THANK YOU, my husband and I just purchased a home with a water softener system and we were going to call someone. This was so easy to follow and take care of.
Glad you found it helpful.
My wife and I bought a home with a similar water softener about 4 years ago. I have neglected it all this time. This video has really helped me in getting it back up and running. Thank you
Thank you!!! My spouse was thoroughly impressed!!! Saved money and looked like a macho man!!! 😂
Glad it worked out for you.
Straight-forward, well-explained in everyday English, with no technical mumbo-jumbo. You! Are! A! God!
Glad you liked it.
Thank you for creating this step-by-step video. It helped me out a lot!
Great job! Only thing I would suggest is to only put in about 2-3 bags of salt instead of 10. I have the same water softener and it isn't using salt, nor am I getting soft water. it does regenerate every night. I called Culligan and they tested the water and tinkered with it and charged me almost $110 and it still is not working.
I have seen the bottom of my brine tank and it didn't look to have all the build-up in the bottom, and I am surprised as the system is over 30 years old. I will dig into it tomorrow. Enjoyed the video, Thanks.
My system is only 24 years old but we have very hard well water. Your resin may need to be replaced. It's a fairly easy job.
ua-cam.com/video/I9nenH07co4/v-deo.htmlsi=oYcpWVmRrf_8mR_N
It looks just like mine lol. Thanks for the help
You're welcome and thanks for watching.
Thank you! Every how many months to do this?
You can dump the cleanser in as often as you like. You only need to clean the salt bin when it gets gross. Maybe every two years.
Good video! What did you use to clean out the brine bin? Should you run a re-gen after cleaning and filling with salt? Thanks
Soap, vinegar, ammonia.
I don't like using bleach on plastic, the smell seems to linger.
Yes, you should do a regen to get the brine tank refilled with water and any air out of the lines.
Thank you! Mine is smelling! Didn’t know how to clean it.
Vinegar and soap should be enough. Bleach takes forever to rinse away and can permeate the plastic tank.
Where can I find the culligan salt tank valve??? Mine I know is missing something and would like to replace it.
I am set on re- bedding my mineral tank just like you show in the other videos. Thank you Merry Christmas!!!
You'll have to find the parts breakdown. Try your local Culligan dealer or eBay for the parts you need.
Thanks for the informative video ! Question . Sometimes the fill tube starts to shake violently during regen ( not all the time ) . Any idea how to fix ?
Check your water pressure, it may be too high.
I just bought a home and looked in the brine tank. Empty with the exception of some dirty water. My only issue is that it’s winter now and temps are hitting below 20 degrees. Not gonna be able to use the garden hose
Clean it the best you can using water from the sink.
Hey gang.. So I heard my system regenerating while I just happened to be using the faucet at the sink when the water pressure suddenly went to nothing.
I ran out to the garage to try to stop the regen cycle.. I heard a clank sound, and it stopped regenerating before I could do anything.
I thought to myself, well, now my softener is damaged. Holy Toledo. I waited for the water to come back on before I manually started a regenerating cycle. It did start, but I swear it didn't seem to run very long. Usually, when it self starts, it runs for a while.
I did some research on Google. Some say all of this can damage the unit, while others say it's common, and these newer units simply shut down with no damage. That clank I heard has me worried, so here I am.
Shouldn't matter if you are using water while it's in regeneration mode. The system bypasses the mineral tank while it does it's thing.
Check your salt tank and make sure there is water in there.
@@HouseDoctorRay I'm sorry. The point of my question is not about my running water during a regen. The unit was in the big middle of regeneration when the water company shut the water off for maintenance.
You may need to do a regen twice to get the air purged and have the salt tank refill after the water is back on.
@@HouseDoctorRay Yes, I ran a manual regen once already. I just need to know how these machines handle water being shut off during an active cycle.
It shouldn't damage the unit. The worst that should happen is you get air in the system or the salt tank doesn't have any water for the next regeneration.
I just bought a house and it has the same system
I know I need to add add all of sal as he tank is completely empty
But is there a way to adjust water pressure
It’s really low
Thanks in advance
Sorry, just got this notification.
You may need to replace your resin. It can break down over time and get clogged with sediment.
ua-cam.com/video/I9nenH07co4/v-deo.html
I would check the pressure before the softener or with it in bypass to see if that is the problem.
Did you overfill the tank a bit??
Which tank? If you're talking about the salt tank there is no reason not to fill it all the way to the top.
I have an opening at the back of the brine holder that has an L-shaped tube going out. I'm assuming it's an overflow. I haven't lived in my house but one day a week for 13 years. Now, I'm putting two bags of salt pellets. Putting the second one in is when I accidentally discovered this "overflow." I'll watch this video to see if I can figure out how to change from a screen on the console that is simply flashing with what looks like a time.
I bet you;re the sort of daredevil who runs with scissors as well!...thanks for the upload
Awesome . Didnu shut off the resin tank hose before cleaning? I saw you at tye end of the video reaching behind the system and twisted something. Thx
That was my system bypass valve. I put in bypass so I wouldn't bring the clean tank back inside and find a flooded basement.
Do I put it in bypass mode before I add cleaner and regenerate?
No. Bypass mode completely shuts off the unit from the water system. It needs the water pressure to syphon the cleaner from the salt tank. The cleaner will not get into your water system.
I would recommend purchasing a bottle of Res Care Resin Cleaner and a pack of Sani-System Water Softener Sanitizer. You can pour both down the brine well and the regenerate the water softener. This could bring back the resin to life and also sanitize water softener.
Excellent advice. Thanks for posting.
How many bags of salts do I need to put in sir
Depends on your bin size. Mine takes ten.
You want the salt to always be above the water level.
Just bought a home with a similar unit. However there are 2 tanks setup with this unit. One with buttons status, regen, +, -. And the other tank device has arrow up, arrow down, X, and a checkmark. Any idea what I've got going here? Also, where can I find these products, and approx how much are the bags of salt? And what is the term for it? I'd appreciate any knowledge you can share. Thank you
Not sure about the second tank. Try posting pictures in a home improvement group on Facebook.
You can buy bags of salt for water softeners at most hardware stores. Prices vary depending on the size bag you buy.
@@HouseDoctorRay Thanks
Nice explanation !!!
How did you determine the black contaminant wasn't black mold?
Honestly, I don't concern myself with such things.
Thanks for the recommendation. Great information in the video 👍
I have a Culligan system that has been unused for about 3 years now as we moved into a new home. The whole system is 9 years old. It has been on bypass mode now for years. I cleaned out the brine tank but have not used a resin cleaner or sanitizer yet. I'm wondering if I need to change out the resin at this point or if the cleanser you used would be good enough. How often does resin need to be changed out?
No specific time that it lasts. Try a few bags of salt and the cleanser and iron out. Force it to regenerate a few times letting the water rest in the brine tank for at least 3 hours in between.
Then see if the water is 'soft'. You'll be able to feel the difference.
My water softener is approximately 25 yrs old. Must be getting plugged because the house soft water supply has reduced by 50% in the last few weeks. The head of the softener on the tank has a red lever. Do you simply pull back on the lever to unlock or remove pressure in the tank?
That is probably the bypass valve. You need to put it in bypass, then force regeneration, then you can disconnect it.
hi,...
is me again.
I need to know somethings which no one at Culligan wants to say. They wants me to buy a new system.
I paid $6600 for it many years ago...someone said I got gypped.
So that system you're working on in the video which is the same as mine...how much gravel does it need?
and how much resin?
I'm going to buy it and do it myself thanks to your videos.
My tank is 8"x44"
There is a link in the video description to calculate your tank size and how much resin to use.
You need enough gravel to cover the slits in the center pipe. I just used the whole bag. You want to fill the tank with resin to about 3/4 full, maybe a bit more.
If you hold a bright light up to your tank you'll see how much resin is in there now.
@@HouseDoctorRay ok good. Thanks.
is me again...I think
I just bought a house with this exact culligan softener. My water isn't getting softener. I have cleaned the brine tank. How do you clean the brine injector? What are the steps?
You may need to replace the resin if your system is as old as mine.
ua-cam.com/video/I9nenH07co4/v-deo.html
@@HouseDoctorRay thank you! I'll get the gravel and beads together. I've saved the video.
You got this Pete!
@@HouseDoctorRay we will see! This scares the crap out of me!
Great video thanks for sharing!
Thank you and thanks for watching.
Will this help with the “rotten egg” smell in my cold water?
It may help but should be done annually either way.
A whole house filter with a charcoal insert would probably do more for the odor.
ua-cam.com/video/qUQvqMR3_JY/v-deo.html
I have a question, I did everything and for some reason there's some light brown water coming thyroid the toilets and the water from the fridge (dispenser) as well. What could be the reason for this? Thank you!
It is likely sediment in the pipes that was stirred up when the water was off. You could also have sediment in your mineral tank. A regeneration or two should clear it up.
If my Culligan MultiMax Conditioner brine tank has water levels a little bit over half, can I just dump this cleanser and do a manual regen? I want to clean my tank and re-add salt. I see no salt in my tank. My brine tank has blue water and black particles floating.
I would clean it out. That blue is probably some kind of algae.
I saw online that Iron Out would bring the resin "back to life" have you heard same? If not what would be a good product?
Thank you,
It is worth a shot. If it doesn't work the resin is easy enough to replace.
ua-cam.com/video/I9nenH07co4/v-deo.html
Thank you
By the way great job on cleaning out that salt tank!
Great video! Did you use Dishsoap and vinegar to clean the brine tank as well? Thanks
Yes. I didn't want to use anything harsh like bleach or ammonia.
How long can that water softener last? I have the same one and want to know if I should clean it or replace.
You should clean the salt bin at least once a year. The resin pellets do eventually lose effectiveness but it's a lot cheaper to replace the resin than buy a new unit. Here's how:
ua-cam.com/video/I9nenH07co4/v-deo.html
@@HouseDoctorRay oh okay thank you for the reply! So if I replace the resin and clean the bin once a year how long could one of these last me?
As long as the electric motor lasts. My Culligan is 20+ years old.
@@HouseDoctorRay oh okay that's great to hear! Last question, when it comes to these water softeners are the brine valve assemblies universal? Or do they have to be the exact same one that's being replaced?
The size of the brine tank determines how much water is available for backwash. You could interchange them if you had a similar size.
If you buy a new system you'll get a new brine tank with it.
Did you put the water softener cleaner into an empty salt tank? Or was there other materials in it? Ours is empty and hasn't been used for years and want to try this but unsure if I need salt in the tank first?
The system needs to be working. Open the bypass valve and force the softener to do a regeneration. When it is finished you should end up with water in the salt tank.
If that works put the cleaner in the salt tank and do another regeneration. After that is all done you can add some salt.
You should force a regeneration once a day for a few days to purge the softener of any build up when you first start to re use it.
Ever since this E3 code came up, my culligan hasn’t worked . I constantly unplug it and plug it back in to reset it and it starts making noises for about 60-90 minutes and I’ll have soft water again for maybe a couple of days and then back to crappy super hard water and pellets not used up. I hate this thing. It’s only maybe 5 years old and it sucks. Any idea how I can fix this? I might toss it and get a different one , not culligan.
Could be the switch that determines the position of the motor. Unfortunately parts for these are hard to purchase if you're not a Culligan Man.
@@HouseDoctorRay thank you very much for the quick response. And that’s what I’ve been hearing…. “Only Culligan can fix it” from others, which makes me want to purchase a softener that is consumer serviceable. Any suggestions would be great.
My Brine tank is currently not filling up with water. Could this be due to a clog in the tank?
No, it is either the head unit on the mineral tank or the lines and tube to the brine tank are clogged.
First thing I would check is the tube going to the brine tank. There is a float switch to set the water level; it may be stuck.
@@HouseDoctorRay Thank you. The line seems to be OK since I can blow into it, and here it bubbling and the bottom of the tank. The control valve on the float switch?
If you can blow through the line into the brine tank then the head unit on the mineral tank isn't sending water to the brine tank.
If it's a Culligan here is how I took mine apart and cleaned it.
ua-cam.com/video/q9oMG6jd1UA/v-deo.html
Thanks!
Great video. Due to a home purchase, I'm a fairly new owner of a two-resin-tank Culligan system. Every other year, they show up and 'swap' my 54" HE Tank for a so-called refreshed tank, itemized on their bill as an "AI PURGE". I'm wondering, are they simply doing a cleaning process similar to your video back at their facility, then swapping in their clean tank for my 'dirty' one? If so, I believe your method could save me a chunk of change.
Not sure what they're doing.
That are pulling the media out of the tank cleaning the tank and putting new media back in
Thank you for posting this helpful video.
Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.
How do you add water? Did you add it manually or does it fill it when you run the regen? Do you set the water at a certain level?
It will refill during the regeneration cycle. The long black rod has a float on it that shuts off the water at a preset level.
Are you supposed to fill it that full with salt?
You can put as much in as you want. I always fill it all the way.
Never fill brine tank with salt if left on the intendant it creates a salt bridge also tonight by pellets use solar or crystals they deserve better pallets or cheap salt leaves residue other than that great video
I use the oval shaped salt pellets and never got a bridge or salt clog.
I have the same system in your video should my regen be loud and sounds like high pressure spitting water?
Mine also makes a lot of noise. You don't really hear it on the video because the discharge hose is very long.
I assume we bypass before pouring cleaner in there and letting it regen?
You don't use the mechanical bypass. Once you put the cleanser in the brine tank and force the unit into regeneration mode it is effectively in bypass.
If you use the mechanical bypass the unit won't operate because it needs water pressure to syphon water from the brine tank.
So nothing to shut off and back on as far as hoses?
Thank you,
I am not sure how my system is but it is not working properly. It supposed to use the course solar salt but the last time it got filled they put in the pellets and it taking forever for it to get used up and doesn't seem to work at all. The water is hard and it has an oder. What should I do? I am thinking about dumping it out but it is half full of salt?
First thing to check is if the brine tank has water in it. Then when it goes into regeneration the level of water should go down.
You might also have a salt bridge where the salt sticks to itself and won't go down. You can scoop the salt out and put it into a clean container or trash bag if needed.
How much salt did you add? I recently purchased a home with a Culligan system that needs serviced and can’t find an answer on my question. Thanks
I filled the brine tank completely. It took 10 bags, 40 lbs each. You can put in less, but no harm in filling it all the way.
@@HouseDoctorRay LOL
I have a "check salt" warning on my Culligan Gold series display. I checked the salt and noticed it hasn't really gone down any over since I last filled the salt up. I'm currently trying to regen, because the only thing I could find in my manual about the issue says "The alert can only be cleared after a successful regeneration of the resin bed." Have you ever encountered this issue? Great video btw, thank you!
You could have a 'salt clog' or bridge in the salt tank. This happens when the salt clumps together and won't fall down. Make sure it is loose, you may have to take some out to check.
If that is not it then read through this:
www.doityourself.com/forum/water-softeners-air-filtration-systems/455807-culligan-not-using-salt.html
@@HouseDoctorRay Excellent, thank you for the advice, I'm going to check it out right now.
You also may have valve that’s not drawing brine, usually the case
The Culligan brine well (the tube inside the tank)... does it not come with a lid cover? Many other brands of brine wells have a lid cover... can you confirm?
Yes, there is supposed to be a cover. Mine is long gone. It is just there to prevent the salt from falling in there when you fill it.
@@HouseDoctorRay Mine doesnt have the cover either when I bought the house... so I guess the previous owner lost it as well.. alas.
My bink tank run out of salt, i bought some, clean my tank but I dont see any button on the softener tank to press to regenerate, its plug in .. I have a elan water treatment, can you tell me what to press to fill water in the bink tank
If you no longer have the manual search for "force regeneration elan softener xx". Replace the xx with your model number. Good luck!
@@HouseDoctorRay thanks dear
I have that same Culligan water system... can you do a video tutorial on how to set that control box and all the various settings for the many stages of the regen cycle? Reading the manual is so confusing...
Great idea! I'll have to get out my manual.
When you cleaned it did you just use dish soap? And is that typical to just fill them to the top and how many bags does that take about? Thanks for the video! Very helpful im sure culligan would charge 500 and make it sound fancy but really just to the same thing
I used dish soap and white vinegar. For my brine tank it takes about 10 forty pound bags to fill it up.
I fill it all the way up so I don't have to fill it as often. If Culligan didn't want that much in there they would have made the tank smaller.
@@HouseDoctorRay LMAO
I have the same softener. When you run the regen/backwash with the cleaner, were you in bypass mode or no?
No, you want the cleaner to flow through the mineral tank. Bypass mode is if you have a leak or need to do more serious maintenance such as changing the resin pellets.
@@HouseDoctorRay Thank you for getting back to me. We bought this house and found out the softener has been inactive for two years. I'm going to scrape out everything in the brine tank. Does it matter if I pour the cleaner in the main brine tank or in the float valve tube?
The brine tank is the smaller tube inside the salt tank. Killed all that grass too lol.
Mine, which is just like yours, isn't regenerating when I push the regen button. Plus I need to change out the beads which I'll do that later. Brine tank has a acidic smell to it. I added Iron out about 2 weeks ago. I hate calling someone but may have to. Appreciate any help.
Sorry I didn't get a notification for your post. Check out these other two videos I did.
This may help your non Regen issue:

Changing resin is easy:
ua-cam.com/video/I9nenH07co4/v-deo.html
My system looks similar to yours, but it says "check salt" on the display. does that mean the salt tank is dirty? havent ever took it apart since owning the house and I bet the old owner hasnt either. I regenerated twice and it still has the error. any advice?
Check to make sure the float is moving freely. Also see if the hose and pipe that goes into the brine tank is clogged. It comes off easily, try blowing through it or running water through it.
You might also want to check this out.
ua-cam.com/video/q9oMG6jd1UA/v-deo.html
@@HouseDoctorRay is the float that black thing in the salt tank with the hose attached to it that goes to the other tank? If so, what do you mean moving freely? It looks like it's just resting there.
The float I am referring to the thing at 3:20 in this video.
In the video it is the steel rod with the white part. If the water gets too high it shuts it off.
@@HouseDoctorRay yeah the white styrofoam thing? Its sitting like yours. the water level is not too high. i took out most of the salt pellets so i can see the bottom of the tank and did another regeneration and now all the water is brown. i was going to just throw the unit into BYPASS and clean out the tank and see what happens. anything you would suggest? the water looks to be maybe 4-5 inches deep like the manual says. i can feel the bottom of the tank so i dont think any salt is stuck.
I just noticed that our water softener stopped using salt, it's been a long time since I put new salt in it and it still has the salt that I put in it like six months ago.
Then a couple weeks ago the water dispenser on the fridge stopped working, probably due to hard water being pumped through it. I dunno what to do!
Look down the small tube in the salt (brine) tank and see if there is water in there. Then run a regeneration cycle on the softener.
The water level should go down, very slowly. If it does you may have developed a 'salt bridge'. The wet salt can get stuck together and not fall down into the water. You need to carefully break it up.
If there is no water or the level doesn't change then there is a problem with your mineral tank valve or the line running to the brine tank.
@@HouseDoctorRay Thank you for replying so quickly! :)
I did what you said, did a regen cycle, it sounded pretty bad, like it's struggling. I gave the salt a stir.
I discovered that the valve above the water softener was closed. So I opened it and it sounds like it's flowing a little better. It's not like an obnoxious hissing noise like it was. I'm wondering if the guy we had look at the fridge turn that valve off? Cause one of the copper lines go off of it and that goes directly to the fridge, so I'm assuming he might have turned it off to work on it. Ever since the problem with the fridge came up, it's been freezing food too. If it's not one thing, it's 6 others.
Since it's been a while since your softener regenerated properly you should do a regeneration daily for a week. It will take quite a while to get rid of the mineral buildup. You can't do it one after another because the brine tank needs a while to dissolve more salt.
As far as your water dispenser you may want to see if a dummy filter is available.
This video may also be your problem:
ua-cam.com/video/A-_rnlXNPDY/v-deo.htmlsi=rqC9F51VzEQn7iUi
So I’m assuming since that you used your garden hose to clean tank that the water throughout the distribution system still works despite the water softening system being disassembled? Thanks for the video by the way. I’m seeing what looks like rust in my toilet and got me wondering.
All softener systems have a mechanical bypass so you have water if the unit fails.
Rust could be iron in your water or mineral sediment. Vinegar should clean it easily if you fill it overnight.
Find a water testing company that doesn't sell systems. Check with your county or nearby university.
Wouldn’t the ammonia and vinegar, caustic and acid, cancel each other out?
I'm no chemist. Ammonia for cutting grease. Vinegar for killing microscopic critters and deodorizing.
Thank You Sir!
I think mine has a drain on the bottom no clue how to take it out
If you mean that your salt bin has a drain on it I wouldn't try and remove it. Just clean bin out really well then rinse it out with a hose.
@@HouseDoctorRay I mean I can't disconnect it the same I think idk if it has an easy thing to pull out it is Culligan I will have to look and check it has some rocks in the bottom even though they told me to use their salt it's not pure at all
The small plastic hose running from the salt bin should have but at the end. You should be able to easily loosen that and pull the hose out.
TY!!!
YW!!!
What about that filter doohickey in the middle? Does that ever need replacing?
Also, are there supposed to be some kind of beads at the bottom of the tank that you washed and filled with salt?
Just got a house with a water softener that has not been maintained; tank is empty and dirty, so I definitely need to clean it, but no idea what else needs to be done.
The filter dohickey is not part of the softener system. Yes, the filter needs to be changed. See here:
ua-cam.com/video/qUQvqMR3_JY/v-deo.html
If your softener is not working properly it may need the resin beads replaced. They are in the mineral tank (scuba tank).
ua-cam.com/video/I9nenH07co4/v-deo.html
Just get rid of the old, water softener. The water will leave scale deposits on your sinks and shower.
You don't need to clean the injector?
The cleaner that gets dumped in the brine tank should take care of that.
Great video. The “really? Working w an open knife??” made me laugh…but I know it’s not funny when you cut yourself in that totally avoidable way!!
wow, i've never seen a brine tank filled up to the brim with salt pellets. lol
Saves trips to the hardware store.
I’ve been told just keep it above the water
Then you have to check it constantly. Mike didn't design the brine tank to be that tall if it only needed to be 18 inches high.
It is fine to fill it up to the tippity top.
I remembered, it was because you can get an “salt bridge” build up , I used to keep a broom handle near the tank to break it up when it happened. Anyhow thanks for the info, cleaning mine tomorrow.
Try the salt pellets that are shaped like a football. Been using them for years and never had a bridge form. They don't pack together as tight as the crystals do in the tank.
Thanks
Personally I would have run the Whirlpool cleaner through the mineral tank after the brine tank was cleaned because all that nasty stuff went through the mineral tank.
Good point. I ended up replacing the resin about a year later because it wasn't working well. Works great now.
ua-cam.com/video/I9nenH07co4/v-deo.html
Great video but just be careful that dumping that brine could hurt your lawn!
That was just a little residue in the resin tank. I washed out the salt tank in the driveway.
Do not suggest emptying onto your grass, unless you want dead grass
I dumped the bulk of in the trash bag. That was just a little residue after rinsing.
that salt your pouring on your lawn will kill the grass.
That was the remnants of the old resin.
@@HouseDoctorRay ok. I did very much appreciate the video.
It would have been useful for the presenter to give us some details on the manufacturer directions of the resin cleaner including the brand name and what it is composed of. The second recommendation would be for the presenter to correctly refer to the tall cylindrical tank as the resin tank. I have no idea why you are referring to it as a mineral tank. My understanding of what the resin tank does is capture calcium and magnesium ions, then when the resin tank is regenerated through the use of brine, the calcium magnesium are flushed out of the resin beads. Hard metal such as iron remain on the resin beads and the liquid resin bead cleaner which you poured in the empty Rhine tank remove the iron from the beads. At least that's my understanding of what's taking place. The other recommendation I would make for the presenter is to clean the exterior of both the prime tank and the resin tank for sanitary reasons. Also, I don't believe you mentioned what the incoming big blue housing contained and why. Is it a carbon block filter to remove chlorine? Is it a sediment filter to remove fine sediment? Anyway I hope you use these comments to help improve your presentation if you do another one. Take care.
