    Level-by-level informational videos for the recreational tennis player.
    In this video, watch a 4.0 male #tennis player demonstrate groundstrokes, volleys, overheads and serves. NTRP is a classification system that identifies and describes general characteristics of tennis-playing ability from 1.0 (beginner) to 7.0 (touring pro). Within each #NTRP level, tennis ability varies. Learn more at usta.com/NTRP.

    First off, with all due respect to this guy I'd put my money on the 3.5 in the other video. With that said, if these are true ratings than everyone in my area are tanking. The average 3.5's are far better and the 4.0's would win in lopsided blow-outs.

    • @DamianTran

      Even the 3.0 guy in the other video is better than this guy

    • @gregr999
      @gregr999 2 роки тому +4

      They very apparently matched up the wrong videos for 3.5 and 4.0 male players. This guy is 3.5 at best. Whereas the guy on the 3.5 video has 4.0 serves & groundstrokes that are 4.0 (or better)

    • @rsmith02
      @rsmith02 2 роки тому +2

      I just watched both and don't think so. The 3.5 guy has a good forehand but moonball backhand with a forehand grip, middling serve and weak volleys. This guy isn't entirely orthodox but the strokes are likely effective in play.

    Lol why did they pick this guy. I mean, he may very well be a 4.0 (since rating is about your ability to win), but his technique is far from normal.

    • @abujabi

      at the recreational level, the term "normal" is a very loose term

      Ok my question is if these ratings are about ability to win, why do these videos focus so much on form? There are players who do nothing but slice off of both sides without any body rotation, who win at 4.5.

      Ok, his technique is not "classic". Who's technique is in all aspects of thier game? Pro examples who won with interesting technique: Marion Bartolli, Ernest Gulbis, Jelena Ostapenko, Monica Seles, Fabrice Santoro.....the list can go on....so they made a good choice for the video. Everyone will not have classic technique, but yet are successful.

    What people need to understand is rating is the probability of winning match, not how beautiful your strokes look like.

    • @chuckfriebe843
      @chuckfriebe843 Рік тому

      @@khariscakes9330 I see where you’re going with that. However, those players you mentioned,while having some unorthodox strokes, are masters of all types of spins, are able to serve at a pace with competency and equality to their peers. A guy in a club setting that hacks his/her way to a win, although a win it is, does not have the skills to “master various types of spin and pace” or “have a serve with pace AND placement”. There are certain criteria that enable players to play at a pro level in spite of their weird looking strokes. If you took someone like Bartoli and put her on a court with Serena Williams, she’d stand there and watch Serena’s serve go by. UTR ratings are more about the probability of winning a match, based on a history of winning at a certain level. No NTRP evaluator is going to give someone a 5.0 rating if they can’t hit with various types of spin and pace that is consistent with others at that level. People on the internet that claim to be 4.5 or 5.0 or whatever, are fooling themselves or there is someone rating them that is a friend, likes them as a “nice person” and/or simply doesn’t know what they are doing.

  • @cldavis33
    @cldavis33 3 роки тому +9

    The biggest 'weird' component is his left side and arm are almost never really 'engaged'. Even after his serve toss, his lets his left side wither. FH and BH both start with the racket head DOWN all the way. Combined with the dead left side, it has a strange look. But if you can do it consistently and make the ball go over and land where you need it to consistently...you can be a 4,0

    WRONG video!!! The guy show here is NOT a 4.0 player. It appears that you have the wrong video posted for this. This player has groundstrokes and volleys that appeared to be 3.5 strokes. His serve looks to be between a 3.0 & 3.5 level. This video does not match the verbal description for this level
    OTOH, the guy shown on your 3.5 video looks MUCH better than this guy. The guy in that video has 4.0 serves and groundstrokes that could be 4.0 or higher. THE VIDEOS HAVE OBVIOUSLY BEEN SWAPPED. PLS CORRECT THIS OVERSIGHT

    • @rsmith02

      You need to watch more closely. Look at the 3.5's backhand scooping technique vs the compact swing here. Look at the volley grip and movement. Overall this is a stronger player even if some of the form is unorthodox.

    • @gregr999
      @gregr999 2 роки тому +2

      Nope, not convinced. I've coached players for 25+ years and it is quite apparent to my eye that someone at the USTA has mislabeled the 3.5 and 4.0 videos.
      The 4.0 guy (in the 3.5 video) has much better, more mature stroke mechanics than the 3.5 guy (in the 4.0 video)

    Fun video, nice ground strokes, looks like he has good conditioning . We can not see our racquet drop motion when we serve, that is why it is problematic . When he waves his arm like that he thinks he is doing a racquet drop behind his back. I did a video of my serve once and said "who is this guy, he is so slow and why is he doing a pancake serve"?

    I played High School Varsity Tennis and I was better than this. Don't get me wrong, the guy is good but his movements seems stiff and forced. My coach would always repeat "relaxed fluidity with power". That was our one goal. Form over everything. Background. I played table tennis for 3 years before playing tennis so that had a somewhat carried over for tactics and nerves but not technique and stance. That took repetition and repetition to become decent at.

      He has a compact backswing to get the overhead back deep and not miss too much. As the video says most players at this level overhit and miss. If you don't miss you become a stronger player even if your form limits you.
