It's interesting to hear about this bubble of wealth because I haven't experienced this personally.
On the other hand, and this is a major major thing: in the multiple Universities I've been to and attended, there was always and will always be *cultural bubbles*.
I personally call these "cliques" like the ones back in our highschool days. The point is, Spanish speakers will stick to Spaniards. The Chinese will stick to the Chinese only. British or Americans will stay with their countrymen and very rarely do we see hopping in and out of these cliques.
Unfortunately cliques are the way the world works; it doesn't matter if we are talking about primary school or university, a night club or congress.
It was definitely interesting to hear that even in a city as big as New York, students can get stuck in a bubble/clique mentality.
Dining hall food? The dining hall at Columbia is actually the best dining hall in the country!!!!

Listen let me tell you I went to Columbia about a million years ago and watching these videos brings back memories of my experience there. Columbia is unequivocally one of those schools that gives its students a superlative education. It’s also true, however, that the students and grad students teaching there are exceptionally keen on backstabbing their own mothers to get a straight A average. One time a premed student realized they were going to get a B+ in an English course and they tried to bribe the teacher into giving them an A by giving the teacher their ATM card with their PIN number and telling the teacher to withdraw as much as the teacher wanted. The teacher refused the bribe and that was one sorry premed student afterward!
Current student here. If you are a prospective student, best advice I can give is look elsewhere. Professors are arrogant and too busy to care about undergraduate students so they delegate to their TAs who are more concerned about the work they are doing and therefore act as an extension of the professor and the quality of the education you receive is simply not worth the amount they expect to pay. I attended community college for 2 years before transferring and my worst professors there, albeit less accomplished, were 10x better teachers than my best professor here. This school is a prime example of the largest issue facing the American university system: relying more on students forming connections with alumni rather than training and educating. Look elsewhere.

This is a very good video. Undergrad should watch before making a choice. It would be good if you can do similar videos from as many universities as possible it would go a long way in helping students to choose the right university for themselves. Keep up the good work.

I would say the most unhealthy reason and one that came up the most was students don't have a peer to peer relationship and no sense of belonging....it's just not right when you are living student life. For comedy's sake, its like Kungfu panda but everyone is tai lung.
The kids in this video seem pretty alright, but Columbia unfortunately attracts a lot of uptight, arrogant, often unfriendly status climbers who don't know how to have fun and, unfortunately, often don't even know how to be nice. There's also a lot of blind ambition which is not motivated by a desire to do good in the world or create something grand or even just for the pleasure of learning but is purely a quest for prestige (and money), which is why so many of its genuinely very bright graduates make a beeline for finance, law, management consulting, and other basically soulless 'high status' occupations as soon as they have their diploma in hand. And they follow this path because they don't know any other way of living except to be "at the top of the class" for the sake of being on top, without any social conscientiousness or even much idea of how to make themselves happy. It's the worst kind of overachieving.
Also, most Columbia undergrads seem to be oblivious to the fact that they're living in the greatest city in the world and its galaxy of cultural offerings and experiences. Most of them won't even go below 96th St except for their ArtHum field trip to the Met.
The quality of education is very good and you can find your group of people among the assholes but it might take you a while. Think hard about attending before you commit.

I am part of the School of General Studies and, although the the idea behind the program provides the community a lot more diversity and different perspectives, there is a very bureaucratic feel in which the different schools and departments stand apart. Barnard, GS, Columbia College, Engineering are all undergraduate schools with one community of students interacting on the same campus and taking most of the same courses. The idea is that there feels like a dynamic of administrative disinterest towards GS and could at least think about ways to truly integrate diversity into the community.
I am not sure about Engineering, but GS and CC have separate endowments. In turn we receive significantly less aid than CC does. And GS students are *generally* not from the same kind level of privilege as many CC students. It may not be as selective to get into GS, but I am confident that many of us provide invaluable insight via diverse experiences and circumstances. People find GS, GS does not find them. The image of the program feels influenced by that with a simple website and less awareness. General Studies as a name seems awful for its image however...
This point adds somewhat to Sabrina said because they could do a lot more to accommodate mental health.. I am not in a crisis or anything right now but I could use a real therapist and expected the school to be able to accommodate more frequent appointments than once per 3 weeks- month+. I was told the goal is to send to a more permanent one outside of CU eventually, but I don't want to wait extra months just to have to meet another therapist who doesn't know me personally. New York is a dreary place and people stress out like crazy and there is a kind of impersonality to the community as well. However the [aesthetically pleasing] campus is confined, yet accessible, in a way that does bring people together physically. These make mental health crucial though. The prompt sympathetic email from the school after a student commits suicide does not represent the concern/resources put into the Psych Services.
That is my opinion after being in 3 dif colleges before and I am holding Columbia to a higher standard than I would those schools, however those schools also had different dynamics and environments. I also didn't use the services there though, so I have no good take on how good it was.

@@nicko1657 I really cannot say since I never looked into those schools but I would assume the vibe is a lot different from Cali to NYC. I am 26 also and my life situation/personality and interests are probably very different from your own which makes it hard to compare say... UMaryland where I was at age 18-19, to Columbia from 24-26. But assuming that U Maryland is a lot more similar to the schools you mention in terms of size, environment, etc-you won't receive the quintessential college experience at Columbia in the same way you would at a big campus state university. I guess the urban setting makes that difficult but it is also cool especially for me since I have been down the "college experience" of being a freshman at State U.
Hmm that was probably not super helpful depending on what particularly you are wondering and I am kind of rambling lmao...
I like Columbia but I am not sure honestly how much of that comes with being proud of myself for ending up there and being able to live in NYC. Generally I am happy with my experience although I think I could have made it better if I personally operated differently/was in a better mental state. If you want info on academics, I would say the professors are predominately very dedicated to their classes and extremely accommodating. I have not turned in a paper for a week past the deadline on more than 1 occasion and the professor almost always reaches out and won't penalize me usually. One good thing is that the class size is small/smallish and a lot of the "core" classes are automatically 20 people or so at most so you do feel a lot more connected with those professors.
At the end of the day, whether you go to UC's or GS, you will have good opportunities if you take advantage of them. GS is a large % of the student body here and classes are almost always integrated so when you ask me to compare GS to those schools, it is effectively comparing Columbia as a whole.
I am sure lots of people have shade to throw at Columbia but there is no denying that it is a good school and I think the prestige and opportunities available to me are something I could not have other places.
ALSO I will admit I am not a hardcore student like scrambling to get all A's and get into Harvard med school or something crazy. I am pretty laid back and do my own thing. And I think because people in GS are generally more mature and experienced, I don't get that feeling that other people have about Ivies / elite schools where it's a cutthroat race and people want to succeed at all costs and study 72h a week etc (maybe perks of being a social science major though for me haha). You certainly have a lot of those people at Columbia, but I'd guess you have a lot less in GS. And I don't feel overwhelmed academically in that respect. With that being said, I do definitely have a LOT more work than I had at other schools. But sometimes I don't think the professors even expect us to read all 150 pages for their class in 2 days. And regardless, if its a social-science or humanities course, those 150 pages aren't going to have a fill-in-the-blank test but a paper where if you missed some stuff you can skim it later or just disregard it even. The access to all the scholarly papers assigned or suggested by professors and the knowledge produced when you think about them and analyze them is its own asset but I wouldn't always think of an assigned journal article as "totally necessary" as much as enlightening and intellectually stimulating [ideally] if you are here to get something out of it and not just get the degree or conform to some expectations that result in an A. Sorry for the rambling post but I had forgot I ever posted this and got carried away haha. If you have any specific concern maybe I can answer something else

columbia seems to be one of the least appealing ivies . doesn't seem to have a real campus feel. kinda has the look of a commuter school

When I was a freshman at Columbia College in 1981, I was scared and angry all the time. The transition from high school was really jarring. In high school I was always the smartest kid in class. I really stuck out. At Columbia I was just one kid in a crowd of hundreds. In high school there was nobody I needed to be afraid of. At Columbia everyone was terrifying. The ones I hated most were the big jocks with the big muscles, of course. But the punk rockers made me nervous too. And then there were the homosexuals. And the rich kids with the fancy suits and ties. Everyone I met on campus was different from me. Everyone scared the hell out of me. There was no place where I belonged, where I felt comfortable and safe. There was nobody to talk to about my problems.

Your GPA does not matter after you graduate. All that matters is what YOU can do. People kill themselves trying to get a 4.0 every semester and then end up at a job with people who have 2.8’s and 3.0’s. Your GPA only helps you in college that’s it.
NYU is more exciting
Both NYU and Columbia have their own unique appeal. I think going to a school in NYC is exciting in general. Have you checked out the NYU videos on this channel?

I think he was referring to the school itself, not the surrounding neighborhoods. I'm guessing demographics have made a noticeable impact in his campus and classroom experience.
