I don't think it's too much of a stretch to call Xenogears one of the best RPGs ever made. If it had been a 19th century novel, we'd celebrate it the way we do Dickens and Twain - it's that good.
And Thousand Arms would have worked FAR better if it was as dark and serious as this game with no anime humor at all instead of a stupidly cheery tone.

They could've just said screw it and rolled the credits at the disc swap prompt, but they cared enough about the story to finish it with what little time and money they had left. Square wasn't interested in making a sequel, and it would've been a real waste to have left things on a cliffhanger.

What's really amazing is that it's not streaming prerecorded tracks. It's all sequenced and synthesized in a format similar to what the Super Nintendo used. But then again, we all heard what Mitsuda could do with the SNES with his Chrono Trigger soundtrack...
The game that kickstarted the Xeno brand and the tale of Tetsuya Takahashi and his team's stories about creativity, struggles, and perseverance as game developers. What an outstanding RPG game, a psychological and emotional ride, and a masterful mix of religion and science fiction.
This is a game that everyone should play at least once. The music in this game is one of the most memorable moments in my opinion. Also this is when Squaresoft was a goldmine company still.

Actually, Xenogears was the only non-Monolith Soft game before Monolith Soft were founded, I did heard they run into issues with Squaresoft so that the team made their own to Monolith Soft. Bandai Namco had rights to Xenosaga games on PS2 and then Nintendo had the rights to the Xenoblade Chronicles games afterwards.
The only _Xeno_ game I truly enjoyed. _Xenosaga_ just doesn't hold my attention and IDK if the _Xenoblade_ games are related or not (and I've never played them). It's also the longest game I've played at 75 hours from start to finish on average, _with_ GameShark codes to avoid grinding for money/levels/moves and a strategy guide so I know where to go, but it's worth it because this game is so rich in story.
Absolutely. As nice as FF7 Remake is, I'd kill for a finished version of Xenogears, by Monolith, so long as it didn't get rid of the turn-based combat. I wonder how much Nintendo would have to pony up to buy the rights from Square.
Fei Fong Wong is a name I fondly know, though I've never played ANY of the Xeno games. Not a single one. I bought _Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition_ for the Switch but slowly working my way through a backlog of gaming beset by life events has been an onus, to say the least. This is one of the games I wish I'd had a chance to play when it was new, and sometime later when I get the chance, I'd love to give it a try. Who knows? Maybe Sony will allow it on the new PSN catalog (I'm still going to grumble about losing the games I bought back when I had a PS3)!
It holds up well. It doesn't feel particularly old, even now. I hear you with the PS3. Over the past few years I've really come to hate Sony. They don't give a shit about their customers, and it's sad because they weren't always like that. I'm still super salty that I wasted money on a PS5 when you can still play 99% of the new games on a PS4.
Freaking love this game, still have my physical copy. Though I’ve only completed it once because it tends to glitch on anything other than the original console (keeps crashing on my PS3). Maybe I should try it again on a more recent emulator.

Yeah, I'm no expert at it, but I know it well enough to avoid blundering around for hours on end. The worst part was getting through that cave with all of the big jumps and the crane. I had to reload from my save several times before I got through that bit without falling to the bottom over and over again. I think the game took about 46 hours to get through. I'd have to check the recording, but that's in the ballpark. I haven't rendered out all of the parts for UA-cam yet, so it may turn into five parts depending on where I split them.
@@NintendoComplete Y'know, that was a part that I don't personally remember having trouble with? Everyone else does, but I didn't... I think I sort of mentally figured out the general interval between battles, and I just sort of capered around for a bit if I suspected that a battle was about to start before I could deal with a jump; that way I knew I'd have the most time possible to do the necessary platforming afterward. I also vaguely remember that the PS1 would start making noise as it pre-loaded incoming battles and I might've taken THAT as a cue to act appropriately, but that could've been another game and I don't remember for certain anymore.
@@YukaTakeuchiFan On a real ps1 the disc loading noise definitely helped. It's just like Skies of Arcadia. If you're walking around and the disc drive suddenly gets really loud, you know you're about to jump into a fight.
@@NintendoComplete Yeah, talking about it makes me think it was a combination of both things I mentioned: "Crap, I KNOW it's only a matter of time before I hear that disc spinning up aga-- YEP there it is. No-jumping time!"
@NintendoComplete unless I'm seeing wrong. I know the ratio is 4:3, but you made it fit youtube 16:9 perfectly and don't see too much of a zoom. or to easily say this, how did you remove the black bars?
@moonprincess32 Oh okay. UA-cam changes the size of the video window based on the resolution of the video, so I encoded the video at a 4:3 resolution (2880x2160) and it doesn't add any bars.

After playing Legend of Dragoon. I really appreciate how the VA in Xenogears did their job.

I remember reading somewhere that this was considered as Chapter 4 or 5 of a proposed 7 part saga. This was stated before we got Xenosaga.
