has to be intentional. "Live in ignorance and purchase your happiness" is literally in the lyrics and if that doesnt describe christmas i dont know what does
3:58 If I remember right the chaos is intentional, because the whole point of the song is to be an "anthem" to the world the main villain is trying to create, and the world he's trying to create is one where if you're strong enough to do it, you can do it, which would turn into chaos really quickly.
I would say its chaotic because Armstrong Is trying to keep The mask of The politician that Only that wants votes while having his true intentiona crawling under his on skin because he IS hating every minute of that performance. but also could be Rainden perspective of Armstrong at that moment.
You got it backwards, though. Collective Consciousness is a facade. It's a play on Armstrong's public political rhetoric, what he monologues to Raiden in the beginning of their encounter. "Give yourself up to the whole. No need to better yourself, you're American; you're number one!" But this isn't Armstrong's true convictions. In fact, Collective Consciousness is anathema to his beliefs. Armstrong is s hardcore individualist and Social Darwinist. He absolutely abhors sentiments like, "LET YOUR COUNTRY CONTROL YOUR SOUL." He wants everyone to "fight their own wars." For themselves, not anyone else.
Us politicians, aren’t so trustworthy. We’ll steal, make shit up, even lie to our own voters. “What? That’s crazy!” I know, it’s hard to believe, but that’s what the USA’s all about, Jack.
“It sounds like Godzilla has arrived.” For context, Collective Conciousness plays when you fight the biggest Metal Gear ever depicted in the series with a sword.
8:00 Love how you're able to accurately describe what happens within the game just based off of the music of MGR:R. Collective Consciousnesses is the theme for a boss that is practically Mecha-Godzilla except that it's shaped as a spider instead of Godzilla
Oh yeah collective consciousness. Up there with red sun as the best track from this game. The line “the fires of greed will burn the weak, so we’ll make freedom obsolete” is so METAL I just love that line every time it just hits perfectly
Hit the nail on the head with "It Has to Be This Way"; it's dramatic but the tone of the lyrics is significantly more calm, because it's the final boss fight. And he doesn't want to have to kill you, but he and your character can't agree with ideologies so they just aim to kill each other, so *it has to be this way* .

Love your commentary as usual! As a long time Metal Gear fan it's great hearing someone else mention things I have been praising forever. Your commentary on Collective Consciousness is exactly why it's also my favorite- it's not the flashiest song but how it's been designed really makes it pop out of the rest of the soundtrack and you can feel the audible storytelling without having to see any visuals at all. Frankly, I think it's the reason why a community has formed around this music, the lyrics and arrangement of each song give you an insight into each character you are fighting while also sounding great! Not to mention, it still gives an homage to the more traditional Metal Gear games really grounding it in the universe!
The thing that makes Collective consciousness unique among other MGR osts is that while other osts express the beliefs or something else about the characters, this one is what the character who this ost belongs to fights against.
kind of, but it can imo also be interpreted as the surface-level belief of armstrong (and raiden) and It Has to be This Way then reveals their true belief and desire. like armstrong _thinks_ of the people as mindless - because they are - but he doesnt _want_ them to be.
I always think it is important to remind people that the person that was in charge of the OST for this game made the music for mf Toon Town Online. The game developers hired them because they were cheap and instead the composer went and learned tonns of new styles so they could do a good job. Genuinely the Composer went so above and beyond that they should be a top pick when you need an OST for your game. Because holy crap do they actually care about the craft.
If you want a Christmas special video, you could react to the Payday 2 christmas special songs, like Today Is Payday Too, and the version of Collective consiousness synced to "All I want for Christmas is You", also known as Collective Christmas
I have to say that Lionmight reviewing MGR ost has been one of my favorite series of yt vids, this is not a bland content creator doing content for the sake of doing content for money, this is a fan of metal gear reviewing one of the sagas he loves and a professional that knows what he is talking about and teaching to people like me that loves music but is illiterate about the topic to perceive and understand the beauty of elements that used to be just sounds in a song until he pointed them out, I have realistically came out of this videos re-listening songs and enjoying them 1 more than before 2 like if they were new to me again now that I understand them better on a "the beauty of the art of sounds and instruments having as much or even more meaning, plot and background than the lyrics and the voice" level
A few fun details about the MGRR soundtrack are A) most of the boss songs are performed from the perspective of the boss and their motives. The exclusions are collective conscious (senator Armstrong's theme) is more of a manifesto of the world he seek to create, it talks about how people "cannot make judgement calls" and "never step out of line" while "purchasing happiness" and "be told exactly what to do". The other is 'it has to be this way' (which is the closest the game comes to having a raiden theme) which talks about despite the way they see each other, raiden and Armstrong do share similarities and could even be friends in a different circumstance B) the lyrics for the Boss tracks only kick in when the boss feels threatened or is taking the fight seriously. For example, in the boss fight at the start of the game against jetstream Sam the lyrics never kick in because he isn't taking it seriously at all, you just started the game after all. However when you get to the fight later the lyrics kick in almost immediately because Sam sees you as a true opponent. Armstrong also had the lyrics for most of the fight because you literally killed every single mercenary and soldier he sent after you There's so much hidden depth in, not just this game but the full MGS series that you would just never think about. It's such an interesting series while also being fun and challenging AND managing to be silly and funny Thanks for reading this far :)
Might as well give Metal Gear Rising Ost - The War Still Rages Within End Credits a listen. Its far more chill than the rest of the soundtrack. One of my favorites.
Collective consciousness is the "this is what you voted for, this is what you want, sit back and relax, and let me take over your life" song of MGR, yet even if it's overwhelming, you do feel the fallacy, the grand lie. Ultimately, it's not about them, but about you, all, of mankind, being set free and rampant with no restrictions, true anarchy. You gave up free will forever and swore allegiance to Armstrong, now all that's left, is to free the world, from itself. 🦅🦅🦅
I swear you would fall in love with some anime soundtracks. I've been listening to anime osts on daily basis for many years already and im still finding some new gems pretty often. Especially from yutaka yamada, hiroyuki sawano or yuki hayashi. These guys are geniuses when it comes to beautiful music, especially yamada's licht und schatten is something as unique and beautiful as it can get!
Something I think is neat enough to point out if you ever react to MGR again is that the songs in the boss fights are instrumentals until they start to "take you seriously", then the vocals come in and the second phase starts. That is, of course, all except for Sam and his theme Only Thing I Know for Real, where he has no second phase or gimmick, and the vocals are there from the first second, because he's already taking you seriously.
Hey man, I just recently bumped into your channel. I am always a big fan of game soundtracks and also judge the games themselves based on the musical choices in them. As you have already covered L4D and L4D2 music (which is one of my top 5 game OSTs of all time), I believe you will absolutely love the Call of Duty: World at War OSTs! They really help portray the mood and emotions of war. Visceral, horror-like, chaos and carnage, especially "The Heart of the Reich". I feel like it's very underappreciated. :)
So, little late on my end, I apologize. With most other songs in mind from the MGR:R game, the songs are more "electronic" based on the respective boss's cybernetic enhancements, with Sam's being 99% pure rock/metal with little to no "artificial"-ness to it, while Collective Conscious (The giant spider robot with a pilot enhanced with nanomachines) is almost completely "artificial" in every way, from the monotonous tone of the singer to the electronic symphony. And this carries on to a lot off bosses as well, with only Sundowner's (Red Sun) being the only one that could be labeled an outlier to this theme.
Please review "The Hot Wind Blowing" Khamsin's theme another underrated MGR song that's super slept on by fans. also check out "The War Still Rages Within" the ending soundtrack of MGR, You won't regret it. 💯
Wow, another amazing video, love to see it! Would absolutely love a reaction/deep dive on the soundtrack of one of my favorite games of all time, Project Zomboid
This is one of my favorites songs in mgr. My Top 3: this song, stranger i remain and red sun. Btw you should listen to "A phantom pain" from metal gear solid V.
18:33 this one didn’t hit as hard because it’s supposed to be standard combat music, and who’s gonna remember those hard hitting chords when they’re being pursued by helicopters and heavy hammer guys?
oh heck yeah, on to Collective Consciousness, which might be my favorite track from the album that came with some videogame. hope you are checking out The Hot Wind Blowing too, then, because im sure you'll find the surprise there. i imagine it could also be fun if you'd eventually see these songs in context of when they play, because when you said "what is this chaos" i had to smirk.
Please do another one on MGRR. There is a DLC song called Hot Wind Blowing. It plays when you fight Khamsin, a soldier in a large mech who is trying to prove himself as a Wind of Destruction. The song is about the life and views of soldiers during war. Hugh recommend it if you end up doing another video on the game’s music
Its both because of their simillarities. They both have a ton of blood on their hands which was a result of achieving their goals. Raiden for protecting the innocent and Armstrong by creating a new world order. The point is they dont back down from their goals no matter what. "Trying to make history". - "In the end it has to be this way". Both of them see no other alternative other than bloodshed to achieve their goals. "I carved my own path. You followed your wrath but maybe we're both the same". "New life will be born beneath the bloodstained sand". Both believe they are creating a better world in the end.
You're not wrong when you said that collective consciousness' subject sounds like its enormous, it's a theme for Metal Gear Excelsus which is extremely large, probably the size of a small city maybe?
what i love most of all the OST , its that each song its an anthem for one of the bosses of the game from "the only thing i know for real" represents JSsam, or "colective consciouness" represent armstrong, "it has to be this way" represents Raiden and his deccision at the end of the game. (konami we want MGR2....)
I have a suggestion since you loving MGRR so far, there's a youtuber by the name Smashtep and they have Remixed songs using Various other versions like Stains of time and such
Would definitely recommend "Soulswap" by Solitaris from the Othercide OST. It's more like a light metal, but I find it fits the game's aesthetic pretty well.
I would highly recommend the boss themes from Sonic Frontiers since you've been enjoying these so much. That game's boss themes made me feel the same rush I felt playing Revengeance.
Okay so, I read your rules for posting suggestions on songs for you to react to and they're pretty clear. however, I have a suggestion For a song and I don't know if it would be considered too obscure. Mostly because it's an original composed song for the UA-cam channel Death Battle. The video it's used in is Browser Vs Eggman. The song in question is called 'Game Over' and Death battle does let the artists who made the song upload it as it's own thing. I think it deserves a listen and a breakdown. However if it is too obscure and doesn't meet the rules you have for a reaction video I do apologize for breaking that rule and I'll delete this comment.
I don't know if you are reading this, but believe me Collective Consciousness and their lyrics takes a whole lot more of sense when in the game the songs play during a fight against a giant Pray Mantis Robot controlled and piloted by a Pro War Capitalist Politician.
Somehow I didn’t even notice that you did a different mgrr video, I guess I haven’t been paying enough attention to my notifications (Also I’m a little shocked you haven’t listened to these before)
i think you should make reactions on Silent Hill tracks. There are a lot of interesting music. Promise, Theme of Laura, You re not Here, I want Love (Studio Mix), Your Rain, One More Soul to Call, Hell Frozen Rain, and tbh many many more. Thx if you read this
you know what game has similar music stylings i feel would be great for Lionmight to look at? Dead Rising 2. All of the heavier rock and techno music of that game and its boss fights, like "own little world", "Kill the Sound", "switchback". Those would be great to be explored.
Waiting for the last 3 battle themes: The Hot Wind Blowing (dlc boss) \\\ Return To Ashes \\\ A Soul Can't Be Cut (basic or dlc version, idk). (And maybe the theme from the credits - The War Still Rages Within?)
3rd wowie I just wanted to say if ULTRAKILL is still one of the games you’re still listening to- I recommend 4 songs in particular: The World Looks White The World Looks Red Suffering Leaves Suffering Leaves Danse Macabre Just throwing things out there! When you realise this isn’t the boss theme for the boss. It’s the theme for the literal and figurative machine he’s piloting, and the facade he’s putting up. Then It Has to Be This Way comes on and you know the boss fight has actually started.

Hey
MGR's music is quite unique. Very few soundtracks sound akin to it. Its awesome hearing a separate composers view on the music.
Fellow Collective Consciousness enjoyers
my favorite song from the game 🙏
@@SurfingKyogreNL Could say we are Collective Collective Consciousness enjoyers Control that we will see
2 seconds.... How
Actually love this
what i love most of all the OST , its that each song its an anthem for one of the bosses of the game from "the only thing i know for real" represents JSsam, or "colective consciouness" represent armstrong, "it has to be this way" represents Raiden and his deccision at the end of the game. (konami we want MGR2....)
now i would really like to see your violin cover for "Collective Consciousness"
I have a suggestion since you loving MGRR so far, there's a youtuber by the name Smashtep and they have Remixed songs using Various other versions like Stains of time and such
I think it will be good for you to listen next songs looking on cat scenes or edits of bosses who’s theme you are listening to. It makes a difference
Somehow I didn’t even notice that you did a different mgrr video, I guess I haven’t been paying enough attention to my notifications
(Also I’m a little shocked you haven’t listened to these before)
Good suggestion: "Slave Knight Gael" by Yuka Kitamura. It's an amazing ost from Dark Souls 3, and I think you'd enjoy it!
"It has to be this way", fairly sure the music is perfect for the last fight, as there are a skit load of cinematic shots for the same
This is long overdue ❤❤❤
*I am lightning. The rain transformed.*
Hot wind blowing
The creators of the soundtrack had reach god level when they made it
Rock + Metal + Eletronic.
there's a band called High on Fire they also use vocal pmuch as another equal instrument
Still waiting patiently for Ludwig the Accursed Holy Blade 🙂
i think you should make reactions on Silent Hill tracks.
Yes, I'm here as well
Waiting for the last 3 battle themes:
The Hot Wind Blowing (dlc boss) \\\ Return To Ashes \\\ A Soul Can't Be Cut (basic or dlc version, idk).
(And maybe the theme from the credits - The War Still Rages Within?)
3rd wowie
I just wanted to say if ULTRAKILL is still one of the games you’re still listening to- I recommend 4 songs in particular:
The World Looks White
The World Looks Red
Suffering Leaves Suffering Leaves
Danse Macabre
Just throwing things out there! I of course recommend all of the Violence OST, these are just my favorite. I do recommend them in order though! :)
He Should Also Listen To ULTRACHUCH
LIONMIGHT PLEASE LOOK AT THE PHIGHTING OST, ITS SO GOODDDD
would love to hear you review JSchlatt's christmas album "a very 1999 christmas"
8:58 here it comes 🫡
Man he has to react to Elden ring music. Either “the final battle” or “Divine beast dancing lion”
You should listen to "A Canvas Without Stars" by DM Dokuro, the same guy who made the Calamity Mod soundtrack!
UNCLE SAM WANTED YOUR DIE, JACK!!!
Metal Gear Rising Revengeance is timeless
I suggest you listen to some of the Darkest Dungeon OST, it's very heavy and catchy. my favourites are Town in Chaos and The Final Combat
Please Listen To Creo! Preferably One Of These Songs:
1. Nautilus
2. Atmosphere
3. Challenger
4. Dimension
5. Enigma
This Is Just A List Of My Favorites Personally But If You Want To Please Listen To More Music Of His! He Makes Some Really Good Instrumental Music!
Here to request Transistor OST again 🙏
«Lionmight» actually sounds like «Lionwhyte» from Brutal Legend
Should've started with an instrumental loop then go to the lyrics, this game was the pioneer for phase 2 lyrics
You can do that in your own channel.
When you realise this isn’t the boss theme for the boss. It’s the theme for the literal and figurative machine he’s piloting, and the facade he’s putting up.
Then It Has to Be This Way comes on and you know the boss fight has actually started.
It has to be this way is kind of Raiden's theme it is showing the decisions that raiden takes at the end of the game
@@JackhanmaIRL The point is that it can be interpreted as being sung from either one. "You were just like me" is intentional. Either could be talking about the other here.
Not sure if you’ve done a dive on this sountrack when it was out but could you do one on the Titan boss themes in Sonic frontiers? They share a similar vibe to Metal Gear rising’s soundtrack. Maybe inspired by it.
Undefeatable
Break through it all
Find your flame
I’m here (original or revisited depending on what you want to listen to)
creative and awesome video cool
would love for you to react to the Block Wars OST, specifically dGc's tracks
Could you please do Entropy Zero 2: Problems of the Mind, Escalation PT 2, Transmission Shift, Remuneration
Look up Collective Consciousness remixed to All I Want For Christmas.
I'm not even kidding.
the way it sounds like an anthem kinda fits given armstrong is *the* american
Personally I’d recommend the ost for “super meat boy” I think it’s a very underrated soundtrack
hello lionmight, i've listening and seeing your OST videogames reaction and are amazing!! you can hear details I dont can, and you are explaining very completily each part of the same. Can you react to OST of Warframe?? "Like We all lift together" and "Sleeping in the cold below", which I consider greats OST, a big big greetings from Argentina
Every other thumbnail has “elegant” or “haunting” or “joyful” or “lush” etc. to describe the music meanwhile here its “NANOMACHINES” and no more elaboration is needed
