A long time ago, when the first trees of the world started appearing, there were no bacteries capable of decomposing them yet and they would grow and cover the ground as they die, other trees would grow on top of them and with the weight of the new trees the ones under would get compressed and as that process repeated for a long effin time, long after the old ground made of dead trees was covered by sediment (generated by nature finally decomposing new trees) and then covered again by geological forces, the coal we use today is made of that, a shame we gotta burn it, i imagine theres probably some interesting secrets hidden inside the coal.
