Unlocking HIDDEN POTENTIAL in fish waste! Building a mineralization tank for aquaponics

  • It turns out that most aquaponic systems are missing out on a lot of the nutrients that are available to them! In this video I talk all about mineralization tanks and how they can greatly increase your system's ability to utilize nutrients by digesting all of that poop your fish make. I also show you how I built mine!

Link to Dr. Wilson Lennard's Aquaponic Factsheet on solid waste management, which includes further guidelines for mineralization tanks (including sizing): www.aquaponic.c...
*Please note that I did NOT follow the correct sizing procedures in the above link because I was unable to get an accurate measurement of daily average effluent production from my swirl filter. The sizing that I chose for my tank is a very rough approximation. I HIGHLY recommend that you size your mineralization tank using the above guidelines if at all possible.*
UPDATE: It has been brought to my attention that the figures for pump sizing in this video are not correct for this use case. The 60 LPM pump I am running on this 20 gal mineralization tank is slightly too small. For a tank of this size I would have gotten the next size up. Despite this, the mineralization tank is functioning quite effectively!
I am also pleased to announce that I have recently been featured in an episode of the Green Market Agorist podcast! (I was already in the process of editing together all of the footage when the episode was released, so I wanted to let you all know here). If anarchist politics is your thing, you should check it out.

Very good informative video. However that music gets a little loud and distracting at times when you're talking.

We like to refer to our own designed system as a "Nutrient Generator". We use the nutrients to feed in stages to feed in the greenhouse plants as well as field crops thru drip emitters. With drip setups the water has to be filtered like crazy without stripping out the goodies.

    Hi,
Is there a way to convert fish waste into clear water?
    Thanks & Regards,

I HIGHLY recommend using a full drain tank for this. your cleanouts will be way easier. also building small systems first as prototypes. i used a 5gal water bottle upside down with the bottom cut out for my pond filter. theres a relatively common size rubber coupler (2.5in?) that fits them.

also those chinese made ecoair pumps are great. ive had one running for years straight, and it's outside in the elements too. also their ecoplus mag drive water pumps are great, have one running my fsh tank sump for 8 years now.

LOL, look at these "suggestions/complaints" in the comments.
this was really well done man, Appreciate the work, very simple and well designed.
The music and editing is to make it sicker, and pump you up to build it. These complainers will never build anything anyways man. Keep up the good work.

I'm from Indonesia by the way, so good to see a young man to have a concern in sustainable farming (in which i cant find a lot in my country). I have been planning and slowly building my own aquaponic system so i hope i can inspire others, especially the youth. just like u inspire me

Just what I was looking for.
    You made it so simple.
Thanks for sharing the wealth of information.
    Appreciate your work and frankness.
Is it possible to let it mineralize for 4 weeks?
Would you add red worms to it?

Hi. Does all the fish poop gets decomposed in the MT? Noticed that you do not have a bottom drain in your MT. Thanks!

Now after a year of this video ,
    Did that idea succeed ?
What changes on plants appeared after this while?
Did you face any problems ?
After this experiment what are the results ?

So far this mineralization tank has been working really well! I have had to reduce the need to supplement substantially.
I ended up having to increase the air volume flowing through the mineralization tank because it was less effective with the pump I was using in the video. That is the only change I had to make to it.
I will do an updated aquaponic system tour video in the future and I will go over the mineralization tank in that video!

In fish keeping, there are a few sludge eliminating products and some products like api quickstart that help convert ammonia to nitrites and nitrates. I am wondering if you would know if using these would be helpful in speeding up the mineralization of fish wastes and chemicals.
I know that there are nitrogen fixing bacteria in api quickstart and related products but not sure about these so called sludge eliminating products, they don’t seem to have a list of bacteria species they use.

    • @TheSolarpunkFarmer
      @TheSolarpunkFarmer  Рік тому

Good question! I only use those types of products when cycling a system or in an emergency situation where there is a deadly ammonia/nitrite spike. A properly designed and functioning system will have a strong microbiome and enough biological surface area to mineralize all fish waste products efficiently

Can you connect a toilet (for human use) to the mineralization tank?

Thank you for sharing. how many days or lets say how often do you drain the solids from your newly installed mineralisation tank?

    • @TheSolarpunkFarmer
      @TheSolarpunkFarmer  4 роки тому

Once a day! I am flushing out about 30-40% of the volume of the mineralization tank per day right now.
