I agree 100%. Just a note. My wife and I went bass fishing Tue. 7/23/24. Got up early, told my wife it was calm all night with a full moon. Our chances of catching was slim at most. She understood but here we go anyway. Well, I was right. No strikes, few fish feeding and it looked like what I thought. I told her these fish would be out deep. I was right on that but no hits. At 8:25 am I thought I was hung up on a lily pad in 12 foot of water when my line started moving. I caught this huge 10 pounder and boy was she beautiful. We took a couple pictures and let her swim off. I had her hooked right at the edge of her mouth. She wasn't hurt at all. That is very important to me. It was so beautiful to see her swim off the way she did. Full moon, July, calm water, go figure!!!!!!!!!!!

I just watched about 5 minutes of the Toledo Bend tournement on TV. Yep, all it was was the dudes standing there watching their screen. This crap has gotten out of control. I remember the days of the early Bassmasters TV shows, we watched you, Hank, Guido, Larry......etc, throwing jigs and spinnerbaits at laydowns and busting big fish....but not watching a screen. You boys showed us "real" techniques. That was something I'd watch again today but as of now and the FFS days, I am done watching bass on TV. Keep it up Randy.
I am in complete agreement with you, Chris. As a kid/young man, I use to really look forward to watching The Bassmasters, Hank Parker, Bill Dance, et. al.

Along that train of thought, I am in a couple FB fishing groups, and I’ve never seen so many questions that reflect a profound lack of fishing and boating knowledge, and these guys are running 20 or 21’ boats with 300HP motors. Pretty unbelievable.

I just ripped out my FFS, guys!!! I’ve installed in its place a sun dial and a weather rock. The sundial shows seasonal patterns and sun angles, like Randy talks about. When the weather rock gets wet on top, I know it’s raining so I quickly change tactics.

Man lakes cycle. My home lake was so good with crappie this year that everyone limited out for months January, February, March in to April. Didn’t need a live scope. It usually good but it was phenomenal and could be down for a couple years. But another lake or two will be on fire and it’ll give that one a rest. Fishing reproduce at an ungodly rate.

I was at iCast a couple weeks ago and it's easy to understand why these companies have as much leverage as they do just based on the footprint of their booths. My video on my channel last week, granted I'm in the catfishing niche, showed a lot of opposition to the technology in our tournament world scene. I remember early 2000’s when aqua view came out and I went ice fishing. I was amazed how so many fish sucked your bait inn and immediately spit it back out and swam off without moving your rod tip. I limited out that day by settting the hook as soon as they took a taste. I quit ice fishing but that was a game changer. We used to use an old flasher over the side of the boat right before ice formed and would kill crappie and gills before all the ice fisherman got out there! Technology definitely impacts the harvest rates of fish!
This is the equivalent of hunting with a drone. Imagine having to employ the help of advanced electronics to outsmart a fish.

I agree with you 100% on this Randy . The art of Angling Knowledge, Skill and Intuition is coming to an end and it saddens me. A big part of the experience for me is the mystery and figuring it out with knowledge and skill. I feel you cant put a price tag on the sense of accomplishment one feels when they figure it out and this new tech is robbing future anglers of ever experiencing that.
I liked watching bass tournaments because the pros used amazing techniques to catch fish and you could learn from it. With tournaments letting them use this tech you can’t learn from it and it’s not fun to watch anymore. I remember when nascar was getting dominated by rich people bc they was dumping money into cars then nascar put rules in place to help it be more competitive.

I dont know about you guys but the main reason i even go fishing is to feel that "tick" on the drop. Its like a drug. Seeing that live on screen is appalling to me. Fishing is gone. We need to do something about this.
Here are a couple of thoughts about the various topics you hit on concerning bass fishing future.
1. Technology limits are going to have to be reined in by government (state and local) action.
2. Need to have more catch-weigh-and release tourneys to preserve healthy bass populations.
a. Place slot limits. Example - Harris Chain of Lakes, 1 bass over 20 inches on boat. No bass on boat between 14-20 inches.
or b. Limit 1 fish in the live well. (Local or state GFW could impose these rules.)

Fishing is and always will be about getting to the water, checking out the weather conditions, water clarity and simply what you feel might work. That’s why it’s called “fishing” right? I’m a 62 year old who doesn’t get to fish as much as I’d like to but I’m sure not going to rely on a cheater box to catch any fish! Anyone can look at a video and pac man a fish down, no skill! Just my opinion. Tight lines sir. Would really like to fish with you some day before it’s too late. Keep up the good content and may God bless you and yours.

This is getting completely ridiculous. Seriously, on a fishing rod. I can't imagine what the 30+ year tournament anglers are feeling right now. All that time on the water learning patterns and techniques mean nothing anymore. How pathetic is that! I'm one of those guys, and I don't even want to fish the club tourneys because the new guys are using this technology. It's insane.
Our spring and winter time series is absolutely dead on my local lakes. Heck even bfl participation is tanking. I’m only 35 but it’s just getting to the point that I don’t give a shit anymore lol. I’m not alone either
Next step is increasing sonar distance until it covers a majority of the lake. Be able to see entire sections of the lake . . . It’s in the works… hotspotting
FFS just shits all over the magic that got me hooked on bass fishing at 6 years old. That pond could hold anything, there could be a world record out there who knows? Well now a bunch of suckers with deep pockets know, and the magic feels like it’s gone.

I'll say it again, it won't be long before fishermen will be wearing headsets. FFS will not be lined up by the rod, it will be lined up by where you look. It will get to the point where everything will be in 3d and each fish will be seen by species, size and who knows what else.
Yep. Goggles, 3d imagery, fish id, ai integration with every unit on the lake, throw in a little computational ethology, sprinkled with gesture recognition... You could easily build a multi agent system linked with mapping and using time series analysis, underwater terrain classification, etc. With observation learning behavior model for both angler and fish- a multi agent system linked to mapping and communicating with other units on the water will know when, where, how fish are being caught. Exactly. Just another tool right? Wrong. This is literally the end of fishing.
They are working on long range live sonar that will show in 3 D 'drain the lake' image on the screen. Now, you can mark a waypoint on a school of fish some 100 yards away and just troll over to them and 'have at it'!

We dont use electronics. We do alright. But I found out these guys that are getting huge bass where we go are using live scope. And they keep the fish. I'm sick of hearing about them at the tackle store. And they act like we are behind the times. I can get them on my own, thank you very much. It took a few years to learn what we know and Bill Dance in the 90s helped us out.

Agree with it all Randy. To me one of the best part of fishing is the “surprise” feeling you get when a fish strikes. Your senses become astute and a bomb could go off next to you and you probably wouldn’t hear it 😊. It’s the unexpected that’s fun.
With the technology you mention, that factor is gone. They see and expect that fish to hit. The surprise element is gone. No thanks. If I wanted that, I’d play a video game.

This rod technology is amazing, strictly from a technology standpoint it’s amazing what they are doing. How far advanced is our military if bassboats have this technology?
I don’t own any FFS or 360 tech. I do like sidescan and down scan for its clarity in finding structure but that’s as far as I’ll go. I will be buying the latest trolling motor soon, I need spot lock in a bad way

Great tech in my opinion. Must of us already turn the transducer in the direction of the cast. Usually we cast in the direction the transducer if we see fish.
This isn’t tech I would be interested in but I’m sure some jump on it.
I don’t think this will go anywhere. Adds bulk and weight to your rod. No one is going to want that.

Yup, last Thursday I caught fou small mouth, and one big redbreast sunfish in about an hour.
Pretty sure Ben Milliken just purchased a 19' Livescope screen...it has a 250 HP Merc, power poles, 10 transducers, 4 electro zappers to stun fish, 3 trolling motors, and 3 big nets underneath to scoop up any bass that get electro-shocked.....For the July sale, it's only $379,000...pretty good deal....if u want livescope goggles & a headset, it will run u $388,000...still reasonable

I’m 65 and remember my grandfather talking about telephoning fish. Apparently the early hand crank phones had a dyno that generated enough current to shock fish up to the surface. Then outlaws netted the biggest bass and sac a lait. FFS same thing.
There are so many technologies involved in fishing today that I have lost count. From the lures, rods, reels, line, boats and motors, trolling motor spot lock, power poles. It goes on and on, and now FFS and it’s combined accessories. We will always find a way to get an extra edge on our prey. Back in the early 70’s when we were crappie fishing we would follow a school of them after we would tie a ballon and line to one that we had caught and released. Wherever that balloon went we’d follow it. We had no shame and we’d rape the lake by taking hundreds of fish. Back then no limits. We’re moving forward with technology and its potential for abuse is unstoppable

Only problem I see with that contraption is when you go to set the hook, the transducer will swing around real fast and get off target. Maybe they have a work around for that though. Other than that, I'd like to pair it up with one of the two LVS34 systems I have on my boat. 😃
Randy, unfortunately, the electronic companies will never be stopped, they bring way too much money to the tournament organizers and the top fishermen who use them. They need to start a tournament circuit than bans electronics or just allows a one simple model that every fisherman has to use if they want to use electronics. The tournament should also ban fishing during the spawn or at least use the kayak tournament model where they measure and photograph their catch, upload the photos, and then release the fish where caught. A couple of these type of rules would go a long way. Keep up the good fight Randy, there are lot more fishermen that believe like you do about restoring honor and respectability to the tournament system.

The sad part about all this Randy is that now so many fisheries are severely depleted, it's gonna take many years for them to recover. Now that fact will hurt the sport more than anything, cause people like my little 7 year old daughter and my 9 year old nephew will not have the vibrant fisheries during their impressionable years like I did back in the early 80's. What's the chance of them being interested in fishing a lake after spending days of not catching anything?

I am just waiting for technology to allow you to put a lure in the water, and it chases the biggest fish down and hooks it in the mouth for you. Then, of course, some kind of alarm alerts the angler that it is time to put the beverage down and reel in the monster!!😂

I recently fished six hooks one day, and eight hooks the next day. I caught enough flathead and blue cat to feed three families for a week. There was not even a depth finder in the boat.

As a boatless low income bank angler who calls a good day of fishing 3-5 fish and not getting skunked I pretty much feel like anything beyond a damn kayak and experience is cheating. I'm out here battling snags from odd angle bank positions to find out if the bankers even have access to the bite that day and people out here nuking fish from orbit via satellite technology.
