That was actually very VERY inspiring. I can tell you put quite a bit of thought into that. I kinda needed that... as I've been hitting a wall with my content lately... and perhaps this is why....
I’m 15 and my dad has been giving very similar advice to that which you gave at the end, but he never wrapped it up in a nice little bow like you did. I’m kind of blown away that you’ve wrapped up some scattered thoughts that I’ve been thinking. It’s very helpful not just for filming, but also interacting with people every day. It’s always good to consider that people have their own life. And now you’ve gotten me thinking. Here’s another way to look at it. Talking to anybody is like talking to someone who’s an expert in their craft. If I’ve never fished before, then I don’t know anything about how an expert fisherman fishes. Everyone is an expert at their own life. And though everyone else doesn’t know much about it, it’s important to realize that just living day to day is kind of like rocket science. There’s a lot to know and the science is different for each person. I hope that’s easy enough to understand. I love the video. :)
Thoughtful and a totally adequate analysis Mumbo. That's why I liked your mini documentary with Otter, it had a story as well as a super nice photo. As goes for the films you did with Creative North. I loved them.
Mumbo, i think this is your best vlog video yet. A film/video without a set story and emotion doesn't leave the audience touched by what they have just watched. If someone is making a movie with all the fancy film gear and equipment, but they don't have a unique and solid story, no one will leave that video satisfied. You can blow someone away with just a simple camera, and a solid story filled with the right emotion and tone. That is why i like watching you mumbo, you are a great amazing film producer. You are one of the very first youtubers who got me stuck into more advanced film. Keep the good work up!
I have been thinking about this ever since I saw it. I think the way to put it is the difference between commentary and narrative. Your earlier films reflect your history as Minecraft's Mumbo, making videos and commentating. So naturally when you started with film it was much the same, hence "now I'm going to take some drone footage", etc. Great for one mode, not for another, and it takes a while to learn when to change form. You are rocketting along and producing some genuinely beautiful films that have a narrative flow. Keep at it.
Thank you so so so so so much for making this video. I'm studying Moving Image Arts at A Level, and our exam board cares NOTHING for story... A bunch of nice visuals in your film, is literally all you need to do to make a full mark movie... But having a more emotionally deep and investing story won't help you... And because how you tell that good story is one of the hardest parts of filmmaking, I really think that should be a bigger focus for film studies in school...
This is amazing You really know how to connect with people Playing Minecraft is another aspect of your life but while film making you are a whole new guy While playing you might be a big spoon but when it comes to filmmaking you really connect to it That's why I like you Mumbo You have inspired a lot of guys out there I gave up on photography about 2 years ago after my camera broke but after I came across your channel I just thought to my self why just give up Now I still don't have a camera but I try to take the best shots that I could get from my Redmi Note 4 Thank you Mumbo
Great way of simply explaining a complex concept! I love your examples of “what not to do” because it’s so easy to do them by accident. Just because something has a beginning, middle, and end doesn’t mean it’s a good story.
Man... Thanks for this, Oli. You’ve shown us the key to unlock the truest, most passionate experience of filmmaking. Inspiration comes from both the receiving and the receiver... So thank you once again for your genuine advice.
This video gave me goosebumps, I really love your way of filming and describing things! Me myself are very interested in film, it's very often that I watch a movie and instead of enjoying it like others I watch the camerawork and the post work like CC and the edits. I don't really know how to explain but I really like your look of films!
Only you can make a helpful video about filmmaking and attach something to it so it is emotioal... and this is why I love videos like that :) Thanks for doing projekts like this Mumbo
Awesome video as always! Your videos continually blow me away. I feel like story is one of those things you start thinking about and keep expanding on over time. I'm going to have to start paying attention for this now. Can't wait to see what you do next! Thanks Mumbo!!! :D
Wow, you've seriously inspired me to take up a bit of photography mumbo. Now everywhere I go I look like a fool, crouching down and lying on my face to take a picture of a cool twig, and I love it. You rock!
I find this video really beautiful, well made and touching. If everybody realized this to themselves, the world would be a lot better place for everybody. I just want to say, keep creating more content like this!!
hey Mumbo, you amaze me in what you do and you have inspired me to take photography in school so i can be just like you. keep up the great content and please do these videos more but anyway im giving this one a big thumbs up!!! have a great day. :)
I guess that's why I haven't felt the same way about your newer videos on this channel. They lack your personal touch, your opinion, but most importantly your spontaneity. I loved laughing with you, being worried with you when your gimbal got headbumped and all. I was never able to pinpoint why, but I hope you'll be able to improve upon yourself and be proud of your videos even at the end of the year.
When inspiration meets creativity and a passion, infinite possibilities reveal themselves. With your passion and expertise mumbo, you connect your audiences with your stunning, creative, story-telling footage. Hats off to you!
I swear I though that an ad for a film was playing in the beginning.. This is actually amazing, it's beautifully shot, and the actual content is quite interesting, I wouldn't mind a sort of series on the aspects of film making.
Absolutely brilliant. Everything you say is so deep, and has so much meaning. Keep up the good work Mumbo!!! And thank you for always doing your best to please us!!
I’ve been watching a lot of how to UA-cam videos but you mumbo put it the best way, you’ve captured a story within a tutorial which has made it not feel like a tutorial at all. This message is going to get to a lot more people this way and I thank you for putting the time and effort to not just make the video but but depth into.
The last few weeks have been rough for a lot of youtubers and this video was really inspiring. Mumbo, I really do mean this, your incredibly influential to a lot of people who watch your videos, and can help them in so many ways. You always thank us, but maybe it’s time for us to thank you as well.
Great video with a very good message! I didn't realize how much a story can help a video, I thought it was just point and shoot for cinematic stuff. The story helps SOOO much! This could actually be applied to other areas of life, too.
when you do a redstone tutorial it is like telling the story or the redstone, this video had a similar feel and that works. keep trying new things and learning more, I just got my first DLSR camera and am trying to learn to use it, funny as I stared watching you trying to learn redstone and now I am inspired to learn more of photography as well, never stop learning is what I try to live by
This has been my struggle for a long time and actually still is. Since I know the proper film and edit techniques I can say I can deliver a good quality video, but the storytelling part makes it hard for me everytime. I want to start a second channel, but I've no clue about what stories I want to tell. Ofcourse I can just start by uploading random content, but if I'm going for it, I want it to be good. Do you have a certain type of storytelling technique you keep in mind during the making of your videos? Are you looking for issues to fix or are you just making sure it has a beginning, middle and ending part? Keep up the good work!
“Jump off a rock, or buy a supercar” Nail on the head right there. I was thinking about this exact thing the other day. With the availability of cheap, quality equipment means that almost anyone can make a beautiful image. But are there necessarily more great short stories and short films being made? Probably not.
Also, I want to be a writer. And when you said that story telling was hard. Many people agree with that, and I love that you expressed your feelings on this.
You have so much skill in film making, it’s incredible! All of your vlogs are just straight up masterpieces on their own! I wish this channel had at least as much subscribers as your gaming channel because I think you can really go places with the skills you have! Please never stop following this passion of yours, you have serious potential to go big with this!
2 sec in the video and already amazing video work, mumbo you have out done yourself again, but i have a idea that might improve a bit, a better mic so u dont have ANY background sound and it will only focus on your voice so its more clear then it already is idk how this will work or anything but yeah i just thought of this, have a good day :D (sorry for broken english)(owh yah and it might also make your voice softer and deeper and i prefer that)
That's what I love to capture. I've always had that in mind: The people's lives that they live, the stories that life is composed of, the mini-hero's journeys that grow a person to their best self. I'm a writer, and I want to write stories that matter. Thank you, Mumbo. You've created something special- no more than that. Sentimental, here.
The footage was beautiful! Love the softness in the colors. I also kept thinking throughout how funny it was that your video on telling a story and how you struggle with it had such a great story!
I’m an aspiring storyteller myself, and there are just days when I find myself at a stop. Indeed, as you’ve said in this video, making a story is hard. Looking and taking inspiration from other people’s stories is indeed very helpful in crafting your own stories, and what I like to do is to take inspiration from some very interesting stories I’ve heard about others, and incorporate it into my own to create a story that would make even a fictional story feel real.
That was very well done. It has helped me think more about what I want to do as a streamer and video maker. Mumbo you are an inspiration. Keep doing what you are doing and be as great as you are just by being yourself. Your great man. Thanks.
I was an art major in school and this isn't only true when creating content for something like You Tube. The best art has story, and as such being able to convey this in any way is what really makes or breaks anything you can create. This way really well said and can help to improve everything we do as humans.
This kinda makes me want to start a filming channel or something because this is inspiring! I will try Oli And also I have watched every single video on both of your channels

I never quite realized that impressing your friends with shots does not mean they understand anything you're trying to tell them. Overall, this has given me hope to start again and rethink my films. Mumbo Jumbo why I'm subscribed to you is because, like you said your like a source of inspiration. You are a clean channel, and your always so positive. You make your videos to inspire people (not just for the views), and your actually a good vloger who doesn't do crazy things for views. Continue to do great things Mumbo.
You're great at filming! Keep going! I have an idea that you might like: each year you could work on a relatively long documentary (or showcase) through the year and upload it to the vlog channel. 👍 Just a suggestion😉 By the way, I love the slow-mo in this film -it works so well with the speech 😉
That was actually very VERY inspiring. I can tell you put quite a bit of thought into that.
I kinda needed that... as I've been hitting a wall with my content lately... and perhaps this is why....
Thank you very much! Everyone hits creative blocks occasionally, just keep working through!
Mumbo Vlogs I know where you filmed that ;D great video btw, i am now truely inspired 😊

WOW, Mumbo. This was truly amazing both visually and story wise. Absolutely stunning. I never get tired of seeing these videos!
And then UA-cam says: “not suitable for advertisers“
Not a joke. Literally.
this is to fucking good is like an high budget documentary
Haha, thank you :)
Agreed
I just discovered this channel of yours, and after watching this video I can't stop watching more of your content, bravo!
He also has a minecraft channel, Mumbo Jumbo :)

Playing Minecraft is another aspect of your life but while film making you are a whole new guy

You have inspired a lot of guys out there
I gave up on photography about 2 years ago after my camera broke but after I came across your channel I just thought to my self why just give up
Now I still don't have a camera but I try to take the best shots that I could get from my Redmi Note 4
Thank you Mumbo
I'm super pleased that you're getting back into it! Keep at it, you won't regret it! :)
Mumbo Vlogs 😃

Do it! Some of the poses I get into are absolutely ridiculous! haha!
I find this video really beautiful, well made and touching. If everybody realized this to themselves, the world would be a lot better place for everybody. I just want to say, keep creating more content like this!!

Amazing! You are so wise. This made my day :) Can't wait to see another video!
Why are you literally the best at everything? Photography, redstone, videos, building (sorta), etc.
Hahaha, thank you! I'm not quite sure I am the best but I give everything a go to the best of my ability. I agree with the "sorta" on the building! :)
Absolutely Brilliant 🔥 Speaks a lot about what people really want to do but never seem to do it and I love that you've shed some light onto it

I completely agree, and it's definitely something that I will be working on! :)
Mumbo I really like this new kind of style. Been here since 700k
I've been here since 4K!

As always a brilliant video. Keep up the good work mumbo! :)
Awesome video mumbo! The quality just blew me away!
This guy is epic.. I don't have words to describe my feelings about his videos. 🙂 Keep up good work 😉

This was brilliant Mumbo. Such high quality. Truly beautiful!
When I saw the beginning of the video I was about to hit "skip ad"! It looked that professional!! Loved it Mumbo!!
Hahaha, thank you :)
You are incredibly self-aware and that is what gives your content that extra something that is so often missing from other channels.
Wow. Possibly best video on UA-cam.
Hmmm, I don't know.. But thank you! XD
Mumbo Vlogs I’m certain it is.

Good job dude! looks really neat. greetings from The Netherlands.
"everyone is the hero of their own story, fighting their own battles" ...
I love this video as it is so complex but you explained it so well
Thank you :)
I’m an aspiring storyteller myself, and there are just days when I find myself at a stop. Indeed, as you’ve said in this video, making a story is hard.

That was very well done. It has helped me think more about what I want to do as a streamer and video maker. Mumbo you are an inspiration. Keep doing what you are doing and be as great as you are just by being yourself. Your great man. Thanks.
Thank you for the kind words!
So, everything he advised, is something that the Star Wars team needs to see! Amazing video.
Haha, thank you :)
I was an art major in school and this isn't only true when creating content for something like You Tube. This kinda makes me want to start a filming channel or something because this is inspiring!

I'm a filmmaker and I love trying to make picture-perfect shots as best as I can, but watching this video has really put emphasis on the story of the movie.
I never quite realized that impressing your friends with shots does not mean they understand anything you're trying to tell them.
Overall, this has given me hope to start again and rethink my films. Thanks Mumbo!
Awsome vid
That thing with every individual person has a story is still quite mind blowing every time I think about it...
Yeah, blows my mind too. For some reason it's something that I hardly pay attention to.
Mumbo, you sayd that really good! Im almost crying!
Haha, thank you :)
I love this sort of video, so meaningful 😊
Mumbo, just when I thought your vlogs couldn't get any better, you proved me wrong. Great Video!
I Feel Like Mumbo is the dad of film makers *keep it up love ur shots * ❤
You're becoming a real inspiration for me! Keep up the good work man ;)
That makes me super pleased! I'm glad you are enjoying them. Thank you :)

You're great at filming! Keep going! I have an idea that you might like: each year you could work on a relatively long documentary (or showcase) through the year and upload it to the vlog channel. 👍 Just a suggestion😉
By the way, I love the slow-mo in this film -it works so well with the speech 😉
