  • Obi-Wan tries to speak to Qui-Gon one last time as he observes his lightsaber. Saying it’s me or him and one of us needs to die. This is quite a line as Obi-Wan doesn’t normally live with such absolutes, but he knows that Vader wants to kill him and if he doesn’t succeed, then he’ll fail yoda, luke and everyone of the jedi who counted on him before. Obi-Wan heads to the planet nearby, as Vader falls for the bait, and orders the ship to follow Kenobi, as he takes his lambda t4a imperial shuttle down to meet Obi-Wan. The Grand Inquisitor disagrees with this move.
Maybe Quinlan Voss arrives in season 2.
Reva arrives at the Lars homestead.
Vader arrives on the planet, and he faces his former Master, obi-wan kenobi.
Have you come to destroy me, obi-wan?
I will do what I must, says obi-wan, the same line he says to Anakin on Mustafar, as he gets into his Kenobi clone wars stance, the same stance he tried to fight maul in on tatooine a few years later, until he changed his stance to the qui-gon jinn one.
So with this stance, it means Kenobi is pretty much as powerful as he was in revenge of the sith, like when he fought Grievous.
Then you will die, replies Vader, just like when he fought Ahsoka, as he charges kenobi, and we get them fighting with intense aggression and speed against one another. Keep in mind, this is Vader’s body, he’s immobile and this is really pushing his bad outdated cybernetics to the absolute limit as sidious gave him the literal worst mechanics in order to subdue him and punish him for losing to obi-wan kenobi on mustafar. In the old legends books, Vader was so immobile he couldn’t even raise his hands over his head, so all this is a stretch for him. In the brotherhood novel, it explains Anakin’s new robotic hand lags behind his organic one, so i can only imagine how Vader feels here. they get back to back like in their training flashback on coruscant. A lot of their fights are still mimicking their training as anakin and obi-wan in the good old days. It’s a nice connection.
Kenobi and Vader go at it, shredding rocks with their sabers, throwing boulders at each other with the force. As Kenobi drops a massive stone on Vader, who only shows him up in the force. It seems whatever vader lacks physically, he makes up for in the force. He performs a hulk smash with the force, breaking the floor as he gets the high ground on Kenobi, throwing boulder after boulder upon him, trapping Kenobi.
Obi-Wan has a hard time as he’s collapsing under the pressure of the boulders, when he hears voices of anakin from their duel on mustafar, from their training on coruscant, and from Vader now, as he crumbles in defeat until he remembers Leia and his purpose in life now, to protect the children, to live for a new hope. He’s the last line of defence for them. This gives him enough power and belief in himself to fight for something important, as he sends the boulders sky high, and breaks out of there. Now i know people in th watch party had an issue with this part as he sneaks up on Vader, I think it’s because he’s using the force to stealthily move up to him, but of course Vader feels it. Jedi can suppress their footsteps and use the force to sneak around. Kenobi is using some of Anakin’s old moves, behind the hand twirl and spins, he’s using form 3 soresu, but he’s one the offence, which isn’t all that much like obi-wan, he’s much more of a defensive fighter, which is what form 3 soresu is.
We see Anakin, Hayden’s face, as Obi-Wan drops his guard and is brought to tears as he cries for Anakin.
Vader says, anakin is gone, i am what remains. This is all so sad. Obi-Wan tells him i’m sorry Anakin, for all of it. Now this is where i feel the directing was really well done, as we see the reflection of blue and red on anakin’s face, showing his inner conflict between the light and dark, between anakin skywalker and darth vader.
Vader tells him he is not his failure, that obi-wan didn’t kill anakin skywalker, he, himself, did. And I will destroy you, As he looks sadistic and psychotic. You can tell Vader is consumed by hatred, Anakin is still there, but he’s twisted and turned by the dark side.
Obi-Wan says in pity, then my friend is truly dead, as he walks away. He knows Vader is no longer a threat, and just feels sorry for him. There’s no need to kill someone he’s beaten now twice. It’s inconsistent with what kenobi tells luke to do later, to kill his father, but maybe Vader goes super psycho powerful over the next 10 years, who knows what the story of Vader will be going forwards. The scream Vader does for Obi-Wan tops the maul kenobi scream for me. It’s haunting and so full of rage and pain at being beaten and pitied.

I think there's more to the Qui-Gon scene. Although maybe I'm overthinking it. But it ties into something Dave Filoni said in regards to Episode 1. Qui-Gon wasn't like the current Jedi, he embraced love and relationships in regards to being a Jedi, not isolation. He was to be a father figure to Anakin, not a brother as Obi-Wan was. Anakin's turn to the dark side was the failure of the Jedi. The forbidden relationship with Padme, the isolation from his family which led to the death of his mother. Unnecessary rules which serve no benefit which only caused more conflict and resentment. The methods of the Jedi during that period were incompatible with the core values of the Jedi and Qui-Gon knew this. This is why he was never on the council and rejected it.
So when Obiwan is buried under the rocks, what gives him strength? The bonds he has formed with others and his relationship with them. That is the true power of the light side of the force and it's something the Jedi have neglected. When Obi-Wan realizes this, it is a revelation and he is now on the same level of understanding as Qui-Gon, that is why he is "ready to see him" now. If you think about every victory in the Star Wars series it is the attachments with others which serves as the driving force. Vader was ultimately saved by the very thing the Jedi Code forbids.
This even follows into the sequels (oh no). Luke ultimately tries to recreate the old methods of training with his Jedi Temple, and yet again ends in destruction. Even Yoda knows the Jedi got it wrong in destroying the Jedi texts. The force is not bureaucratic. Ultimately I'd like to the think the end game would be a new Jedi order that uses attachment as a strength to unlock the true potential of the Jedi.
Anyway, just some thoughts. Carry on.

I feel like Obi-Wan saying “one of us must die” actually makes sense because later on he says “then my friend is truly dead”, because in that moment Anakin is dead to Obi-Wan, hence why he calls him “Darth” as he leaves. So neither of them actually die, but symbolically one does.

On first viewing I had trouble with Obi-wan showing more mercy for a full blown Sith than for his padawan that he lets burn alive on Mustafar and (presumably) die. Why would he let Vader go and carry on with his murderous projects ? He is after all the Empire's top asset and much suffering could be avoided by ending him right there. Kenobi was a pretty ruthless general during the Clone wars, and didn't have trouble killing Grievous and Darth Maul before that.
But on second viewing I have to acknowledge that it makes sense in the narrative arc of this show, with Obi-wan at first crushed by negative emotions such as guilt, fear, remorse, etc and while under the rocks thrown by Vader, his mind switches to focus on Leia and Luke and that brings him back to Light.
And then of course the flashback duel in the previous episode is precisely centered on the concept of mercy, with Obi-wan lecturing Anakin, so his behavior is aligned with what he preached then. And the theme of mercy comes once more when discussing with Reva, saying to her that it was not a weakness to have spared Luke, quite the contrary and that they were now both free (of their negative emotions I guess).
So I'm sort of 90% convinced that it kinda makes sense to spare Darth Vader for him at this point in their story at least...

I think “Goodbye…Darth” is my favorite part of this show. It gives all the context we need why Obi-Wan called Vader “Darth” on the Death Star. I never thought of it as corny, but I was always uncomfortable with the inconsistency because of how the saga progressed, so I was thankful for this tied up loose end. While I agree that “intense pain” is a big part of it, I also think pity is involved. To call him “Darth” instead of “Vader” is a sort of passive aggressive way of not taking him seriously, as if to say “Think of what you could have been, yet you’ve chosen to be this.”

I think Obi Wan's line "Then my friend is truly dead" adds some more emotional weight to when Luke tells Vader "Then my Father is truly dead" in ROTJ - perhaps this sparks a memory for Vader at that moment which may have made him dwell on his long lost friendship with Obi Wan and hence the man he was before he became Darth Vader, there may have also been an element of regret to having killed his former master and 'brother'. I would like to think that this all aided in his transition to the light side.

I will admit I was initially hesitant with the “you can’t tell anyone” as resolving the issue of canon, but the more I sit with it, the more it works for me. They established a great connection between Obi-Wan and Luke in the OT but this story gave us the idea that Leia was important too. “There is another”, as Yoda said. And while it isn’t maybe the best or most logical way to interpret the events of A New Hope, the “you can’t tell anyone or it will endanger us both” shows they at least cared to make this fit in with canon, and they chose to make this fun story instead of taking the logical approach and giving the audience verbatim what they think they will get at the expense of probably a less fun 6 episodes.

I think that Kenobi adopting Qui-Gon's stance in his final fight against Maul was more of a bait than anything. You see a look of realization on Maul's face after Obi-Wan switches stances. And then, once the fight begins, Maul attempts to counter the stance/form in the same way he did so with Qui-Gon, using the hilt to stun him. This is the point where Obi-Wan's bait-out succeeds. He uses Maul's pride to bait him into killing the apprentice the way he did the master, making him incredibly predictable to Obi-Wan, who needs only one precise strike to win. Obi-Wan won that fight before it even began.

@korrok Oh yeah there was definitely some of that as well. A final nod towards his master, who is always with him, always watching. Wordlessly expressing to his master that, while he was, finally, to avenge his death, it would be from a place of calm, controlled mercy, as upposed to the brushless and rage with which he'd approached Maul during their first battle. I think it also symbolized how things have changed - Obi Wan was not able to protect Qui-Gon (nor Anakin), but now, at the end, he would fulfill his master's final wish. He would protect the boy.

  • @SonikPanther

I love how the only way obi-wan can cope with the situation is to teach himself to believe that Anakin and Vader were 2 different people. I love how Obiwan doesn’t avoid blame in A New Hope when he said Vader was also a pupil of his like Anakin; Only that Vader turned to evil, and betrayed and killed Anakin. The sheer discrepancy between both Characters forces obi-wan to rationalize it as two individuals. His trauma and baggage are preventing him from being in a state where he isn’t constantly confronting the reality of the situation. So he constructs his own head canon essentially to help mitigate his pain. It bleeds into his training with Luke, and he justifies keeping the truth from him, as a simple difference in perspective; which with the new context of Kenobi, was a psychological state he carefully constructed to keep his mind clear of pain to be a more effective protector. Brilliant.

I loved the Alec Guinness transitions how after the fight he calls him “Darth” like he does in a new hope now he knows anakin is consumed and it’s made so many lines of dialogue make more sense from both a new hope and return of the Jedi before some felt a bit jagged with age after the prequels came out but this show has perfectly blended the dialogue with the newer ideas

Agreed- I thought the transitions were a nice way to smooth the transitions between films. Also, from an effects-level, they did the same with the merging of the robotic Vader voice with Anakin's voice, which I thought was eerily magnificent. Hayden’s ability to communicate hate and anger just with his eyes, even through the makeup and half of his face not being visible is absolutely incredible. The lighting of that scene switching from the blue glow of Kenobi’s lightsaber when Anakin was telling him that he isn’t Obi-Wan’s failure, to the red glow of Vaders lightsaber when VADER took over and said he killed Anakin, just like he’ll destroy Obi-Wan was unbelievable. Not to mention Hayden’s absolutely SEAMLESS transitions back and forth from how Anakin speaks to how Vader speaks was phenomenal, and truly showed his acting skills. His SCREAMING of Obi-Wan’s name sent a chill down my spine. And of course, Ewan’s ability to communicate Kenobi’s emotions and past guilt over Anakin’s fall with barely any word of mouth and a lot of talking with the eyes is honestly some of the best acting I’ve seen from him ever. Star Wars was such a huge thing growing up in my family, especially the prequel movies. Favourite scene by far is Vader talking with the broken mask. At first I wasn’t sure if I liked how they did it but now I’m fully sold. Every line he says is delivered masterfully. “Anakin Skywalker is gone… I am what remains” it sounds so painful, physically and mentally, yet it’s also creepy and scary. It gave me serious Red Hood vibes, whenever Jason’s mask is broken or comes off for the first time, it’s the exact same broken feeling. And then the line “I am not your failure Obi Wan. You didn’t kill Anakin Skywalker… I did.” Is absolutely chefs kiss. It’s really Anakin in a way saying “don’t blame yourself, it was all me” but at the same time he’s really pressing the whole “Anakin is dead, I killed him” thing. Which is also obviously how Ben describes Vader to Luke in ANH.

i think what i got from this scene is that i feel that Anakin would have been perfectly fine if he died in that duel right there and then. i think Anakin was ready and wanting to die. his hatred for Obi-wan is nothing more than a projection of his hatred towards himself and you constantly hear Vader saying " you should have killed me when you had the chance" Anakin wants to die at this point because he's given up he's trapped as Sidious eternal slave and leading an empire that he gives zero fucks about. all Anakin wanted was a happy life with Padme and his kids at the same time wanted to be the best Jedi ever. but all that was taken from him. both by the Jedi, sith and the war but also by his own hand and he hates himself for it.
when he's yelling after Obi-wan probably wrecking his vocal cords even more i feel he's screaming for Obi-wan to come back and finish him. Suicide is not in Anakin's nature due to his ironclad will but he was very much suicidal. Vader in the comics set before this uses alot of reckless strategies to beat his enemies and alot of them put him in danger of dying himself but doesn't give a damn.

I absolutely loved the Finale and seeing the Rematch of the Century. Ewan’s visible emotional pain and sorrow when he sees Anakin behind the mask, combined with Hayden’s voice combining in and out with JEJ’s Vader. When Hayden’s Anakin tells him “I’m not your failure, Obi Wan”, it gives Obi Wan the much needed relief and chance to heal from the trauma & PTSD of being Anakin’s master and blaming himself for his fall to the Dark Side. Anakin finally takes responsibility for his own actions and when it switches to Vader, there’s that sudden sadistic tone in Hayden’s voice that takes pride in “killing Anakin” and planning to do the same to Obi Wan. At that moment, Obi Wan gets a sense of closure that his friend, brother, and Jedi apprentice is gone and it’s only “Darth” now, hence him calling him that when he leaves. Interesting to note that Obi Wan doesn’t kill Anakin (again) because he can’t force himself to and he is still probably clinging onto hope that Anakin will come
back one day. Such a powerful scene, made me shed a tear for the first time since watching Anakin and Obi Wan’s Duel of the Fates. 10/10 acting by Ewan and Hayden and so happy they brought back my favorite childhood duo after 17 years past ROTS. I really hope Hayden gets his own show as Vader or at least bringing back him and Ewan for a S2 Obi Wan! Hayden as Anakin and Vader is 🤌🏼🤌🏼🤌🏼🤌🏼
Honorable mentions, no one has been showing love to Ian Diarmid’s cameo which was very important to the overall progression of the story (telling Vader to let Obi Wan go as it’s clearly limiting his Dark Side potential and drawing him back closer to Anakin).
Liam Neeson Force Ghost Qui Gon was great, could’ve talked about Anakin though!
Also Hello There meme at the end was a great way to end it off. Loved Little Leia’s acting and she formed a genuine bond with Obi Wan even making him laugh at the end!

The conflict on his face was just showing that Anakin was still in there somewhere. The light from the sabers and his voice modular switching in between was done very well to reflect this. I think him screaming for obiwan again is heartbreaking - I think it was all Anakin and not Vader. Anakin screaming for help again. Knowing the lengths he’d take for his loved ones (literally still trying to resurrect padme as we speak) and not getting that in return must be his undoing.
In a very un-Vader or un-dark sided way, Anakin absolved Kenobi of his guilt too, which was very kind I think in a weird way, but also cemented him as too far gone to gloat something like that.

@@kp-legacy-5477 After all, Vader is what Palpatine created for Anakin. His anger was always there, but it was all Anakin. I think Vader borns because of Anakin's love for Padme (because he needed "new powers" to save her) and because of Palpatine's manipulations. That way I don't think they are two different people.

The dialogue between Vader and Kenobi at the end of the fight had me in tears. Bravo Hayden.

I cried when Obi-Wan was talking to Anakin/Vader after his mask was destroyed. The acting was amazing and Hayden did such a fantastic job. I hope we get to see more of him and Ewan. This show was fantastic.

The show didn't need Reva at all but since she's there now I'm curious to see what they do with her character moving forward.
Star wars theory this breakdown was gold 💯
