    Of course mere minutes before this video went up, the WD is now available for Source Filmmaker, making it not at all possible to re-render the intro to match the first sentence of the script...

    I’d say what people need to remember is that Thompsons locos were designed for an age of austerity where heavy mixed traffic was everything. The video did do a great job in showing some examples of that.

    One thing I've never understood is why the whole "cylinders being too far back" argument, always comes up with the Thompson's but not with
    The castles, the kings or the princesses.

      Probably because specifically for LNER enthusiasts the looks of Thompson's pacifics stick out like a sore thumb compared to the looks of both Gresley's and Peppercorn's pacifics. The LMS pacifics fit the aesthetic of other LMS locos, GWR Kings looked like other GWR locos, but Thompson's locos didn't look like other LNER locos. Usually the outside cylinders are up front over the guide wheels. On Thompson's designs the cylinders were moved further back to just in front of the drive wheels. When you're used to seeing Nor' Easter' pacifics with the regular cylinder arrangement it makes the front end look like it's got wasted space.
      I'll admit, though, they were better engines than a lot of folks give them credit for.

      Thompsons Pacifics don't follow the typical pattern of Divided Drive. The middle cylinder is *mostly* in the same place as it would be on a Gresley machine, but for the equal con-rods to work the outside cylinders completely clear the bogey. Oddly reminiscent of the early A2's being rebuilds or conversions of engines with one leading axle instead of two. Contemporary designs on the LMS and GWR with inside valve gear have the inside and outside cylinders each rest over an axle. Really Thompson Pacifics have a closer layout to a Chapelon Pacific, but even then the layout for the latter uses four cylinders with the larger low-pressure cylinders on the outside. 3 high pressure cylinders that spread apart, with two of them driving past the middle of the frame, upsets the center of gravity

    Great look back at an Iconic class of locomotives. I get the same with me being a Southern Railway fan and lots of people saying "The Southern was boring and didn't make anything special and their locomotives were outdated" But once you look under the surface you find an incredible variety of locomotives and legends like the Lord Nelson's which annoyed the GWR so much they built the Kings in response and the Nelson's still had the lighter axle load.

    An interesting expansion on your earlier video giving further objective reasons why in service they became a second to none design in many respects. I've always rather liked the "long lads" look in contrast to the other LNER Pacifics & I've certainly got a soft spot for the A2/3's. It's also good to see the rather foolish blind prejudices against Edward Thompson himself falling away more & more these days after proper appraisals of his invaluable work are now available for all to see. Congrats on making it to 3 years, maybe videos on the Peppercorn A1's & A2's (who also disntinguised themselves in service on Scottish lines would be a fitting way to celebrate?!

    Watching this gave me nostalgia for the original episode
    Also at 8:36 you said "Owen Tudor freshly renumbered from 519 to 60519"
    That is incorrect as Owen Tudor was no. 530/60520.
    No. 519/60519 was Honeyway you mentioned that earlier!
    If anyone's reading this
    Cheerio :)

    Man, now I want someone to make Thompson's pacifics for Train Sim Classic. BMG would probably do a really good job if they did.

    I'm gonna be honest, at first I didn't like Thompson and his designs. However, you have really changed my opinion on the Thompson engines. I definitely think they look rather nice now, and even though Gresley's pacific classes like the A1 and A3 are still my personal favorites, I have more respect for Thompson's pacifics now.

      From what I understand the 2/3 was like one of two of his only original designs and the rest were just rebuilds. That's what I dislike about Thompson. He just out of spite (presumably because he did marry Vincent Reven's daughter which Raven also hated gresley) rebuilt gresley's engines. I mean sure the P2 "had to be rebuilt" but iirc it didn't go well since the lack of a 4th set of drivers reduced their ability on the Aberdeen line.

    • @FlyingScott
      @FlyingScott  6 місяців тому +5

      I would really like to know where you get your sources from because all evidence seems to point in circles as to whether Thompson disliked Gresley as a man.
      Furthermore it is undoubtedly false that the fourth driven axle with the P2s was what made the design. As the W1 went north to Scotland to perform the same duties which is did successfully, and the Peppercorn A2s and Gresley V2s did the same duties as the P2s and were pretty much synonymous with Aberdeen's heavy trains for their time.

      @TheLostGamerMan 6 місяців тому

      @FlyingScott well the gresley part comes from a friend I talked to the P2 part comes from a Train of Thought video on the P2 if I recall correctly the video said the lack of a driver set removed traction which was a slight issue because from what I understand the Aberdeen line had lots of slopes

    I personally think of the Thompson Pacific don't look that bad I mean they're basically peppercorn pacifics just with cylinders that are pushed more back in fact I think that if the Thompson Pacific cylinders what pushed forward they would look okay dare I say they would look good and they would look almost identical to the peppercorn Pacific aside from the front

    Always wondered what would happen if you put a double chimney well rotated 90° like this:
    Chimney normally: _
    Rotated: |
    Like would that do anything?

    Out of curiosity, how did the Thompson Pacifics compared to the peppercorn pacifics as I don’t think I’ve ever heard you mention them before

    • @FlyingScott
      @FlyingScott  4 місяці тому

      I must admit I've not come across a book within my possession that talks about both the A2s and A2/3s which does not use the A2s as the "proper" Pacific against the "poor" Thompson equivalent. However, considering both took over duties previously carried out by P2s, it cannot within reason be said that the Peppercorn A2s trounced the Thompsons in every area.
