For fifty years doctors have said nothing more to me than "I don't know", or "Here, take these tranquilizers." Finally, after all these years, I have an explanation and a treatment that actually works!!! It's a bummer that it took me until age 75 to find out, but better late than never. Thank you guys. You gave me my life back.

It was hard to breathe, I freaked myself out! I’m 18 as well, so the odds of something serious were slim. Worst part about this is.. Some Dr's are so careless, if your chart/records say you have anxiety issues or any other mania's. They'll often refuse to check, and tell you it's just 'worry' pains.. No dr I've seen about my pains and aches have ever mentioned this costochondritis at all, they just tell me it's anxiety pains. Which also messes with your mind, because if they convince us enough that all pains are just that, what happens if something serious happens, and we pass it off as 'anxiety'.. I think mine is this because I never get 'heart' pains. mines usually indigestion, being anxious, or ribcage/muscle cramps but still

Dear Bob and Brad - hi guys. Blown away by your video - so appreciate you getting the idea out there that costochondritis is essentially a straightforward mechanical problem, where freeing up the tight rib machinery around the back takes the load off the straining rib joints on the sternum. It's basically a PT problem, not a medical one.
I've been back over all the published research on costochondritis for a paper for the BMJ. The only reason anyone thinks costochondritis is an inflammation at all is because the word started being used for the problem in the 1960s, for no reason whatsoever that we can find, and the '-itis' ending means 'inflammation'. And it's been treated incorrectly ever since.
I've done a UA-cam video briefly covering the actual published medical research on costochondritis - it completely supports what you've just said. Link is ua-cam.com/video/t8k2LCLeR24/v-deo.html
So much appreciate your videos - so much practical help for people that you're getting out there. The offer to come to New Zealand and drink beer is still open. Very best wishes, Steve August.

Could I ask you a question? 😊 My dad gets this (I do too), but he is able to get rid of his by curling/hunching his shoulders & head forward as much as possible, then taking a huge, deep breath in, and the rib pops back into place. Have you ever heard of this working for anyone else?
      Thanks for the information!

@@sheelfjohnson Not sure if this will help, but I use the backpod to get rid of 70% of the pain.... but to go all the way, I need to also do two stretches. The first one is turning my upper body (torso) at a ninety-degree angle. The second one is similar to what your dad does - but I grab a railing and then I hunch forward as much as possible to stretch my back.
You can see a video of these two stretches (ua-cam.com/video/qJRq7vzwu-A/v-deo.html&lc=z222upyrdr2pwz1nkacdp431yin1x2scmsxfrqczwmxw03c010c.1581882055357414)

I have it too. I seen Steve's video on it first late in 2017 when I was diagnosed with it. I tried everything from resting and not going to the gym as advised as I was told it would make it worse. I took a desk job to whilst not going to the gym and my god did it get worse. At the time I had the back pod and would stretch with it every day and whilst refraining from the gym and my normal active lifestyle. The lump got significantly worse and it was like half a golf ball on my rib cage and sitting correct at my desk would hurt my chest and if I leaned forward it would fix my chest pain but hurt my back. I decided to stay away from prescribed Naproxen as those cannot be good for the stomach lining, especially taking it for a condition that could be years long. So one day I just decided to leave my job, take some time off work and eat healthy again go to the gym 6 days a week and in 3months I lost 30 lbs and there was no visible lump or pain I had. I did abs 4 days a week and stretched over the back pod on top of this. Now I can maintain it just while going the gym and eating healthy but obviously take breaks when I feel and it's not an issue. I am glad I personally ignored the advice to rest as it's the only way I resolved mine, maybe it's different for different people but that's just my personal experience I wanted to share on such an obscure condition or so it seems

I have this every so often, sometimes it feels like a chest cramp, and I can't breathe until it passes. Or just pressing on my ribs hurts. I got a heart ultrasound that lasted over 30 minutes of pressing on my chest, boy was that painful for days! (Nothing significant was found) Later I had a bile duct ultrasound, and when he'd press on my ribs it was very painful. I have strange chest pains every so often, sometimes once a year it feels like someone hit me in the chest, but on the right side, so I figure it'll go away. It does. Some cultures think having a fan on you can cause pain, and sometimes I wonder if that's a factor. We've lived in places where you have to have the fan, even with AC, sometimes even damp clothes, to sleep.

Yes. :( I am 30 with costochondritis and have has many days when I wake up unable to move because just breathing is excruciating (and I get dizzy- I think from perhaps not breathing as sleeping, because of pain). It's very scary. I started to sleep with a wedge so I'm mostly upright and it's helped with that. Also trying to be good about my pt-recommended stretches. When I feel it flaring up I try to take aspirin (though not recommended with respiratory problems.)

    • @L.Spencer

@@mikestarkly9226 How is the wedge used, like between the knees or perhaps , wait I just remembered I had one and they can be used under the legs or the torso when lying on the back. Is that how you use it? I sleep on my back but also on both sides, and I find my shoulder likes to flop forward so I use thick pillows to try to straighten myself out. Like a body pillow.
By the way, I'm sorry to hear you have costochondritis, it sure can be painful!

One other thing that may work is to back up to the sharp corner of a doorway or wall and see if you can find the sore spot and gently press and move a bit to put pressure on that area. I have used this method a lot. Although I think the tennis ball may work better and will try that. One other method that I have had success with is to lay on your back on the floor and cross each arm downwards and towards the opposite side of your body and cup the shoulders forward, pull up your knees and rock them together as far over towards the floor as possible. This will cause you to rock your entire body and cause the area along your upper spine to be pushed a little outwards so it actually touches the floor. The sore area is then gently massaged as you rock. Feels relaxing and works well.
