That’s my grandma ❤️ she was SO excited when she told us about this
Goodwill baby
We need an update!!! Did she get the back removed?
im from amsterdam, we want our map back lol. (kidding)
Your Grandma had a great eye!!
Your grandma seems like a sweet lady!
I worked in preservation of historical documents while putting myself through grad school. When he said William Blaeu my heart stopped. This is in incredible condition for not being properly preserved. Certainly whomever put it to that cardboard backing at minimum understood to use quality archival glues. I would certainly remove it if I were her, bring it to a map/document specialist and hold onto it because the collectible map market is only growing. Beautiful, fabulous find. I want it myself.
I LOVE when the objects come from Goodwill!
Antiques Roadshow is both interesting and a history lesson.
More history here than on the "History" Channel.
Leave it on, no return on investment and high risk of damage!
Agreed. The cost plus risk is not worth the reward. Best case scenario make $2K or worst case lose $10K plus the $1,500 to remove/destroy it.
WCGwkf The problem is the glue. A good archival rice glue is good for hundreds of years, but this is glued to a piece of modern cardboard. This was a common practice from the mid 20th century, and usually done by framing shops. Often the glues used are toxic to the paper as they age. I have a drawing glued down in this manner around 1980, and over the decades the glue has started to turn the paper brown. In this case the paper is still in good condition and that could mean that the glue is okay, but it could also mean that it simply hasn’t been done long enough for any problems to show. With such a precious document I would not want to take that risk, because once you see the brown on the top it means that it has gone through all of the paper and the value of the item would start to plummet. As it is (without visible damage) the glue has taken $2,000-$4,000 off its value. Brown and deteriorating paper would take a lot more off. $1,500 seems a wise and logical investment to me. It also needs reframing in a museum grade matt board with archival attachment, which doesn’t cost very much, but contributes to value. To collectors buying, condition is everything, and if they think they will need to spend $1,500 with a conservator, they will try to knock at least 4 grand off the price. It is just like buying a car - buyer says “I’m gonna have to put it in a body shop to get rid of that scratch, and with a respray it will cost a fortune so I can only offer you...” Better to buff the scratch out and wax the car so the paint looks brand new.
they should investigate the glue by attempting to remove a tiny bit at the corner to see if it is composed of a substance that can over time cause damage. If the glue is deemed harmless then I would completely agree with you. It does not affect the display quality and might actually enhance it slightly though collectors generally prefer things in original condition.
haI have a map from about the same time period that is larger and similarly engraved and hand colored. It was in a frame and displayed for a number of years where it was exposed to sunlight as a result the hand tinting of some of the colors has been sun damaged. But over all it looks pretty good though not as good as this one. I had a similar discussion regarding the lack of creases with someone but they told me they have encountered such maps that were rolled up as some would have been hung on walls. I bought mine in a thrift store convinced it was a cheap reproduction but after someone who collects maps saw it on my wall (a couple of weeks after I bought it) they suggested it was real and not a reproduction. I was shocked. I have the frame it came in but it did not have glass. The frame is a common type used for large maps roughly 100-150 years ago and has unfortunately been glued to that frame but I was able to remove it preventing further damage. It also had been damaged by some masking tape but that is relatively easy to fix. It is currently in an acid free cotton folder in a light proof container until I get a chance to have it properly framed behind UV filtering glass. I paid $8 for it. Based on what I have found out about this it is likely worth about $1500 (due to the damage) and looks awesome on the wall.
I have found a number of old maps at thrift stores and that one is the nicest. I have an engraved map that is not tinted that was taken out of a British publication dated around 1785 depicting battle information in Massachusetts related to the Revolution. 8 or 9 years older and it would belong in a museum. I paid $1 at Goodwill and and actually bought it for the frame thinking it was a cheap reproduction but then I examined it and found it to be engraved on hand laid paper. Doing some research I found it was published by two different publishers one in 1784 and again by someone else in 1785 so I can't be sure which one hence my approximate date. Still very nice in the original frame. I have a nice nautical chart for Cape Cod waters that I got also in a frame and thought was a reproduction. It has the folds one expects and some damage but dates from 1897 and looks awesome on the wall in another frame I got that looks better. it fits perfect with my nautical themed parlor as do some of my other map finds.
@@artistjoh you're absolutely right, and a good conservator will know how to get the map off the board without damaging it.
@@nunyabiznez6381 I would never attempt something like that myself. Always bring these kinds of things to a professional conservator.
Gorgeous. Would love to see it in a museum.
It should be in a personal collection, not a museum.
I'm amazed how accurate the map is. They knew a lot more than I thought they would back in the 1600's.
Hi! they actually were aware from very early on how to map accurately. Other medieval maps that you may have seen were purposefully inaccurate to illustrate other things instead of geographical accuracy. For example, the Hereford Mappa Mundi was used to illustrate the world according to the Bible. It was also used to map time. Well worth some research if you are interested.
@Frenk Frenk what is it named now?
@@shelbyseelbach9568It was changed to Janszoon School For the Slightly Gifted. Middle name was much cooler!
@@jackstraw8145 just curious, but you gave an original name and a new name, then you say the middle name was cooler. If there have been two names, how is there a middle name? Seems like it would require three names for one to have been in the middle?
@@shelbyseelbach9568 the man's name that made the map was Willem Janszoon Blaeu. Janszoon being the middle. Stop being so dense.
I love that I learn so much watching this channel.
@MT1234 💩
I always check the centerfold
Right on my boi 😏
me too. saw your sister there the other day. :-P
@@swetunes ...............yikes
That's your civil duty. Thanks for your service.
It's a small miracle it still is in this condition. There are usually safe maprooms with special environmental conditions
The woman has something of Meryl Streep...
dont insult this woman like that
@@gazoo-pl4nx :))
@@gazoo-pl4nx =)))))))))
She is old
Yes, I definitely see that too
I loved maps growing up, I asked for a subscription to National Geographic just for maps! I think the most exciting news of this map is owning a piece of history. I like to think of who bought it and why... and where did they take it, if anywhere? Very lucky woman (and not just because it is valuable).
Thanks. ✌🏻👊🏼
Gorgeous map!!! Good for her!!! I love thrift shops..you never know what you will find!
I could listen to this man speak for hours
AMAZING!
I actually thought now comes a price like 50k oder something XD But, 10k is not bad aswell
I wonder how many maps like these ended up being a coloring book for kids and then thrown in the trash.
most all of them.
Well, they would have been pretty expensive. Too valuable to give to the children.
And that's how rarity is created
@@zissou6928 Sort of like the shredded Bansky painting?
Sounds like something my ancestors probably did and let me diddly squat
I've got a couple of original hand painted maps of the colonial wars of America from Goodwill as well. Even a full crew signed NASA mission poster from Hubble, piloted by one of the Kelly twins (I forget Scott or Mike without looking) that all looked to be cheap junk to the untrained eye. I paid less than $20 for all three combined.
Nice find 👍
I LOVE❤THIS
That's a beautiful map.
People making fun of her hair can't see how thick and luscious and healthy looking it is. I'd kill for her hair.
me too
She is gorgeous. I would wine her, dine her, and, well.. y'know 😁
SassyTheWhiteMaltese I think her hair is gorgeous. She’s gorgeous as well
Me too
Rick from pawn stars would have offered 50 bucks for it but only after he got his buddy down there who's a expert in maps
A buddy who is an expert on maps who cleans toilets as his main job.
EVERY goddamn Antiques Roadshow video; the same bloody comment... give it a break, dude.
Hilarious
Notice it includes Antarctica, and it's connected to South America. That is just like the famous Piri Ries map in Istanbul, and that is how the world used to look before the ice caps from the last ice age melted.
Maybe we will next see this map being worked on by Baumgartner Restoration channel.
That channel is addicting. I feel like I have an art degree after watching every video.
V C I had the same thought and wondered how much he charges for a restoration.
I need to spend more time at Goodwill!!
Yes, Goodwill. Salvation Army? NO! Why? Because they take their donated items, sell them; then take the monies and use them to pay lobbyists in D.C. to lobby *against* LGBTQ Youth legislation.
@@ivorytower99 Thanks for that info! Salvation Army is officially banned.
Right on!
Whenever I see them out front at Christmas time, ringing their bells, I will usually deposit a paper Voucher - it's online... has to do with BANNING S.A. and their corrupt ways. I could give a great example - would anyone care to hear it?

That does it, I'm saving all my AAA maps, they are full of folds, and none have been glued down to cardboard!
🤣😅😂
He took his finger and gently rubbed down the middle.
Safia Khan must not forget the bump that was found too.. someone needs to get checked ASAP 🤪
yeah he did!! lol
@@bo3tb the bump is where things start to get really interesting...
Well you have to be gentle when probing a centerfold with your finger.
What is this, Beevis and Butthead?
This is lovely and due to it's age, $10,000 wouldn't tempt me to sell it whatsoever. Gotta be worth more surely and I would hope it's value soars
I’m going to Goodwill more often....
Do. They can be a good source of wonderful things, especially here in England. I have bought lovely early glass, porcelain and prints locally.
Early 1990's. .Old Books. .Many 1920 born were Pasting. .I found great books from the 1860s to 1950. .Study Folks.
I'm guessing he's telling her to leave it on not to remove it
It's gorgeous
Wow, who knew Meryl Streep was on the antique road show haha! Great find! 🗺
🤣🤣🤣
Now we wait for the movie "Based on a true story of one woman and her goodwill map" to be made ...
Wish I could find stuff like this in goodwill
This lady has such an amazing hair
The hair is also from the 1640s and has been valued at $15k - $20k
1640 was forty years after a group of Dutch businessmen founded the VOC (the East India Company) with regional headquarters in what is now Jakarta, Indonesia. You can see a fair bit of map detail in that region of SE Asia. You can also see the outline of Northern Australia. The Dutch had no interest in exploring there, as their focus was the spice trade and its riches.

I would love to loop that over and over again. Would make a great GIF I think. :-)

whats with the crease ? is it such a big deal ?
Right hands up, who glued it up lol
Only 10k ? really , I bet she was already looking for a new house
yeah like that saturday night live version where the lady brought a 1995 Mcdonalds cup worth 5 cents
Hahaha
The original and complete atlas by Blaeu can be seen in the Allard Pierson Museum (antiquities) and the Scheepvaart Museum (shipping history) in Amsterdam, Netherlands, EU. It is called Atlas Maior and consists of NINE thick volumes. A complete atlas is extremely rare and worth many, many millions. It used to be very expensive in its day as well, in the 17th century (1600-1700), The latest atlas , Volume 9, is all about Asia. That one has increased in value immensely since China has more billionaires than America.
All beauty comes from the Netherlands 😁😁😁 🌺🌸💐🌷🌼
What interests me are all the rivers depicted on this map.
I'm certainly no expert, but even I can see a line running up the middle of the map!
It wasn’t the line up the middle he was referring to! The issue was that the crease appeared to stop before reaching the top. Watch the video again. You missed the point.
@@Person-mh6xq Your opinion!
*whew! This is the thrift store find, I think we all wish we could find :)
Really neat
So don't be tempted to have it removed

How does a paper from 350 years ago still exist without being perfectly preserved?...
Alastor It was in a frame
Instead of cheap paper, specially treated animal skin??
It's probably parchment or vellum
Where is he getting the
( MDCXXXV ) date from as I do not understand
L.M.?.D.D.D as a date.
Fold your photocopy down the middle before auction.
2:56.. I think she had a special moment there....
I didn't realize Meryl Streep had such an eye for antique maps
Best $20 she ever spent.
400 years later there'd be an insurgance of people claiming the earth was flat
@UpSideДown unfortunately they believe the bible and think there is a dome........ one even went up in his own steam rocket, died from crashing.
There ARE however people making money of these idiots, mark sargent is one. He knows its not real, but merchandise, talks etc........
The Flat Earth Society magazine says they have groups all over the globe.
MITCHELL WIGGS: From what I've heard the flat earth people don't really believe the earth is flat, they just want to annoy other people.

Is the sky a vacuum in your mind 🤔
I have a puzzle we just did of this map or one very similar to it.
For one I think that's an understatement how many paper items do you find that are 1640 or older and that kind of shape and if it can be taken off well that's even better I think that's a pretty low estimate
Nice green screen behind them. You ain’t foolin me ARS!!! Hehe
The spelling of his name is shown right in the video. It has a close up. You stilll manage to get it wrong in the title.
Plot Twist: he´s fly is the real World Map
His Tie! It's a Map!
It's a reproduction that someone folded. The plot thickens.
I love her hair
My wife’s hair is like that and she is 71 without a line or a wrinkle on her face!
Wow. She bought it for $20 at Goodwill. Now that is a Fantastic Op Shop buy.
Would you look at that!
Just look at it! *edbassmaster voice*
It is crazy how old these maps are , yet so accurate to today’s maps
I think ill take the free Google maps app I think
I have some old maps. One is of New England--back when it was Dutch [yes, already went to the American Antiquarian Society and found out it is a high end repro, about $350]; and a Carte De France map (unfortunately mounted on foam board). I still have not been able to find out about the map of France.
Where did I find these? 2nd hand shop--for pennies! Problem is with these 2nd hand stores, they are now actually looking up the value of items and pricing them like you are shopping in Israel Sak!!! Bastards... and they got them as a free donation. The whole "2nd hand shop" market is GONE, sadly.
Bastards? Mate they're charity shops mostly run by volunteers
I am speaking of the stores here in the U.S.: they are paid employees.
Goodwill use to be a gold mine now they send everything they think is worth something to their online auction. Sad
1:42 he damaged the corner making it worthless
I can't believe how careless they are in how they handle these items and without gloves.
I wasn't looking at the screen and I thought it was Charlie Rose speaking. They have similar voices.
can you imagine?
Fantastic piece of history, but are they on a greenscreen? No?
I couldn’t help but be distracted by it!
Would you look at that *edbassmaster voice*
Psh. I could draw a better map at home.
holy blaeuw!
I bet Goodwill's pissed
Wow that map is in really good condition for 1640
1640 , slower rubs booger picker across it , just to make sure
Spelled BLAEUW, take note PBS
Nice return on her investment🤑👍
Great map and GREAT hair!
Older than the Piri Reis map
Everything collectors want🤔😍it has sea monsters😃😍
Meryl Streep’s older step-twin.
What's Grand Tartarie?
It's a shame thrift stores caught on and now sell antiques for retail...
Sadly it was glued down. Removing it, would be to dangerous to me and that would be not worth it.
I'm sure some experts could assess what glue and what can/may be done to remove it.
@@r0ky_M yes, but even without damage, the cost of the removal would be almost the same as the piece would gain in worth through it, so...
Didn't know Meryl Streep was into map collecting
