My wife's ancestors lived on this island for hundreds of years, Some Lord or something kicked them off in the 1860s, (because he wanted to grow his own sheep there) ,
and sent them to western Victoria Australia. McKenzie, McLeod, McClean, McSwain etc

How do people earn a living on an island like Raasay - they can't all work at the distillery? Do they commute? Are they all retired?

there are a few shops and some commute

There's raasay shop, raasay house (hotel/bar) or they could go work on Skye
