I'm so jealous, Huw! That was a gorgeous chunk of wood that I wish I had! LOL! So much nature, just think of what that wood had gone through before you got it. I don't know how you waited three years to turn it! Just beautiful! 😊
Phil
Thank you so much Phil.
I had to wait for Kevin to get a lathe big enough to turn it LOL.
I'm so pleased you like it Phil.
I would have sent it to you but for 2 reasons, USDA would probably impounded it because of the bark as they did with a smaller piece I sent to Luie and secondly I don't think I could have afforded the shipping. LOL.
Take care my friend and thanks for all your inspiration to even attempt this one.
Cheers, Huw
@@WoodenItBeNice No need to send it to me, turn that stuff, it's great! 😊

Absolutely fantastic piece, Huw! I agree, definitely one of your most beautiful bowls! Well done my friend!
Thanks so much Seth.
It was a tough turn but the end result is fantastic I think.
Take care my friend.
Cheers, Huw
That is absolutely gorgeous!
Well done sir! Phil would be proud!
Thanks Luie, I agree totally with you and hopefully Phil likes it as well.
Take care my friend.

Thank You Huw.... WONDERFUL watching you create this morning. .. I hope and am sure you saved those chain sawed pieces. Sooo much to see Huw on UA-cam it is so difficult to find the time and still take care of what I am required to do on the home front so sorry I have not visited you site more often BUT when I saw "BURL" I was locked in. Looking past the project to your shop makes me feel wonderful!!! I wish you had one of those bowl coring devices that saves the burl when turning the inside. Always hate seeing the loss of that burl turned into shavings but so goes life. Quite a wonderful turning this morning and a pleasure watching your process. Very well-done Huw!!!. ... TM
Good evening Tuffy, Thank you so much for such a wonderful comment.
The bits that were sawn off were indeed kept.
Please don't apologise for not watching or commenting on more of my videos, I know how difficult it is to keep up with all the videos we would like to watch but as you rightly say life does come first.
This one was actually turned in my good friend Kevin's workshop. I have known him nearly half my life and the piece would not fit on my lathe.
Kevin does have a coring device and we did discuss using it but if we had I would have had holes in the side of the bowl which I didn't want.
There is one inclusion that means the wall thickness is about 1/8".
I have to admit that the turning was a joint effort between Kevin and myself as at the time my back issues were still quite prominent and meant I couldn't do all the turning myself.
Fortunately for me over the last couple of weeks those issues have diminished greatly and I have ne been able to turn a few pens at least and am looking forward to getting back to bowls and other items soon, it has been a long time problem lasting nearly 3 years.
Once again Tuffy thank you so much for the support which I truly appreciate and also for the pieces you send Phil so he can entertain us all.
Take care my friend.
Cheers, Huw
@@WoodenItBeNice OK, Huw, thank you for your comment. OUTCH, bad back!!!!! That is exactly what I am going through right now, UGH!!! I am a couple years younger than Phil and I thought I needed to purchase myself a rowing machine to help with my physical everything, omg. My Lizard brain told me to start off sloooowly BUT my know-it-all brain sayed to just go for it!! This has been 2 weeks now with my bad back and my only defense is to lay on a small, inflated ball on my living room rug hoping that stubborn backbone will go back in place. This used to work in my 50's but now in my 70's it seems to take so much longer. OH WELL Huw again so goes life and I would never change exchange the bad with the not-so-bad because as Phil would say "It's all good" & I cannot argue with that😆..... TM
@@tuffymartinez Hope you get relief very soon Tuffy. My back issues are due to arthritis so I know I will have good periods and bad periods. It took the doctors 2 1/2 years to diagnose it and now I know I can deal with it.
Fabulous piece I’m glad I found your channel
Thank toy so much. This was a difficult turn but I live the end result.
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.

Chestnut is a beautiful wood and this Burl sure did inherit the beauty along with awesome character. Great turning job, also. Enjoyed thevideo.

Wow, that's a big hunk of wood all right; I can certainly understand why you'd be a wee bit nervous getting something like that started. But goodness, what a wonderful result. The finish suits it so well. Great job Huw, thanks for showing us.
Thank you Mark. Apart from everything else getting me a bit nervous it was too big to go on my lathe.
So happy with the end result.
Take care my friend and thanks for your constant support.

Wow What a stunning piece of wood Huw so much character Well done the 2 of you that thing would have demolished my little shed lol
Thanks Colin, It does have loads of character.
In its original size it was too big for my lathe which is why I waited until I was up with Kevin as he has a 20" capacity over my 16".
Take care my friend and thanks for all your support.

I think the blocks are going to hold it level when flipping it over and drilling a flat spot on the top. Now I watch....
Okay, at least you know I didn't cheat and scroll through the comments. There was some beautiful wood hiding under that bark, and you made it more beautiful. The eyes and inclusions are amazing! 😍
Thanks Ted, That was a consideration.
Hahaha, no you didn't.
It is beautiful wood for sure.
Thanks for watching and commenting Ted I really appreciate it.

Beautiful burl bowl. If you saved that 1st piece that your friend cut off with the chain saw, I have an experiment for you. Either sand smooth or even turn it to a small piece, then at some color dyes. Just dab on splotches of maybe 3 colors until the surface is covered. Allow to dry and apply finish. See what that does with those burl eyes. Should be fabulous. Great work Huw. Be safe my friend.
Thanks Doug, Great idea and yes those pieces came home with me.
Thanks for watching my friend and the idea.
Take care Doug.
Cheers, Huw
Your not wrong its defo a very lovely piece mate. Got to say I didn't guess what he had planned to flatten the bottom, I was thinking router sledge going down that road. Clever stuff for sure.
Take care mate
Kind regards
Conor
Thanks Conor, it id a beautiful piece of wood.
I honestly didn't have clue at that point what he was going to do.
It worked well though.
Take care mate.
Cheers, Huw
Looks like the off-cuts could also be usable. That was a really big chunk. The end result is amazing.
Thanks Myk, Yes I kept the offcuts.
It's the biggest piece I have turned and it would not have fitted on my lathe.
Take care mate.
Cheers, Huw
Fantastic work Huw. Might be hard to top that. Mind your back.
Hi Mike, I agree with you, this one will be difficult to top.
I'm trying to control the back but losing the fight at the moment.
It will ease of again just as before.
Take care mate.
Cheers, Huw
stunning piece Huw... is that one you'r going to keep? cheers mate take care
Thanks Grahame. No this one is for sale. I'm keeping the Oak one from last week.
Take care mate and safe journey home whenever that happens.
Cheers, Huw
router sled? ahh no a planer, good idea.
Blimey Huw just not aware of how much messing about it is to turn a burl, all that picking etc etc. by the way Phil looks like one very accomplished turner and large belt sander expert, ha ha.
Sweet looking bowl Huw, well done both of you.
Cheers
Steve
Nice guess Steve.
There really was a lot of messing about getting down to the wood itself.
Kevin is a very accomplished turner indeed and I don't think there is a power toll I would ever need that he doesn't have LOL.
Take care mate.
Cheers, Huw
Hi mate I'd give my right arm for a lovely piece of burr like that ....well not really otherwise I wouldn't be able to turn it but you know what I mean 😆Absolutely superb Huw ,well done mate
Cheers Bram
Hi Bram, I know what you mean. Fortunately the pieces I bought didn't cost me an arm and a leg. Me and Kevin bought a whole load of it between us and shared it out.
when you get back to turning, not if but when, let me know and I'll send you a small piece to play with.
Take care mate and I think I did a "Lovely Ol Job". LOL.
Cheers, Huw
@@WoodenItBeNice Wow mate that is very kind of you , I have made a start, albeit small, on cleaning the old shed up and hopefully start turning again autumn time .. And that was a lovely old job mate !! Take care mate , Bram
@@Bramsshed1913 My pleasure Bram. I've got some time to sort a piece out for you then. What is the diameter on your lathe 12"?
@@WoodenItBeNice Yes mate thanks
@@Bramsshed1913 Ok leave it with me.
I was sure you were going to us a plunge router to flatten it using the runners as rails for a larger baseplate... but that works as well 🙂
Thanks Ruben, I thought Kevin was going to get out the router as well as I've seen many people use one to flatten table tops and river tables.
That was was so quick, it literally took minutes to do.
Take care my friend and thanks for watching and commenting.
Take care Ruben.
Cheers, Huw
Aka Phil: Where’s the bark? 😜🤣 I think you turned it aka Valerie, not Phil! Glad the bark was loose and had to go. I much prefer beautiful swirly burr over bark any day. Excellent job of working with the burr to get a good final result. My favorite also!
Hi Valerie, Thank you so much.
AKA Valerie is fine by me. The bark literally fell off on places.
I'm over the moon with the end results and stand by me saying my best one yet.
Take care Valerie and thanks for commenting and watching.
Cheers, Huw
Except Phil Anderson would be glueing the bark back on instead of peeling it off 😊. Phil has ruined me for turning anything resembling a nice piece of wood. You did a great job on the piece 👌
Thanks James, The bark was falling off and was rotten.
Phil is an amazing turner and every week I think how does he do that?
Thanks for the compliment I really enjoyed this one.
Take care. James.
Cheers, Huw
I'm over the moon with what I see Huw - you must be in orbit around Jupiter !!! If you do part with it, get £500 at least. Or just send it to me. Take care my friend. -Mike
Thanks Mike, I'm so happy with the outcome.

I'll video the process and results, good or bad.
Should be fun as I don't really do colouring, but then again I didn't do turnings like this 18 months ago.
