    Butane - Doesn't burn below 0c
    Propane - Burns down to -40c/f
    Gas cans are mostly Butane because it burns more efficiently, therefore its cheaper and lighter.
    But they mix in some propane to give it a bit of a lower operating temperature, so just look for a high propane content when using in cold weather.

    As long as theres a decent amount of gas in the canister I've never had a problem with normal gas in the winter, i made a ' jacket ' out of an old bit of thick sleeping mat taped up and slides over canister, plus another piece cut into a circle to fit on the bottom with three cut outs for the tripod stand. Use it every winter even in snow. I have one of those adapter valves so i can transfer gas from one can to another or you can just put part filled cans away til the summer.

    I have a free standing stove and in these conditions I can shake it up and turn it upside down which helps. Also put your gas canister in your trouser pocket to get it nice and warm.

    One advantage of using a wind shield with your stove, some of the trapped heat keeps the canister warm and lets you run at lower temps. For winter or high altitude I love my petrol coleman stove works anywhere all the time 😀

    Hey. Boil some water, get a cup that is slightly larger than your canister, pour some hot water in it and then place your canister inside. Your canister will put out more. That tiny temp difference is all it needs. From NW Ontario, Canada.
    Winter fuel also helps too. But with my experience using MSR 4 season, I was also suffering the same problem. The above hack works, left the Dragonfly stove at home.

    Thanks Paul, great video as always👍 made my mouth water just watching! To help with the gas issue just make a small pot-cosy and as long as you keep it as low as possible and away from the flame you won’t have any issues, but yes, it’s easier to keep meths at burning temperature, failing that any gas stove with a pre-heat tube, like the Primus Spider will sort you out, you can also invert the canister as the liquid gas is vaporised in the tube before it gets to the burner 😂 hope that helps! My son uses this stove in the Norwegian winter.

    The liquid gas inside the canister draws heat from the metal canister in order for the liquid to boil and vaporise as gas. If the ambient air temperature is low then the vaporisation is a lot slower.

    Easy fix for the gas, A bit of copper 1 inch wide, and a magnet to hold it on the can..
    Cut the copper and bend it so it's near the flame the heat transfers from the flame down the copper to the can... You can bend the copper in or out from the flame if it gets too warm.
    Only in cold weather tho.
    Been doing this for years, and was able to use my gas well above the artic circle when others had change to fuel stoves..

To get around it, I'd heat up a mess tin of water for a few minutes, and then plonk the canister in the heated water to give it some umph when I was cooking with it. Looks very tasty. I think I’d make those up at home in the kitchen and bring them in a ziplock to save all the faff of cutting crusts off in the field. 😂👍. I guess some people will enjoy the full outdoors kitchen experience though! With the gas problem in the cold - I use an Alpkit Koros stove. I think there are a number of advantages of hose-type gas stoves over canister top stoves - much more stable, lower to the ground so you can use a smaller wind shield, and when it’s cold and the gas is condensing to a liquid in the canister, you can invert the canister and so the fuel will continue to flow. There’s also a pre-heat pipe so that if the fuel is flowing in liquid form from the inverted canister, it gets pre-heated and converts back to gas before it reaches the nozzle. You can also gently and carefully shake the canister if you have to without having to take your pot off the heat. Great stove for cooking with gas when it’s cold and they’re only about £45 for a 125g titanium stove. 👍

    Gas stoves have always had issues with cold weather. In the early days of gas canister stoves the usual gas was mostly(entirely) butane and while I loved my "modern" gas stove it was pretty useless in a winter camp in the Highlands especially in snow . Todays stoves seem to use a mixture of gases,. Primus "Power Gas" uses a '4season mix' of Butane ,isobutane and propane .
    It may help if you can compare different brands gas cans to find a different mix. Although I have not had the opportunity to try it I have been told that MSR 80/20 is good for cold weather.
    Maybe a good topic for a youtube vid 😊😊

Beef casserole, 21 mins cooking time which is perfect for the Trangia when full.. dice everything and do all your prep in the house, ingredients are, diced pre-cooked shoulder beef, potatoes, carrots, onions, olive oil, oxo and gravy granules.. it's actually a lot easier than messing around with pizza, fry the veg and beef in olive oil for 3-5 mins, add the oxo with boiled water, simmer for 15 mins until veg are soft then add bisto granules. leave to stand for 3 mins, Way better than any dried meal.. or Pizza snack and it's perfect fuel for winter hikes. hope you try it. 😊

    Hi Paul,what bag was that?Gear list is saying exos 48,also why do you bring the smallest gas canister when your only as you said 3 miles from home,I know it’s part of your cooking packing set up but it’s not very cost effective,appreciate the videos👍

    Nice recipe idea Paul - bet that went down a treat on a chilly day👍
    Always resort to one of my meths stoves when weather goes subzero - although I know ‘winter’ gas is available nowadays. Not of the brussel sprout variety. 🤣
    Have you tried a gas canister ‘sock’ ? - as a mate of mine swears by it, and won’t use meths because of the smell.

    I was interested in how modern gas stove would be in the cold weather, you just answered my question the exact same as 20+ years ago. In the late 1990s we tried gas stove up Ben Lomond on a snow/icy winters day, wet and cold we fired up the gas stoves for coffee and lasted 3 mins before they froze and no hot water, since then I used Trangia stoves but the cooking time is slow but consistent but works in all weather at least. Would be good to see the cold canisters would work at below 0 and in windy conditions probably -10 wind chill. I know this sounds extreme but i have been out in plenty conditions like this ie headtorches during the day as snow is so thick and dark clouds at heights.
    I watch you channel a lot and enjoy the reviews on equipment as mine are old and need updated but have never let me down so keep using them

      My gas stoves have not be efficient in autumn and spring with a bit a chilly damp and cold winds. The actual outside temps were ambient too. They are great in summer though but it doesn't actually have to be that cold for them to loose efficiency

    • @karenripley3678

      Liquid feed (ie inverted canister) with gas stove equiped with pre-heat pipe is the answer. Wind chill has no effect upon inanimate, non-moist, objects.. they can't be cooled below ambient. I've used Kovea stove using n-butane only (cheapo 99p supermarket canisters) well below 0°C. The problem with upright stoves when using propane 30%/ n-butane 70% mix in temperatures approaching freezing, is that the propane molecules vapourises first leaving only the butane .. the resultant gas vapour pressure drops to an extent that it's unusable. Stoves equipped with gas-regulators are useless under such circumstances too. (there's little pressure to regulate).

    • @antduke2361
      @antduke2361 3 роки тому

      @@karenripley3678 The Butane ones you mention have been the worse ones I've ever tried in conditions no where near Freezing

    • @karenripley3678
      @karenripley3678 3 роки тому

      @@antduke2361 Butane-only in very cold weather needs a liquid feed (ie pre-heater pipe) stove. Only stipulation is to fire it up on gas feed using gas canister warmed inside clothing. Otherwise use Propane/Butane mix ... the propane vaporises below zero enabling the pre-heat pipe to heat up sufficiently.. a minute or so.. for the canister to be inverted for liquid feed.

    I was struggling with a canister stove in the chill the other day and was like, "I bet this never happens to Paul Messner." During the winter, I normally switch back to alcohol stoves, but have been looking into remote or "inverted" canister stoves as another option.

      I really like my remote stove (10yrs old now and have never gone back to using a can-top stove), but wish mine had a preheat tube so I can safely invert the can.

      In cold weather, just use a propane (or propane/butane mix) canister.

    • @justvin7214
      @justvin7214 3 роки тому

      @@Frank_NemoYou might have said just use petrol too There is still a limit for propane/butane mix - if you can liquid feed a gas stove you can use it in lower temperatures.

    I literally paid $20 AUD (about $15 USD) for a 24cm Tefal pan and used a screwdriver to remove the handle for later quick re-installation on the trail. This skillet costs $90 AUD directly from Jetboil, plus $10 shipping, putting it at $100 AUD (approx $77 USD) for a skillet that's both smaller and no better in its cooking abilities than a $20 Tefal from the supermarket. The folding handle is convenient I guess, but the price is horrendous for what it is...
