The temples of Angkor
Angkor Wat is the largest and best preserved Hindu temple in the Angkor settlement, Cambodia. Built in the 12th century, it is part of the temple complex in the former capital of the Khmer Empire. Initially dedicated to the god Vishnu, it combines the Hindu typology of the temple-mountain with galleries typical of later periods.
Its five lotus-shaped towers and impressive architecture make it one of the most important archaeological treasures in the world.
Angkor Wat is called “The Replica of the Universe” and represents an earthly model of the cosmic world. This majestic Hindu temple, located in Cambodia, is considered the largest religious structure ever built and one of the most important archaeological treasures in the world.
Angkor Thom was the fortified intramural royal city built by Jayavarman VII, king of the Khmer Empire, at the end of the 12th century.
It replaced ancient Angkor after its conquest and destruction by the Chams.
This complex, along with all of Angkor, was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1992.
