Good for you for taking the first step and going outside your comfort zone, and who knows if you enter more tournaments, they may start to grow on you. As someone who is ranked 4th in the world, my best advice for anyone looking to get better, is to set their games at home like they would find them at a tournament. This means, no extra balls, tilt Bob installed and set relatively tight, etc… and then when you start to feel more comfortable with those settings, you can start messing with adjusting/removing posts, and adding lighting flippers. Great video as always!
Yea, not use to ball save being OFF. I was like what?!?
@@CaryHardy Playing for fun and competing in a tournament require completely different mindsets, especially when it comes to strategy. When playing for fun, the typical goal is to reach the wizard mode. In tournament play, achieving the highest score among your group is king. After playing in several tournaments, I now know the difference between the two and I enjoy both equally. I understand it may not be for everyone, but I'm glad you got to experience it. I encourage you to play some more tournaments if for no other reason than to meet new people and become part of that city/location's community. As we already know, the pinball community are all great people. I am pleasantly surprised to rub elbows with the best players in the world and they're all very humble, encouraging, inclusive and welcoming. Congrats on your trophy!
@@CaryHardy I’m playing my first tournament this Sunday. I had no idea they turned ball save off! Not sure what to expect but I’m looking forward to it.
Competed in my first tournament last month and won first place. Was all nerves the whole time, but thank God I came out on top. Got another tournament this Sunday and am gonna try to relax and just have fun regardless of how I perform.
Thanks for the quick video always enjoyable!! Definitely get that same vibe at tournaments as you do. Looking forward to your next video. Have a great Day!!
Glad you enjoyed!
Congrats Cary!! I started playing in 2019, played in about 3 dozen tournaments and *finally* won a trophy.. 1st Place B Division trophy at my last event. I've never even owned a machine so it's pretty obvious why it took so long hahaha
You brought up a good point. People that grew up with machines in their home have infinitely more of a chance than the rest of us. I didn't play until college, and was never any good because I didn't have money to even play.
Good job Cary. I'm not a huge tournament player but it's fun to get out and meet people and just enjoy the experience. I also like to enjoy the adult beverages while playing, it adds a certain "factor" to it all, lol
A lot of nice vectors there. I would have tapped out early just to play the vids.
Some seriously awesome games there!!
Good for you! Glad you represented us Texans so well! Though, I guess most competitors were Texans……but the sex metaphors….lol
Great video, I like your style of presenting
Thanks for noticing!
I haven't played in a tournament yet but I think I'd feel the same as you. I'd definitely like to try one in the future, but ultimately I just enjoy drinking a beer and relaxing while playing.
Playing competitive pinball is the same as any other solo competition. The most important thing is to remember that you are ONLY competing against yourself. If you’ve improved since last time you ARE winning!
Getting your ass handed to you is an excellent way to build character. It’s important and it’s good for you.
I hope you realise I'm now hearing Donkey Kong music when working on my games because of you...😃
Look what showed up on my suggested videos page! 🤣 As I said at the tournament, it was fun beating you in the loser's (errrrrrr...I mean Division C) bracket. 🥇🤡 You didn't do bad at all for your 1st tournament. I personally go to these local tournaments for the social aspect and to play pins I've never touched before. I don't have $100,000's to spend on pinball machines like some of these guys, so I just go to their houses/barns to play theirs! 🤑
But thank you for your how-to videos (please do more!). I picked up my 1st pinball machine on Weds. and got it all set up by myself thanks to yours and others videos. 🤗 Since I won't see you at anymore local tournaments, I hope to randomly run into you at TPF! 👋
Everything ends up sexual here..
'draining my last ball because they were all waiting for me to finish'
Tsss..
Nice work bro! I got 2nd in c division at pinburgh in 2016, won $1250 plus hardware =)
Tourneys can definitely be hard on you.. I very rarely play my best pinball in a tournament but I always have a good tome.time.. Tha ks for sharing your thoughts as a forst time tournament player.. But I have to say 1 tournament and 1 trophy ain't bad at all!
Congratulations! Wish I could do the same…
Pinball for you is something you want to unwind with, not really have the pressure come back on.
You just have to get over tournament fright (for those that haven't done it). They are fun if you aren't worried about looking like you suck. Different styles can be more fun. HERB style is a little more fun than head 2 head. You just play and try to get your best score on a handful of machines.
Tourney saavy now, young man??
not savvy, but I got experience now...
Hi Todd!
The Iron Maiden topper!!
Thanks. My friend made that for me, using photos we took from concerts we've been to together. That's a picture of use at the barrier. We were the first ones there.
Love the metaphors….
Cary Hardy did you hear that tomorrow stern pinball will show the new james bond 007 pinball machine
lol, yes. I'm well aware.
Look forward to your take on James Bond. I'm not impressed with the art package I've seen. on Pinside so far.
I enjoy tournaments…too bad I suck at pinball
Did the trophy say "Biggest Tool Shed"?
No, it clearly states something else on the video thumbnail and in the beginning of the video...weird question.
“I like my pinball like I like my sex” and “ding my dong”… you getting enough lately?!? Of either cause now you’re in tourneys.
Let’s bring them together and make that David Bowie Labrynth with ding my dong captive ball cod piece
I'm a very sexual person...
