  • Abandoned Value City Department Store / Distribution Center / Corporate Office - Columbus, OH. Closed several years as the entire chain went out of business and focused more on Value City Furniture, this location was one of the biggest buildings for the company as Value City was based out of Columbus, Ohio. This particular place has seen much better days. We happened to come across what looked to be a stolen car that was heavily vandalized while we were exploring.

Also, similar story to mine except with the building that you can see in the background when he goes behind Value City around the 13 minute mark. That used to be a factory called Shoe Corp of America. I worked there over 20 years ago. Its where I met the father of my two boys. The building still stands, and although our love crumbled, the love for my boys more than makes up for that. :)

I was the last store manager of this unit. We went though two liquidations about a year apart in 2008/9. The store was originally slated to be sold to Burlington Coat Factory but just as the first liquidation was closing, it was returned to the VC lineup. The three Col7mbus stores were originally branded as Schottensteins but were rebranded in the last year to Value City stores. Note: the Value City Furniture stores were a separate company and are still operating. After a year, the department store company filed for bankruptcy in the downturn and the store was liquidated and closed for good.

Yeah that place is trashed and the area has gone to crap. Leave your car in that lot or any public lot in a 3-5 mile radius and expect at least it broke into, or at worst if it's one of the models those young teenage "kia boys" know to quickly hot wire expect it gone. The only nice building in that area is the cop/fire station in that township on Cleveland Ave. Stuff gets robbed, they don't do anything but don't you go driving a couple miles over the speed limit though they definitely do something then. That actually is profitable for them.

I worked at this place for 23 years. I got to meet alot of good people here. I spent most of my time on the receiving docks in the rear of the building. Eventually was the receiving manager. My personal opinion is they tried to turn this into a modern store. The clothing lines were more upscaled. This was more of a bargain store to start with. The people of this area were used to that. It was a shame to see it all go. Also the original family were getting a lot older and some passed. Hello to all of the people who read this. I hope all of you are doing well.

That store is 3 days older than forever, in the 80's they added the Pavillion entrances and distribution center. That was my 2nd job as an HVAC foreman, set all of the HVAC units on the roof with a helicopter, I was about 23 years old and weighed a buck 25, thought the helicopter was going to blow me off the roof

I worked at Schottenstein's (the original store, on S. Parsons Ave (torn down around 2010)), and the four stores inside Columbus were all Schottenstein stores, and the ones outside of town were Value City Stores. Shortly after our store closed on March 2, 2005 corporate made the remaining three (here, on Westerville Rd, the West store on W. Broad St, and the East Store, on E. Broad St) Value City Stores.
Here's the reason for that. The chain started in 1916 with a S. Parsons Ave location by Ephraim L. Schottenstein, with the permanent South store opening in 1947. The family made an agreement with their rabbi that any store within the city of Columbus would be named after the family, and as such, would observe Jewish holidays, and the Jewish Sabbath which meant that the stores would be closed on Saturdays, and close by sundown Friday.
The catch was that, if they opened outside the city those stores were not bound to that agreement, so they named them Value City so they could open on Saturdays.
When the last son of Ephraim, Saul Schottenstein passed (after the South store was closed), the family decided to rename the remaining Columbus stores Value City and started opening on Saturdays. Ultimately the company, who had by then run themselves into the ground, closed all remaining stores in December 2008.
Value City Furniture Stores were owned by a Schottenstein, but were technically not part of the Schottenstein/Value City Dept. Store chain.

I mentioned this elsewhere, but I used to work for Schottenstein's/Value City for 13 years, from 1992-2005 (when the first location, which was on So. Parsons Ave. closed) The location you were at was the North Store on Westerville Rd, which was the second store built, opening in 1961. The North store was considered the "crown jewel" of the company. and of the four stores in Columbus (all named Schottenstein's, after the founder Ephraim L Schottenstein who founded the South location in 1916), clearly had the most merch coming and going as evidenced by all the truck entrances :).
By comparison our South location, which opened up the actual building we were housed in 1947, didn't even have a modern truck entrance. I spent 2000-2004 as that store's receiving manager and a modern 18-wheeler would not fit in it. Our typical deliveries arrived via a small Ryder-style truck, and if we got the bigger ones they parked beside the building or on the lot, and we emptied it via forklift and pallet jack. Hell, before they installed the elevators they used to haul merch up to the third floor with a pulley system!
When our location closed on March 2, 2005 I kept a couple of my old manifests and some other paperwork; by then I was running Housewares, Toys and Sports, and because the person who replaced me in Receiving decided to quit as soon as we announced our upcoming closure, I had to take over Receiving again -_-'
After our closure and the death of Saul Schottenstein (the founder's last surviving son), the company renamed the Schottenstein's within Columbus to Value Citys so they could open on Saturday.
But like I said, that location was the "crown jewel" of the company...it sure as hell ain't any more :(

The "Value City" sign dates to maybe early 2000s..2005ish maybe. It replaced the "Schottensteins" sign that was on the glass part of the facade. The "Department Store" is in the old Schottensteins font, that was on the original sign, and dates to probably the mid 1980s, as Schottensteins had a different font in the 70s. The building was sold last year so my guess is that it will be demolished for a new build unless the mold mitigation needed isn't too terrible.

I used to shop ValueCity back in the day in NJ. The quality on the merchandise wasn't top tier, but it was REALLY cheap? I got a pair of black leather and snakeskin cowboy boots in 1990 for about $30, and one time I got an embroidered Philadelphia Eagles sweatshirt for $5!
Lots of stores went under in the 90s and 00s. I used to work at Jamesway til they went out of business in Dec of '95. I met my 1st wife there, and after we were both laid off, she went to work for Ames. When Ames went under, she went to work at Woolworth's. Shortly after she began her maternity leave in '97, she was notified that THEY were closing. She had nothing but bad luck back then!

Never heard of a department store or any store has a distribution center at the same place.
Imagine getting your car stolen only to hear down the road that it's been stripped and vandalized then left behind a department store.

Value City Department Stores took over the old Crowley's Department Stores up here in the Detroit, Michigan area.
Naming them Crowley's Value City Department Stores. Then, they dropped the Crowley's name and they were called Value City Department Stores.
And, Value City Department Stores went out of business.
The, Value City Department Store at Macomb Mall in Roseville, Michigan is a Dick's Sporting Goods Store.
We also have Value City Furniture Stores and Value City Furniture Stores also bought some of the Art Van Furniture Stores.

Things like those old warped picnic tables make me think about years after a zombie apocalypse began. They'd be good reference for people making movies. Even the boarded up front of the store looks like people tried to stop zombies getting in.

Value City is still around in Columbus. There are about 5 left but they sell furniture only, which was the original use of the name in Columbus. In Columbus at least, the department stores were branded as "Schottensteins", and were of the quality you described..sorta "rundown" even compared to KMart. This location was a Schottensteins initially. The front facade "Department Store" was in the Schottensteins font. Around the early 2000s decade they retired the Schottensteins name and remaining stores in Columbus were all rebranded Value City, in line with the national name. Those have mostly been sold and/or closed, with most becoming abandoned like this one. and others becoming Burlington stores. The most widely known use of both Schottensteins and Value City now are for the Schottenstein Center at Value City Arena, where many Ohio State teams play, most notably of course OSU basketball. As far as the cars, you are actually correct, they are learning to drive most likely. Popular spot for that. Also some drug deals go down in that spot occasionally and is in a rougher area of Columbus. There were quite a few other abandons in that general area but have mostly been demolished or made completely off limits, including a large bowling alley and drive-in theater.

This is so funny about all the cars. I live a half mile from here, and have lived in this area since 1993. The last 20 years, a lot of immigrants settle in, and yes this is where people practice for driving tests. It's crazy to remember how busy this store used to be-- that lot was almost full every day. I wish the city would make them sometime take it down, but it's technically in Clinton township not in Columbus. So it's just an eyesore now. And yep. That was the main distribution center for the whole chain, that's why all that shipping area. It wasn't just a store it was the warehouse
