- The story of David and Goliath in 1 Samuel 17 may have been lifted from a little-known warrior named Elhanan. The story of Elhanan is preserved in 2 Samuel 19. So why does Samuel contain two stories of a hero slaying a Philistine giant named Goliath? Find out in this video. We also cover Goliath's height. How tall was Goliath? Did Elhanan actually defeat the brother of Goliath? Why did the Chronicler change Goliath to Goliath's brother?
Who Killed Goliath? Who Truly Killed Goliath, David or Lahmi? A MISTAKE IN THE BIBLE? (Who killed Goliath?) How Tall was the Philistine Giant Goliath? Cubits Explained. The Truth About David And Goliath, This is How Tall Goliath REALLY Was

Thanks again, Lachlan. I know sometimes you have to re-upload videos.
I really enjoyed the conversation you had with Paul. I definitely subscribed to him.
Having Paul **Davidson** cancelling David's famous feat makes it wonderful family drama. Good luck in the succession war, Davidson! (Could not resist, but am not ashamed.)
Haha that's amazing!
Wow. I respect that you have made your opinions, but you are taking a huge leap to say that David didn't kill Goliath. I see you have challenged a bible reader to think deeper on these things with the different verses. That's fine, but you have to compare scripture with scripture to get a complete understanding. Spreading this information gives me the impression you don't have faith in the GOD's word. If I am wrong please correct me. We read in 1 Samuel 17: 2 David killed Goliath in the "Valley of Elah" Then in 2 Samuel 21:19 We see Elhanan was fighting in Gob and killed what we are told is Goliath. Well later in 1 Chronicles 20:5 We are told that Elhanan killed Lahmi the brother of Goliath. I think this additional verse and others should be included to make any conclusions. Also see Samuel 21:9 where again we are told David kills Goliath the Philistine. My thought is when we look at the Bible as a whole we see a bigger picture and comparing just two verses doesn't give us a clear answer. I don't claim to know answer (although I have my thoughts), but to me it's clear these are not the same Goliath and David did indeed kill Goliath as we are told in 1 Samuel 17.
"Well later in 1 Chronicles 20:5 We are told that Elhanan killed Lahmi the brother of Goliath. I think this additional verse and others should be included to make any conclusions."
If you scroll to the 6-minute mark, we discuss that passage and why it says that. The broad consensus is that the Chronicler was faced with the discrepancy while adapting Samuel, so he changed two or three letters to similar letters to turn “the Bethlehemite” into the direct object marker plus the word "Lahmi", which isn't really a name (it means bread), and turned the original direct object marker into the word "brother", since they look pretty similar in Hebrew.
"it's clear these are not the same Goliath"
Since both passages describe him the same very unique way as having a spear "like a weaver's beam", it really does seem that the text is talking about the same Goliath.
If you allow for the possibility that the biblical authors didn't mind combining different traditions in tension with each other, then the possibility that El-Hanan was the original slayer of Goliath has the most explanatory power. At the end of the day, I want to understand what the Bible says and how it was written, even if that challenges religious dogma about the Bible.
David ------- killed Goliath. To just as the Bible says.
@@InquisitiveBible You claim
" both passages describe him the same very unique way as having a spear like a weaver's beam" both can have the same equipment if they are indeed from the same same militia, he may not neceserly be his "brother" (maybe they exagerrated this translation) but maybe there was an expression to say that he is the likes of the other goliath whom David fought, which is not uncommon among the philistinites :
1 chronicle 20:6 There was another battle at Gath. There was a tall man there, who had six fingers on each hand and on each foot, twenty-four in all, and he was also descended from Rapha. "
The goliath whom David fought is not described in the same physical way as that of Elhanan's account, only the spear's description is common (and this detail of spear could be either a similarity, which is not uncommon considering it's essentially the same military or the mixing of two traditions), what is sure however is that the tradition of the slaying of a [specifically] nine foot being is only attributed to David, you can only speculate about how it was initially elhanan's account.
@InquisitiveBible
Exactly, I share your opinion. It is obvious though.
Elhanan did it; that's the truth.
I can't believe I'd never heard this before!
Same. When I was in Sunday school, it was always David who killed Goliath.
@@mustachemac5229 because religion are all about lies 😒😇
@@mustachemac5229 Nope; Elhanan did it.
I was today’s yrs old when I found this out. I never knew.
Great stuff. I'll be including this video in this month's Biblical Studies Carnival!

Brilliant.
Thanks for watching
@@TabletsAndTemples Thanks for creating excellent content :) Keep it up
David not only stole Uriah's wife, but also Elhanan's merit.
One nit.
Goliath is described in great detail. In the story he is a 10th century Philistine.
He is described wearing the amour of an 8th/7th century Greek Hoplite.
#JusticeForElhanan 😄
You know that those two goliaths were different. They were from the same people that were very large. They were not the same person.
They clearly are the same guy. Two dudes named Goliath with a spear like a weavers beam. The author very clearly appropriated David into the story.
I came here from FriendlyJordies :)
No mercy for stooges
Sorry for the lecture but, although I like analysis of the Bible, when I consider the huge effort made with the King James Version by those scholars utilising Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek and Latin texts, I think twice before jumping to any revisions. The KJV says Elhanan killed the brother of Goliath, as explained, but I notice the _New Standard Revised Version_ (1989) passage had to be used which says Elhanan killed Goliath. My money is on the older text from more pious times.
For example, I was introduced to the New World Translation Bible by Jehovah's Witnesses. Noting its American origin, I analysed it to see whether it was tainted by Racism. I searched the word 'Ethiopia' and discovered that whenever there are negative references to Ethiopia e.g. 2 Chr 14.12 _'So the LORD smote the Ethiopians before Asa, and before Judah; and the Ethiopians fled',_ you will see 'Ethiopia', but whenever there are positive references e.g. Num 12.1 _'And Miriam and Aaron spake against Moses because of the Ethiopian woman whom he had married: for he had married an Ethiopian woman',_ Ethiopia is changed to 'Cush.' When the JW told me Ethiopia and Cush mean the same thing, I replied "If they mean the same thing, _why change it?"_ Even _that_ passage is changed to Moses _took_ (not married) a Cushite wife. The NSRV makes similar amendments to the NWT.
I don't believe I must seek out the original texts to know The Bible. The hard work has already been done. I believe the root of Bible analysis is to cause doubt as to its value and thus weaken belief, hence reference to the authors changing texts to accord with myths, but such are the times. Nonetheless, _'Wisdom is justified of all her children.'_
Thank you for this I am also reviweing the NWT against the KJV.
David killed Goliath. The word "brother" is removed in modern bibles such as the NIV. This is what happens when "scholars" and "critics" apply "higher criticism" to the Word of God...
I think you've mixed two different passages up.
@@TabletsAndTemples
"In another battle with the Philistines at Gob, Elhanan son of Jaare-Oregim[a] the Bethlehemite killed Goliath[b] the Gittite, who had a spear with a shaft like a weaver's rod." -- 2 Samuel 21:19 NIV (1881-1885)(1984)
@@fireee5488 Yes, "brother" is not present in that passage - which is correct because it is not present in the Hebrew.
@@TabletsAndTemples
***The "scholars" couldn't figure out the Hebrew text they had, and removed the "brothers" italics from the AV.*** , which is the correct interpretation.
The good ol English AV is both more *practical* and *superior* to Greek/Hebrew as well + the faulty men who try to interpret them with their little lexicons
Nice try, bro; Elhanan did it.
I don’t believe there are errors in the Bible so there has to be an explanation.
"Scholars believe that, although we first encounter Goliath in 1 Samuel when he is killed by David, the original killer of Goliath was actually Elhanan: the authors altered the original text to credit the victory to David, so he was associated with the heroic deed. (After all, who knows Elhanan’s name? Whereas David is one of the most famous characters in the whole of the Old Testament.)"
Quit imposing your dogma on the Bible. Let the text operate on it's own terms. You're pushing your own agenda on the Bible and that's a bad idea.
It was the brother don't fool people

Cope more.
What the fuck's a Lami?
Well to the Chronicler it was the name of Goliath's brother. But, it's not a name that was ever used again, so it probably was a corruption of Bethlehemite (lehemi = Lahmi) in order to create this new character, Goliath's brother.
