restoring. So I say great job. I would be proud to use that tool.

Ok. I admit I was a bit skeptical about anything cool coming out of that hammer. But, once again, fantastic result!

I’ve probably been wrong for a half century or so, but with broken wood handles and such, I just cut off the length and throw the head in the coals of the wood stove a few hours. When removed, the wood is gone, as well as old paint and much of the rust, and the steel is apparently ‘normalized’. I then sand and polish, and shape the new handle, and redevelop the edges on the head as needed. I heat the edges and quench, then final sharpen. Lazy, I guess. Like this gentleman’s work, especially the use of hair dye for wood finish. Nice colours.

Excuse my ignorance of the process but is a plastic pottle safe for doing the rust removal with electricity? I was under the impression the fluid got really hot. I'm not a chemist or anything though

Good evening, everything is fine. Yes, you're right. During the process, the water heats up, but nothing critical. I've been using this process for a long time, now it's just a rust removal fluid. Thank you for attention.

It was not necessary to smooth the sides too much, only the working edges. Should not be painted. It would be better to keep the texture. IMHO.
