One thing that wasn’t mentioned in the video, is that our financial system and education system is constructed in such a way as to ensure a portion of the population will be the ones employed to provide the services and another portion will be the consumers of services ie. judicial/criminal system requires criminals and people that can be convicted and jailed, as well social services requires people who are “disadvantaged “ and in “need”, so that those who choose those careers can have jobs, next the allopathic medical system requires endless customers to keep their doctors nurses and other people employed as well the pharmaceutical industry and related industries employ a large percentage of people therefore they require consumers of their products to keep the racket going. In many cases all these industries are interconnected and can utilize one individual at different stages of their life as a customer. It’s all just to keep the hamster wheel spinning, but none of it is based in reality.
I love how In-tuned she is to contemporary topics…I’ve been watching her for the last year…she reminds me of my childhood neighbor who was my first best friend who was also from Jamaica. I grew up in the inner city of NYC and have experienced so many unhealthy troubles growing up with no pops around…everybody was on sum Money stuff..this was the 1980’s. It never felt right and when I expressed this I was viewed as trouble or not getting with the program. As an adult, when I finally folded I lost my health to over work and burnout. My craving for mental spiritual correctness has brought me here. I so appreciate how Hurlock hits the target on things that I have thought about and wondered since a child but no one would listen to me about. Her videos confirm that I wasn’t crazy this whole time. Geez I wish I had the truths back then…it woulda saved me a lot of pain.
The final point about how we were raised is a huge part of how many of us relate to material things or a lack there of. For many, the trauma experienced is interpreted as lack because apart of it had to do with basic needs not being met at a young age. And our attempt to heal is by filling those material needs. Oh but when we go deeper, we can see that the trauma goes way beyond material lack. It’s always the trauma we experienced and some that were not our lived experience but passed down through epigenetics- we just gotta do the healing work. Then a Benz won’t mean anything whether it’s in your possession or not. You’ll be free❤
"I'm only valuable based on what I own". So many people are STILL stuck in this mindset in this day and age. Especially when I see Black people subscribing to the BS en masse. People chasing titles and money but end up being in the most toxic jobs and environments one can have and valuing that over peace of mind and throwing it around as if its a badge of honor. I value my health, peace, relationships, the necessities, good clean water, healthy food, the necessities. Wealthy people recognize whats important, they don't chase superficial things, poor, easily influenced people do.
It is not the Branding/Commercialism itself that program us to want those things...it is the entertainment we watch and listen to that program us to want those things. Every rap song the last 30+ years telling us these things make us somebody and we ain't **** if we don't have them. R-n-B love songs do the same thing, so does TV Shows and Movies with product placement. Listen to same songs 10x a day everyday for 30 years, idolizing Celebrities and want to be like them (Be entertainers and athletes)...and we subconsciously want these things/brands and don't even know why
This woman is a humanitarian treasure! Unfortunately many individuals choose to make greed their new religion and wrongly believe in money as a replacement for God!
"On your mark, get set, cop ‘em! Imagine a life that revolves around shoppin’ Conspicuous consumption That means it serves no other function But to show off to someone, or others Who only try to show off to you - look at your fellow loyal customers"- Lupe Fiasco
I have a question. What if I'm not striving for money for materials or brands...but for travel and exploration. Is that still materialistic ? Should I just stay where I am in the US and try to be grateful, or is it worth it to strive for money to see other countries and possibly less individualistic societies? Genuine question I dont wish to argue but have more understanding.
