    Location
    1. The Valley of Elah is about 15 miles (23 km.) west of Bethlehem and about 20 miles (32 km.) east of the Mediterranean Sea.
    2. It’s located on the western edge of the Judean lower hills and was an important travel route from the coastal cities up to the center of the land of Judah and its main cities of Bethlehem, Jerusalem, and Hebron.
    3. It’s an undeveloped site that can be seen in its natural state. It has parking alongside Hwy 38.
    4. The Valley of Elah is best known for the epic battle between young David and the giant Goliath, a skilled veteran warrior.
    Historical Background
    1. The Philistines were a Canaanite people who inhabited Israel before the Israelites arrived.
    2. The Israelites were unable to conquer them, and there were battles between the two nations for much of Israel’s history.
    3. The Philistine’s stronghold was on the coastal plane in the Gaza area.
    4. They were powerful, cultured, and possessed iron. They were the high-tech people of the day and did all they could to prohibit Israel from gaining iron and access to their technology (1 Sam. 13:19).
    5. They worshipped many false gods, among them was the worship of Baal.
    6. At this time in Israel’s history, the Philistines were attempting to push up through the Valley of Elah towards the heart of Judah. King Saul and his army engaged with the Philistines here to stop them.
    7. The battle was one of the most pivotal between the two nations with the loser agreeing to serve the winner. It was a “winner takes all” kind of battle.
    8. Later in King Saul’s life, he would be killed by the Philistines in the Gilboa area.
    9. David would eventually subdue the Philistines, and during the time of Solomon, there was peace between the two nations.
    10. David was probably around 16-18 years old when he fought Goliath. We'll see this as the story unfolds.
    Places of Interest
    1. Israelite Camp
    2. Philistine Camp at Ephes-dammin
    3. Valley of Elah
    4. Tel Azekah
    5. Tel Socoh (Socho)
    6. HaEla Stream (where David selected 5 smooth stones)
    7. Battle Location
    8. King David’s Palace (built when David became King as a memorial to his victory)
    Bible Passage: 1 Samuel 17:1-51
Faith Lesson from the Valley of Elah
    1. The outcome of the battle was far more significant than we might realize. If the Israelites lost, they would become the servants of the Philistines. It was a “winner takes all” battle.
    2. David’s motivation in the battle was the glory of God and the protection of His name. “So that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel” (1 Sam. 17:46).
    3. During David’s youth as a shepherd, he developed many skills. He learned music, how to write, use a sling, how to fight to protect his sheep, and how to love the Lord and obey Him.
    4. God used David’s skill of using a sling, along with his love for the Lord, to defeat Goliath.
    5. The skills David developed as a youth he used throughout his life. He faithfully led the nation Israel, he instilled a love for the Lord in his kingdom, and he wrote many Psalms that were not only used in his day but throughout history to this day.
    6. David knew that it’s not the size of our weapons but the size of our faith in God that matters. He went into the battle full of faith, and confident God would give him the victory.
    7. Do I understand that it’s my responsibility to develop my abilities, and it’s God’s responsibility to direct me in how I use them?
    8. Do I realize that the most important skill I possess is my love for the Lord and my heart to obey Him?
    9. What miracles might God want to do in my life that would show the whole earth that there is a God in the land?

Faith for David is an understatement here. He had *complete* confidence that Goliath was toast because of the Living God he had defied. From the text, defeat never so much as occurred to him, because the battle wasn’t his at all.

Thank you Pastor Fink and Holy land site Team, I enjoyed it. My Faith lifted, when you said, That David knew that it wasn't is the size of our weapon, but the size of our Faith in GOD that matters. He didn't look at the obstacle, he looked to GOD. And also when you implied, that Loving GOD is the Most Important weapon we can have, we can use, and it will Motivate us to have Faith, We'll be Motivated to Deepen ourselves, so that we'll do what GOD wants us to do. So right! Our Love for YHWH should be our Primary objective in life. When we Love GOD, we will TRUST Him and OBEY His Commands, that is why, Ancient Israel when into Slavery, because they were to Destroy the tribes that lived into the promised land (CANAAN) but didn't, and as a result, Worshiped the Canaanites gods. The book of Judges Illustrated that, Almost all of the Israelites were lovers of Self, and not YHWH. Shabbat Shalom

David the shepherd boy took down the giant block-head Goliath by the power of God. He was completely fearless and faithful, using skills meant for taking down wild beasts, to take down the biggest and dumbest one of all. Praise God!! I love this lesson pastor, you have honed the skills God has given you to bring excitement to the word of God. I especially love the part about developing our skills, and above all, our weapon/love for God really struck me. God bless you and your beautiful wife.

The Philistines were trying to give the impression their warriors were generally like Goliath rather than Goliath being an exception in their ranks, so as to scare Israelites into fleeing a fight. Notice how they paraded Goliath out front decked in armor and strong weapons to instill fear.
When a non military boy with no armor or sword beat this mighty fighting man, the philistine plan backfired big time.

I don't think either side intended to honor the terms of Goliath's challenge. After David killed Goliath, the Philistines did not surrender. Israel still had to defeat them in battle.

In analysing the locations of the event I think it would be better done with still images with appropriate superimposing text or graphic tools. If you zoom in to the various locations showing the two different camps, the topography, the stream location and the possible location of the encounter it would be more helpful to the viewers than with moving images as it is done now.

I learned from one of my church’s Bible Talk studies that Goliath most likely had a pituitary disease and had a tumor that pressed on his optic nerve. This would have affected his peripheral vision where he wouldn’t have been able to see David coming from the left or from the right. These type of giants had great physical stature but lacked speed and agility that David had. And having a guard stand next to Goliath with a shield most likely helped him out by telling him where the enemy was. David knew where to hit him to knock him down. Goliath basically fell to the ground unconscious but was still alive. It wasn’t until David decapitated him that he died.
This doesn’t eliminate the miracle in how God used David. But it shows that even some one who can appear as mighty and strong as Goliath can also have a physical weakness. So our enemy may seem like a terrifying unconquerable tower of strength, but that’s really a facade to cover their weakness. God can give us his strength to overcome Satan’s fiery facade so that he can fully use us for his holy and righteous will. We just need to fully trust in him and have faith that he is always with us.
    Isaiah 41:10 NIV
[10] So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

I am a Muslim ..... this fight between David and Goliath is mentioned in our holy Quran in the very second chapter.
You have to mention about the stream of water which separated them. Saul is refferred to as Talut in Quran, he was leading the battle. On the day of the battle it was very hot and Saul instructs them not to drink water from the stream, a few of them who drank the water lost faith in God and were terrified by the strength of Goliath. The Quran also mentions about the Ark of the covenant which was recovered by David.
This channel is too good. Keep up your good work.
Ur voice is very inspiring and melodious like that of David.
    God bless you..... Amen

Injeel was the book that was revealed to Jesus in Aramaic language which is close to Arabic.
Is ur Bible the same as the Aramaic Injeel that was revealed 2021 years ago ??
I hope you got the answer.
Quran has never changed and will never change. It was revealed in Arabic and will remain in Arabic forever.

I think from the description of David fighting lions and bears and trying on Saul's armor (it didn't say it didn't fit him) but not having tested it, shows me he was most likely over 17 to 20 years old, was strongly built, fast, skilled and smart, not as tall as his brother's but not a little 13 year old depicted in many pictures. In addition, he immediately became a General in the army. You had to be 20 to be in the army.

Septuagint manuscripts, all give it as "four cubits and a span" (6 feet 9 inches or 2.06 metres), whereas the Masoretic Text has "six cubits and a span" (9 feet 9 inches ... he was tall either way. but height doesnt mean anything, goliath was a veteran, experienced fighter. david wasnt he was just a farm boy who protected the sheep against wild animals. God gave David the victory

With all that said, David was an experience slinger. The sling was the pinnacle ranged weapon for most of mankind's existence, only being supplanted by the bow because of ease of use.
Expert slingers - such as David - could deliver more force on target than my 357, and reach out to 500m+!
