Im not that good at explaining things, but you want to get engrams (legendary, exotic, prime, and pinicle) to increase your power. When you get one of these go to the cryptarc in the tower (he is the person on the right of you when you spawn in the tower courtyard), he will decrept the engrams and give you weapons and armor that will be higher in power. Once you reach 1990, prime engrams will no longer give higher power only the pinnicles will. To get pinnicle engrams, you need to do different activities that give pinnicle engrams as rewards. A few activities would be stikes/nightfalls, gambit, and pvp. These are located in the destinations tab. If you hover over the strikes and inspect them, it will show you your progress on completing the objective.
