Great video. When I start with quail, they will also not live in small wire cages. They will not breed under those conditions. Thank you for providing a more natural habitat for them. Looking forward to see and learn more from your quail videos. Be blessed.
Why won't they breed in cages? It looks to me like people raise them that way very frequently. If anything, large groups in an aviary such as this is the less common method.
I wouldn’t recommend using cotton as it will get entangled in the birds feet and will cause issues. You can put a small electric heater in a thermostat in the same room as the bird if it gets too cool.
Hello. I am interested in raising button quail, and I want them to be outdoors. What dimensions do you have for your aviary, or what size do you recommend?
For birds the rule is the bigger the better. My aviary cage is 12 feet long by 10 feet wide. the quail seem to really like it. There are people who raise button quail in large fish tanks and things like that. My suggestion would be the bigger you can make it the better your birds will be.
Buttons are pretty sensitive to the cold. When temps dip below 40 degrees they don't do as well. Their toes a very prone to frost bite as well. If you give them a heat source close to the ground and out of the cold elements they would do fine.
@@birdnerd I had to change my male quail for another male coz he damaged 1 of my 4 hens very much, she didnt even dare to eat and had become very thin. With the new male all is o.k., besides the couple of first days, then the new male was afraid. But not anymore, peace has returned.
King quail are fairly Monogamous so you may have low fertility. My current male won't mate with my second hen (I had set over a dozen eggs, Not a SINGLE one was fertile) so I now got some extra males lol. Trios can work but it all depends on the male. In most cases though your best bet is single pairs. Males won't usually pester, Mine actually assist the hens.
Have you ever seen a button/coturnix quail mix? I have a coturnix quail that has that under the chin white spot and he is so small. My hen is 366 grams and he is only 180 grams so I am thinking he is a mix of the 2, What do you think? Have you ever heard of them breeding or is that not possible?
hello I have 2 couples of new button quail this is my first experience with this birds I do not know how old are they, my concern here is at what time the female starts to lay egg and why the female take off the feathers to the male? can you please help me
Fernando, congrats on getting some button quail. These birds are really a pleasure to have. To answer your questions, the females will start laying eggs around 6-8 weeks of age and will lay eggs for the rest of their life. If it is cold or less than 8 hours of sunlight per day the quails will not lay eggs very often. If you just got your quails I would give them 1-2 weeks in their new environment before they start to lay eggs. to answer your second question, it's usually the females that will have a bald head due to the males mounting her daily. It doesn't harm the birds but if you have too more males than females together they will tend to harass them and can cause harm. It's important to have 2-3 females to every one male.
It also helps to have a good layer of straw in the nest. I use old plastic coffe containers (The big red ones) As a nest stuffed with straw and also some pine shavings in the bottom.
You call these Button Quail....they are in fact King Quail .... and they are native to SE Asia and Oceania. They are "true quail" and are only very distantly related to the actual Button Quail species. It seems they(King Quail) have mistakenly become named Button Quail in avicultural circles. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_quail en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buttonquail .Cheers.
Gravel is torture on the feet for birds. Quail's natural habitat is grassland. You can literally see your quail hopping in pain from foot injuries in this video. Please consider dirt, woodchips, or best of all, natural grass.
Most quail species the males are naturally aggressive with the females that’s why a 3:1 ratio works better or else the male will continue to pick on the 1 female that he is caged with. In the wild the males will mate with the female and then will move on to find another female to breed with. When the male is caged with one female even though they have bred and she is laying eggs the male will continue to try and breed her and won’t leave her alone ultimately becoming aggressive and injuring her. If you have other females in the cage with him then he can move on to the next female and breed her while the other hens are brooding their eggs.
birdnerd „Naturally aggressive“ isnt a thing! In nature they all live 1:1. just Because your Quail are Social bastards doesnt mean you should justify this! It is YOUR Job to select good roosters.

My first time incubating ButtonQuail. Only one didn’t hatch. Love them. Hatched July22
Really nice enclosures! If I were to build something similar, Im interested to know how do you clean them out and how often?
Every Saturday Is my cleaning day and I will wipe down walls trays and cages to keep clean.
Nice video, i would like to know if you can put cotton in nest for warmth as my house is a little cool

Do you raise them to sell them or sell the eggs, just curious..
How do you keep them warm in the winter?
What do you do with the chicks once they hatch? Do you leave them in the aviary?
I will let the mother raise them. Then when the chicks are older I’ll keep them with everyone or will sell them to other breeders.
Good video
Thank you
Nice big home for them :-) Most I see are in fish tanks. Pretty but, seems cramped.

Can Button Quail live outside year round in va?

Hey, I have 7 females and 1 male
If I bought another male would the two fight??
Thanks
yes they will fight
Yes the will fight. Button quail become agressive to other button quail when a new bird is added to an already established flock

Mickey Mic breeding for good mannered quails is easy because of how prolific they are.

I haven't ever heard of a mix between the two quails. but I wouldn't say its not possible since they are fairly similar in species.
How many button quail can you put in a 3 foot by 2 foot cage
No more than a trio. Button quail are very messy and stinky and in a small space they will pluck each others feathers and will become obese.

They're actually called King, Chinese painted Or Asian blue quail. Button quail are a different species. Also love the video :)

Heh. I live in Ireland. Can they live outside all year round ?
They can’t tolerate very cold temps so you would need to provide warmth and shelter for them during the cold months
birdnerd I’m from Ireland. But could they stay out all year round if the have 24/7 access to a run and coop
How do you keep them from breaking the eggs?
They are pretty good to not break the eggs. Every once in a while ill see a broken egg but not very often.
It also helps to have a good layer of straw in the nest. I use old plastic coffe containers (The big red ones) As a nest stuffed with straw and also some pine shavings in the bottom.
I like to buy some eggs were can i buy them from thanks

I see 5 button quail
There are 4 in the cage that i'm standing in 3 females and 1 male, in the flight next to me there are 4 males in there.
What’s the tiny white bird in the shed entry? That bird makes 5 by my count as well.
I have 8 and they are bossy😂

2:11 no they should always be 1:1! If he’s aggressive you shouldn’t breed with him anyway!!
