    I just made my first Musselburgh hat and made the Adult Medium. My gauge was 6 sts per inch on a US size 2 and I used Herd of Cats- Road Trip Sock yarn started out with 433 yards / 103 grams in the skein. 75% SW Merino/ 25% Nylon 4 ply. I used only 77 grams so I could have made it longer but I didn't want alot of slouch. Total Length Crown to Crown 20.5 inches / Width was 10 inches / With Folded 2.5 inch Brim measuring 7.78 inches / No fold 10.1 inches. I absolutely love your podcast!! Please keep posting them. I truly love everything you make and adore your personality! Pure Joy to watch

    If you have a dehumidifier in your basement, you can block non-superwash, non-lace knits on a folding drying rack in front of it! That’s what I do 😊 most knits don’t need to be pinned-my knits dry within 2 days this way, unless they’re Alafosslopi.

    We do things for others on a regular basis. As we knit for ourselves I'm thinking about changing the phrase to "self care knitting". As we take time for ourselves we gain the resources to take better care of others.

    If you look at the musselberg, you will see that you didn’t have enough yardage to make it as long as it was meant to be. You also have to remember that you need to decide how long to make this hat the way you want; size of turn up of brim, slouch or no slouch, etc. will influence how long to make it.

    I also use the Knitters Pride "universe" of interchangeable needles. I mostly use Lantern Moon, but I also have some of the Gratitude cords and they're great. You could check out the lantern moon cords too if you're interested in another great option. I think they're simply the best cords. I also wanted to mention that if you don't already have them, there's a cord connector you can buy. It's inexpensive and allows you to connect two cords together! This is how I try on my items. Simply take off your needle, connect another longer cord with a stopper at the end, and voila! You can try it on so quickly! No need to transfer stitches to a barber cord. Then you just switch back to the needle when you're ready you knit again. It's so painless, I don't know why I don't see more people doing it this way.

    Hi Nora! Throughly enjoyed your podcast as usual. I have knit 2 musselburgh hats now, one in handspun and one in hand dyed sock yarns. In both cases I knit the adult medium using the stitch count for the smallest gauge on US 2 needles and in both cases I had to add yarn for the crown decreases to get the length needed to roll the brim because I ran out of yarn. I don't know how it knits up with thicker yarn, but I found that, with my tension at least, a 100g skein of sock yarn was not enough to fully knit the pattern. That being said, I don't mind the colour change because I have it on the inside, and the hat is wonderfully warm, but I wouldn't necessarily call it a 1 skein project when I knit it.

    I made the musselburgh and had 30 gram left. Most fingering weight yarns have over 400 m of yarn so your yarn definitly fell short of others. Mine did turn out a bit too small too, but not to much. I can still fold the brim.
    With th projects I would go for 3 at least instead of 2. One intricate, one simple and then 1 wild card.

    You should try the latern moon cords too. I like them a little bit more than the mindful. I found the mindful break at the join easily, but the lantern moon cords are super sturdy and more like the chiaogoo cords. They fit with the knitters pride needles and usually come in a 2 pack so they seem more expensive but you’re actually getting 2 of the size you ordered.

    Paused the video at 7:25 to answer your question about the Musselburgh hat. I knit mine on 7,5 gauge. Started first half with a 50grams ball of fingering yarn then changed yarn for the other half. I was left rather disappointed bc at the end of the hat I had to decide whether I liked to have a folded brim on a ridiculously short hat or wear it slouchier than what my intention was. Sooo long story short: in my personal experience this is NOT a one skein hat, if you like it folded. I think I'd like at least another 6cm for knitting it to a length that makes sense to me. I have my second one already in my needles

  • @PurpleAlipineFlower
    @PurpleAlipineFlower 5 місяців тому

    I had to add more length to my musselburgh. I had used 2 different yarns so I ended up cutting it in half and then adding more of the color I wanted to show on the outside and the. Kitchner stitched it back together. It was a hassle but I am glad I did because it is much warmer now that I can fold the brim. It is 23” now but I have a small head. Maybe you could rip back the end and add another color for more length. It is less effort than knitting another fingering hat. ❤

    I've never knit a Musselburgh with it (I have my first one on the needles now) but in my experience, skinny singles is a bit light on yardage compared to other fingering weight yarns - I knit the Lone Skein shawl out of it last year (which is meant to be out of one skein, hence the name) and I ran out of yarn. I think if I run short on my Musselburgh I might do the second crown in another color, and just tuck that one inside! It will be my little secret, and I'll get rid of some scraps too

    Regarding the yardage for the Musselburgh hat, when I look at the pattern it does say that with a gauge of 9 stitches per inch, adult medium requires 520 yards/480 metres so I think it’s understandable that the hat came out a bit short with 366 m - that’s the yardage required for a baby sized hat at that gauge ❤ it’s super pretty though!! I used lang 150 merino to make my husband a medium musselburgh on the 9stitch per inch gauge and it took me part of a 4th 50g ball to make, so over 150g! Made to pattern measurements. I was glad I didn’t try to make it out of 100grams, as I didn’t have a way to buy more

    Most fingering weight skeins have about 400-437 of yarn so that might help you have a longer Musselburgh. I just finished one out of gentle whisper yarn and got a really nice deep turn back on it.

    My best fitting Musselburgh was knit on 3 mm needles at a 6.5 st per inch gauge. Adult medium used about 446 yards or 408 meters of fingering weight or 102 grams. I should get the length from crown to crown too…

    I’ve made several Mussleburghs in worsted weight, dk weight and sport. That seems to make a full size hat. I haven’t tried fingering weight yet. I’m going to guess that you are right about the yardage of your yarn where the size is concerned.

    Nora love your earrings! I just love unique earrings. The purse looks cool, good job. Great idea with having an adjustable strap. Regarding your cardigan: I don’t know if your familiar with the movie “The Parent Trap” (Lindsey Lohan version, my favorite movie) anyway, there’s a scene where Chessy meets Annie for the first time & says, while crying: “She’s so beautiful! She’s so big! Can I hug her?” Nora… when you lifted your Korshavn Cardigan, I said those words out loud. 😆 Gosh, I’m such a dork. Nora, she looks so good, great job! “Holy cow”, indeed! This cardigan is on my to-do list & I love that double knit situation on the button band- so slick.

    I made an adult medium Musselburgh and at first I knitted it at an adult medium 8.5 stitches per inch, but when I got to the continuous stockinette part I was worried it was too big so I decreased to knit it to a 7.5 stitches per inch gauge, which is what I was actually knitting. I had a tighter gauge for the increase rows than the stockinette section, which threw me off since you are supposed to measure your gauge during the increase section. Maybe now that it’s blocked, you can re-measure your gauge and see if you are still at 9 stitches per inch. If not, you can make the next hat following your new gauge and hopefully that will mean less stitches around the hat so you can get more length.
    That being said, I ended up with the same final measurement as you at 23 inches, but I find I have a lot of brim. Perhaps it’s a difference in the shape of different people’s heads? Also, I don’t like a lot of room up top so perhaps it’s a preference thing as well :)

    • @akaNoraKnits
      @akaNoraKnits  5 місяців тому

      Totally could just be head shape and fit and I think that’s all so personal! I should go ahead and remeasure my gauge. I know I measured it one more time before I made it through the increases but I do wonder!!

    • @tovalieberman8326
      @tovalieberman8326 5 місяців тому

      I’m so glad you mentioned this! I am making one for my toddler and am finding the main portion of the hat looks waaaaayyy too wide. I was thinking my gauge during the increases must be so different and was trying to decide what to do. I chose to move on and finish it as-is because I’m so close to the decreases. I hope your hat turned out nicely!

    Hi there! Knitting my Korshavn while watching. Love yours! Just wondering when you picked up for the double knit band, do you pick up every stitch because the band is stockinette? Or did you use the same stitch count as if you were doing the ribbed band?

    🌴☀️Can’t wait to see dads finished pullover awesomeness…relax it’ll be fine and it look sooooo nice Nora 👕
    Musslebrough: I made the Easy V Sweater with Fisherman’s Wool & Patons both are worsted. Then made the hat with the same yarn BUT I didn’t block it nor wear it actually as yet. I used a 4mm US 6 though and didn’t make it as a fold over brim. I think what happened here is you were limited at the start with the amount of yarn designated for this project because otherwise, you would have had a more substantial brim 🕵️ I still like it
    Clutch Bag: WOW you did a marvelous job 😮 it looks store bought NORAAAA🥰 it looks red on camera to me
    Cardigan: you slayed that button band like mic 🎤 drop!!! I like this version miles more than the first one. OMG 😂the gobble arm😭 who needs to watch a comedy, just watch Aka Nora Knits
    Wips: I’m finishing things. 1. Seaglass Tee and 2. Sailor Swift Top. I like making in advance for the seasons to come so I can actually “wear” the things lol
    Cables: I’m soooo happy you tried the cables and their so darn cute the stoppers eh🥰🤭

    I hate the phrase “selfish knitting” … no one is entitled to our time, money, or skills. Knit whatever you want for whomever you want. If it brings you joy, it is enough.

    • @akaNoraKnits
      @akaNoraKnits  5 місяців тому +1

      It’s so interesting, I’ve had a few people comment on the phrase now. I see what you all are saying, but it’s funny because I totally meant it as a true selfish knit. As in there are other patterns I want to knit for myself (and others-and no one is expecting any knits from me) and I just went with a guilty pleasure of basic stockinette with some fun stripes yarn! Total selfish knitting in a good way-like just accepting that I want to eat the whole box of cookies in one sitting 😂 I hope that makes sense!!
