I used to love the sea, after all i live in an island, until one day i was taking a morning swim at the beach and i kicked something sticky and jelly like behind me, i looked and saw nothing, then on the way back when a launch my arm foward to swim i felt and extreme sharp stabbing pain on my whole arm. I was confused and scared (i was like 12 years old at the time) i ran to my grandma panicked and she immediately knew what it was, she said you got sting by an "Agua Viva" translate to "Alive Water or waters thats alive" we call it that because they are transparent and virtually invisible in the water. Turns out that day there was a big storm forming a couple of miles away and the Jellyfish come to the shore for safety. At the end theres was roughly 100 of them in a little area of the beach. Since that day ive been fearful of the sea, that pain i felt that day, ill never forget. Sorry to take too much of your time 😅.

11th grade Marine Biology student here with more info. The stinging cells are known as nematocysts (c pronounced as "s" if you're wondering). These nematocysts are housed by slightly larger cells known as cnidocytes (first c is silent and second one is like "s"). You may hear jellyfish (and sea anemones) be referred to as "cnidarians" when learning about them, they get that scientific umbrella term from the cnidocytes they each have. Also, Zack, if you're seeing this, when we were focusing on the Titanic and Titan submersible events, your video on the sub was featured in class.

For those who are concerned: Rinse the area with vinegar (or sea water), DO NOT use tap or fresh water it will cause the stingers to flare up. AND if you can pull out the stingers with tweezers, DON'T scrape it! Apply 0.5% to 1% hydrocortisone cream or ointment twice a day Also go see a medical professional if you feel dizzy or something asap (The stingers are called nematocysts)
Yeah, going to a medical professional may be necessary depending on what you were stung by. If it's a box jellyfish (which tend to have a more cubical shape), then you may not want to wait, their venom can be quite deadly compared to others
I've been stung on a diving trip before, and that stuff hurts way more than it should. The tentacle wasn't even attached to a jellyfish, I just looked down and saw this string looking thing touch my arm, and then there was instant pain. I signaled to the dive leader, and we continued, but I couldn't touch it lest I push in more barbs. I consider myself lucky because everyone else, including my dive buddy, had gotten zapped by a whole jellyfish at least once on the trip. He got it on his shoulder, another girl got stung on the leg, and my brother right on the neck. Though my dive buddy did save my butt by yanking me back just before I was about to go headfirst into a jellyfish I didn't see 😂. Most could have been prevented if they had been wearing their shorties. But it was in the British Virgin Islands and the water was very warm.
FYI you were most likely stung by a Portuguese Man of War, not a jellyfish. Jellyfish can’t sting if their stingers unattached as you mentioned. They look the same but the Portuguese Man of War is different than a jellyfish, it’s essentially a colony of microorganisms functioning as a single animal, whereas jellyfish are normal multicellular animals.
I got stung by a detached tentacle too, I was told to be careful about allergic reactions as my fingers would turn green and I'd have difficulty breathing, I didn't get that but the pain was unbearable
I was thinking, just like how you watch where you are walking when in a crowd of people so you don't accidentally bump into someone, you should also watch where you are swimming so you don't bump into a jellyfish and get stung. Respect!
I got stung by a stingray in my left foot and the pain was excruciating. It traveled all the way up my leg and left it temporarily paralyzed but I still felt every bit of the pain like it was coming from inside the bone marrow outward. I couldn't move my leg or anything. Ended up soaking it in hot water for a few hours. That left foot was swollen like a balloon for a few weeks.
Never will forget the day me and my buddy were boogie boarding, and this massive wave came over us when we weren’t paying attention, and in that wave were a ton of jellyfish. We got back to the bank and our backs were covered of red streaks from the tentacles…. Not fun..

Eventually i saw an elder go very deep in the ocean, and my eight year old brain accepted it as a challenge to see if i could get deeper then that man, i was already knee deep and it looked like i was winning!
