    The faster production was due to Lord Beaverbrook, a Canadian Newspaper Magnate, who Churchill had appointed as “Minister for Aircraft Production.”
    His innovative ideas included, only concentrating on five types of aircraft and spreading production to multiple sub factories, to make it much harder for the Luftwaffe to delay or stop aircraft production.
    The RAF actually ended up with more fighters at the end of the Battle of Britain than they started with, despite losses during the Battle. This was absolutely down to Lord Beaverbrook and his policies.

    Only because Rolls Royce had spent years and money pre war developing light weight alloys for engine blocks and cylinder heads was the Merlin's power to weight ratio superior, which made the spitfire and many other planes of the RAF and the USAF so effective in battle.

    • @donyoung1384
      @donyoung1384 6 місяців тому

      Prior to the contra-rotating propellers, the Mk14 had similar problems and assets caused by the huge five bladed prop (which incidentally rotated in the opposite direction to the Merlin.) as the much earlier Sopwyth Camel. The torque from the prop was terrifying. In battle it could turn one way on a farthing, but taking off, it was bloody hard work going straight. But it was bloody fast and was very well armed.
      The contra-rotating propellers cured the torque problem at take off, (and the tight turning asset,) in later Spitfire models.

    The design ideas and differences between the Spitfire, Hurricane and Bf109 Emil model are interesting and really reveals why the Spitfire was so good.
    The Spitfire is almost like a racing plane pushed into the role of a fighter. The elegant lines of the elliptical wing and rounded fuselage offer brilliant aerodynamics, high lift and low drag, but at the cost of being difficult to manufacture. Mitchell and Supermarine built several racing seaplanes for the Schneider cup in the early 30s. The Spitfire is slightly aerodynamically unstable, making it responsive to inputs and agile, but this also means it doesn't like flying in a straight line. In a dogfight, that's not a problem, but it's not a stable firing platform for shooting at bombers.
    This is where the Hurricane comes in. Sydney Camm of Hawker designed the Hurricane as an evolution of his previous design, the Fury. The Hurricane is more stable though, meaning it is a better platform for bomber hunting at the expense of responsiveness. The airframe was easier to manufacture as it wasn't this new technique of a stressed metal skin used on the Spitfire. Result was it was cheaper and quicker to build than a Spitfire.
    Then there's the Bf109E. The 109 was a good plane, but not designed for the bomber escort role it was pushed into. It's advantage over the Spitfire of being slightly faster and a better energy fighter were unused due to the orders to stay with the bombers in the formation.
    The Spitfires could attack with an altitude and speed advantage, keep the 109s busy while the Hurricanes killed the bombers. It worked extremely well.

    Sweetie, that's a Mark IXe variant. It did not fought in the Battle of Britain (those were Mark Ia and IIa types, and some Mark Ib and IIb models), and Reginald Joseph Mitchell only designed the prototype. Joseph Smith took over the project after Mitchell sadly passed away. Mark IX flew first in the first half of 1942, Mitchell passed away in 1937. He couldn't even seen the Spitfire with variable pitch propeller.

    • @iainmacleod4007
      @iainmacleod4007 Рік тому +1

      That had more to do with the shape of the wings. In fact the ME109 was fuel injected and did not have a tendency to suffer an engine cut out when carrying out tight turns or rolls in the air. Power wise the two aircraft were closely matched.

      Actually, Luftwaffe also had high-octane fuel, named C3 (96 octanes). During Battle of Britain a lot of "109"s were converted by replacing their engines from DB 601Aa type to DB 601N, the last ones were able to burn that high-octane fuel.

      Get your facts correct.... Spitfires were pure fighters, designed originally for one task. PRU Spitfires had a longer range and few PRU missions into Germany from UK bases. Post invasion and the establishment of RAF bases in France, Spitfires took on thousands of missions into axis occupied territory, including deep into Germany. Bomber command flew night missions and there was no need for any fighter escort as it would have been totally useless. The USAF decided to fly day missions and required fighter escort. That was originally provided by P47's and then later P51's that were equipped with a larger fuel load capability, and external drop tanks and had a near laminar flow wing design. Fun fact the P51 only became a decent fighter after they were equipped with the same Merlin engines (built under license by Packard) that the Spitfire had at the time.....

      The earlier types were outclimbed and outdivedby the 109 'E'. Due to it having a fuel injected engine, whilst the Spit's Merlin engine at the time was a float carburettor type that couldn't do extreme climbs or dives without almost cutting out. The problem was remedied by a woman (whose name I forget). It basically ensured that the Merlins could be put to better and effective use in the future.

    • @advorak8529
      @advorak8529 Рік тому +1

      @@commandingjudgedredd1841 ameliorated, not remedied - by Miss Shilling’s orifice, a flow restrictor, allowing short moments of negative G not flooding the carburettor completely.
      The real solution was the Bendix (a US corporation) pressure carburettor - a system where gravity was not used to function and had no effect, injecting fuel into the airstream.
      The fuel injection engine still had many advantages - they could open both valves of a cylinder for a long period, removing all exhaust and removing heat via the air flow, allowing them to be more fuel efficient, where the carburettor could only provide an air-fuel mixture, so a cross draft would cause fuel to self-ignite in the exhaust. Cooling needed more fuel (evaporation cooling) under high engine loads.

They were first and foremost designed as ground support aircraft for blitzkrieg. The germans had no pure fighters. Their arrogance led them to believe they wouldnt need to make one. Why are you showing a beautiful british spitfire with USA markings? The 'Americans' would NEVER do that. Be more proud!

    Isn’t that an American roundel? Or am I off my rocker?

    Sorry, but you talk about kills but don't explain over what period. Not the whole war.

      “The iconic aircraft of the Battle of Britain” is how this video starts, so I presume she’s given us the stats from that particular day. Or 13 hours or whatever it was.

      @@adam_p99 She could clarify that.

      It's only the battle of Britain as if you Google how many planes the Spitfire shot down it says exactly what she said so it looks like she's just reading what Google wrote word for word. The Spitfire shot down thousands of planes.

    Loss to kill ratio nowhere near close to an F-15.

      But this video is about the Spitfire, so your comment was misplaced and irrelevant.

    Have you tried writing your own scripts and not reading the Google answer word for word.
