  • This is what the drivers at the Indy 500 will see: A first-person, (almost) full-speed lap around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This two-seater ride along was driven by Mario Andretti. The car supposedly gets up to 180 mph, but we're pretty sure Mario was pushing it a bit faster than that.

Been there, done that. From this vantage point, it would seem that there is quite a bit of jostling from roughness on the track. Nothing could be further from the truth. At least in the two seater. It was very smooth and I couldn't hardly even feel passing over the "yard of bricks". I highly recommend the experience to any fan.

53.66 second lap around a 2.5 mile oval = 167.722. Fast enough to take the pole for the 1967 Indy 500 (Mario Andretti's first pole), and fast enough to make the 1970 Indianapolis 500 starting field.

And he was slowing at the end. Very cool but not worth the $300 price tag for two laps.

I saw that Mario needed a bit more speed in order to reach the 200mph mark.

Yeah, I had him ~52.20 from turn 3 to turn 3, so well under 180 even with the front stretch deceleration. Still, even a dead-pedal ride along with Mario Andretti is better than anything I did today.

Probably, but I’d say that most people probably don’t know the track is called Indianapolis Motor Speedway

I have to say that if anybody wants to do this I HIGHLY RECOMMEND it and I can't wait until next year to do it all again.

@@robsash8991 My son was there as well and took the four lap ride. He loved every minute of it. I forgot to ask him what he paid. Thank you.

Hi all I'm Jay 41 year old guy from Bray Wicklow Ireland, been to the States a few times now. I remember in 2007 I was on a road trip and stopped by either the Kannas or the Texas Motor SpeedWay sorry I cant rembember which?? They were running passenger rides on the oval in a stock car I'm thinking it was Richard Petty school the guy with the cowboy hat so so sorry if I'm wrong. Back to the story I asked one of the guys looking after the rides's "What speed is he doing"? Guy replied about 160mph and my reply was "Cool looks great but I wont try it today" My Girlfried at the time said I thought you would love to do something like that????? I said to her "Shel I have a motorbike that I have done 183mph why would I pay money to do 160mph". I love American motorsport but if you guys are going to so passenger rides lets get closer to the limit of the car rather than cashing in on 3 lap runs.
Just my expierence take care all Jay

Just to add some context, Jay. What these companies are offering is the "experience" for the average fan, not a full immersion into the speeds and skills required to compete successfully at the higher levels of motorsport (which would simply not be interesting to the casual fan). Hard to know the limits of the machine, so the assumed liability in case of an accident would put the company out of business and bankrupt the driver (or driver's family) once the lawyers were done. Don't know if the law works that way where you're from but that's the story in the US. I was a pilot myself and I would never fly a passenger to any limit I might press on my own. And though I never flew any civilians in high-performance jets, I know the ones I know that did have said they would never exceed the most moderate limits of envelope for their machines, which is still enough to make most people throw up.

for the same price as this ride you can ride in a world war two war bird (b17, B24 etc) for a 45 minute flight... I would far rather do that than speed the money for 2 laps here - and not even get over 200mph

Yankee air museum B17 ride, 25 minutes, $395 dollars for members (I am one). Indy Racing Experience, 4 laps at IMS oval $375 for IMS museum members (I am one). Done both, preferred the Indy car ride.
