Of George Q. Cannon’s recollection, Joseph Fielding Smith has written:
“This doctrine [i.e. the priesthood ban] did not originate with President Brigham Young but was taught by the Prophet Joseph Smith. At a meeting of the general authorities of the Church, held August 22, 1895, the question of the status of the Negro in relation to the Priesthood was asked and the minutes of that meeting say:
“‘President George Q. Cannon remarked that the Prophet taught this doctrine: That the seed of Cain could not receive the Priesthood until the seed of Abel should come forward and take precedence over Cain’s offspring.’”
(Joseph Fielding Smith, The Way to Perfection, p. 110).

I learned a lot and would like to hear a presentation about the three priesthoods. I came across the original teachings about the Patriarchal priesthood obtained in the temple while reading the Teachings of Joseph Smith but the quotes there were limited.
Since Eldred was released, were his keys rolled into the First Presidency or was the Patriarch to the church acting under the direction of the Prophet?

How did Father Lehi have the Melchizedek Priesthood if the only tribe to have the Priesthood was the Levites?

    • @charlottegrigg4194

Taught on church website: Melchizedek Priesthood Taken from Israel
Abraham gave the priesthood to his son Isaac, and Isaac gave it to his son Jacob. Jacob’s name was changed to Israel, and thereafter Jacob’s descendants were known as the children of Israel.
In Moses’ day, after he had led the children of Israel out of Egypt, the Lord offered the children of Israel the fulness of His gospel. They rejected it, however, so the Lord took away from them the Melchizedek Priesthood and the higher ordinances of the gospel. They were left with laws that were to direct the physical, or temporal, activities of the people. These laws were administered by the Aaronic Priesthood (named after Aaron, the brother of Moses). Most of these laws are found in the books of Exodus, Leviticus, and Deuteronomy in the Old Testament. They were not meant to replace the fulness of the gospel, but were given as a way to prepare the children of Israel to live the gospel in its fulness at a later time.
Even though the Melchizedek Priesthood was taken from Israel as a nation, it was not permanently taken from the earth. Between the time of Moses and the coming of Jesus Christ, several prophets held the Melchizedek Priesthood. Some of these prophets were Elijah, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lehi, Daniel, and Ezekiel.
Refer to the Mosaic dispensation pictured on the chart and read Doctrine and Covenants 84:6.

The Levitical priesthood was restricted to Levites. The Melchizedek priesthood was not exclusively for one tribe. When Father Lehi and his descendants came to the promised land they only operated with the higher, or Melchizedek priesthood. There is no reference to them ever using specifically the lower, or Levitical priesthood until after Jesus came and fulfilled the law. Which was when it changed.

The righteous in the Book of Mormon like Lehi and Nephi would have been ordained to the “Holy Order” which is another name for the Melchizedek priesthood. The Levitical and Aaronic Priesthoods are appendages to the holy order. Lehi and his posterity were descended from Mannasas and could have been ordained by others in the family line or by angelic ministry. Read D&C 84, which mentions being ordained by the hand of God. The current record does not mention who gave them the ordination, but Nephi says he has seen the redeemer, so he likely had his calling and election made sure, which requires the Melchizedek priesthood and ordinances.

      @derrikconrad4235 Місяць тому

Joseph Smith also explained that all prophets before Christ came, after Moses, received the Melchizedek Priesthood by direct calling from God. So likely, Lehi would have received it the same way Jeremiah did.

I think that happiness is going to be the very thing that holds people from progressing in the lower GLORIES.
(We shouldn’t think of them as glorified “Hell”. They aren’t.)
And that thought comes from just watching people around us.
You can tell who wants more and who is perfectly happy where they are.
But I’m also thinking there are many professions here that will not be there.
      People will need to change.
But it’s how that change comes about that matters.
Are we anxiously engaged or do we do it grudgingly?
I even wonder for myself, “will the end of the test lift the weight off my shoulder so much that I won’t desire to progress from where I am?”
It’s a legit reality that many people have, or will have, that reality. 🤷‍♂️

Very enlightening presentation. Thank you. Question: there were some who were denied priesthood ordinances like the endowment and marriage covenant because of the color of their skin. How do we square that with your presentation whcih said theyd only be denied the administration of the priesthood not the participation? Is it because at that point, the those ordinances, while participatory are also administrative? As in, you must have the melkiszedek priesthood to become endowed with power and to enter the new and everlasting covenant?

    • @bruce_porter
      @bruce_porter  10 місяців тому +3

Priesthood is an authority of administration not participation. Holding the priesthood is not required to be baptized, partake of the sacrament, or be baptized for the dead. The temple endowment does not require one to hold the priesthood to participate (as in the case of women) D&C 84:19+ explains the priesthood is required to administer the ordinances. The priesthood administration has been restricted through biblical time, from the first born or one that opens the womb, to all of Israel being restricted except for. the Levites. It is an authority of administration so that the ordinance will be recorded on the records of the church. Sorry my plane is about to takeoff.

This is a very interesting question. My best answer to it is that all things will be revealed in the Millennium, and we don’t get to know all things before then. The sealed portion of the Book of Mormon contains the entire record of the history of the Earth, but will not be had “in the day of wickedness”. So, the Earth is to be cleansed first (end of the Telestial level wicked). This is to happen very soon.
From Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith p. 113 (as per Kindle):
“the end of the world is the destruction of the wicked, the harvest and the end of the world have an allusion directly to the human family in the last days, instead of the earth, as many have imagined; and that which shall PRECEDE (emphasis mine) the coming of the Son of Man, and the restitution of all things.”
So, soon…you (and I, and the rest of us) will have our answer.

As you read that chapter and the chapter heading, it becomes clear that this is speaking of the Millennium, not the resurrection. After this life, we have a “bright recollection of all our guilt” and any sin must be paid for by the person and through the atonement of Christ. We don’t lose the guilt through resurrection. We lose the guilt through repentance and Atonement.
Joseph Smith said our probation continues in the Spirit World. We can still repent. (But less to repent for if we start NOW)

Under the Mosaic law, none were able to receive exalting temple ordinances through the Melchezidek priesthood. The sons of Levi had only the Aaronic priesthood. In our day, it is necessary for men to receive the Melchezidek priesthood before they can receive temple ordinances. So while it is technically correct to say that receipt of the priesthood is not necessary to receive salvation, it leaves out the blessings of the temple, including receipt of patriarchal priesthood through the sealing ordinance.

I mean we know the spirit of the Lord rested on David when he was anointed and remained with him ever after that.
That kinda sounds like the holy ghost falling on people. If David did Indeed receive the holy ghost then he had something that really no one besides prophets in ancient Israel had.
It would explain why multiple of the psalms attributed to David prophetically described the messiah and also personal experiences where David being the one writing claims to have seen and heard the Lord for himself and indeed parts almost read like he had visions.
All of this makes way more sense if he did have the holy ghost and if he had the holy ghost then why would the Lord withhold the priesthood from him?
