In April 2013 at mile 23 my London marathon dream came to an end. My legs paralysed by cramp would take me no further. In my despair a lady a fellow runner a total stranger gave up her marathon took me by the hand and walked me to the finish line. I learned more about me about running and about the human spirit than I ever have in any successful race since. That lady in your race gave you her water. If you’d finished the race you would of missed that moment. Onward and upward Aubrey.
Genuinely speaking, this is one of the best experiences I’ve had in running. It’s done much more for me than I would have asked for. As I said, it would have been a better story for the organisers but in summary… this was a major lesson!
My only DNF was over 20 years ago, they do suck, but it's what you do after them that counts. Keep going Aubrey, you've absolutely smashed the past few months! 🚀🚀🚀
You’ll learn a lot from this experience. Running after illness and in a heatwave can be humbling, but you’re right when talk about having confidence in your underlying fitness and training. Some days you are the hammer, other days you are the nail - it was a “nail” day but you will bounce back in no time.
The best analogy I’ve ever heard in terms of running performance. I love this. It’s only right that I was a nail for once considering how many times I’ve been the hammer
Had a similar experience with my 10K this Sunday my main target was to finish. Unfortunately I tripped and twisted my ankle at the 2Km mark. Did a quick check and realised I couldn’t run. So I decided to walk(The most stupid decision). I did walk to the finish but by the time I reached home my ankle became the size of a football. Currently icing my ankle while I put this comment down. Can’t wait to be back at running. You’re an inspiration. Looking at someone who had a similar experience gives me the encouragement to get back out there. Thanks!
Truthfully there are so many of us that have these experiences. It’s just not any talk about it or feel like they can. I just thought I would share my “losses” but emphasise what I took from it. I learned so much and also fired me up for the next time. I wish you a quick recovery and take as much time as you need. How are you feeling?

I started running in 2022. I like bigger events, I've done lots of them. I did a half marathon in June at Dorney Lake (no shade!) where the temperature was 28 degrees from the start. It's a 4 lap course and I ran past my parked car 4 times! Each time I badly wanted to just get in and drive home. I had left a bag for safekeeping and this is the only thing that kept me going. Wanted to improve on a 1:57 pb but in the end was happy to even finish in 2:11. Great content, keep them coming!!
Thank you very much. Loved reading this too. It’s a very encouraging story putting myself in your shoes. Thank you for checking out the video. I sincerely appreciate it
@@AubreyRunning by the way, you must've overtaken me on the Asics 10K, Ben is alongside me in one of the race photos. My time was 53:25, now training for a sub-52 for the Vitality 10K and also for Chicago marathon in October.

Love your channel, Aubrey. Great, honest content. Of course you hope for everything to come together on race day. Sometimes you are just not so fortunate and have to deal with warm weather or illness. Or both! No worries. Plenty more opportunities to shine. Greeting from The Netherlands.
It’s amazing to know how far reaching my channel is! Thank you so much for that advice and encouragement and I completely agree with you! Truly grateful!
Oh yeah, the dreaded DNF ,happens to us all from Bekele right on down.I see this was 6 months ago ,running has so many real life applications which tends to lean toward growth and not defeat more often than not.A DNF is a true litmus test for belief in your true abilities but more importantly,a passion for the sport. As the song goes “ you gotta know when to hold, know when to fold”….been there a few times my friend.I’ll take wisdom over pride any day.🏃🏿♂️👊🏽
From another ‘big guy runner’ I know how the heat can kill a run dead. Here’s the thing though - you can’t mess around with the heat. If the body says stop in the heat you gotta stop. The alternative is possibly passing out and no one wants that. Keep going. Very motivational.
You know what, that’s exactly what happened because I knew that if I kept going, I would have done much more harm or even worse than that. I try to not have an ego or do this running stuff under someone else’s pressure. I keep real with myself and listen to my body. Thanks for that Gavin
Thank you for this. I bit more than I can chew and will have my first DNS and I am coming to terms that even though I paid money for it. It wasn't in my cards just mean next year will be the year. ❤
Hopefully you can defer it and not lose the money but good call in the end. I’m learning it’s better to keep health first. There will be many other opportunities
Man, I also experienced this for the first time this year. There was a 60 km race, but I had to get off at 35 for health reasons. I was very upset. So we take a step back to then take 2 steps forward! Hold on and everything will work out!
I feel like you should definitely give yourself credit. You went past a half marathon and bailed. There are so many people that can’t run that distance so please be proud of that. Well done!
All that works is not lost, and also I’ve achieved quite a lot. There will be many opportunity for improvement so we are definitely keeping it going. Thank you so much for the encouragement

Your main goal was sub-48. Did you have a back-up goal? Maybe that could have changed and you were able to finish. Sometimes things don’t work out as planned. Sometimes our goal is so big that we need to assess if we can actually do it based on the current situation we have. I ran my second 10k and set a PB under 1 hour beating my first 10k by 1 minute. Sometimes we just have to beat our previous race by seconds and continuously improve not necessary huge jumps in time. Most importantly take care of your health. Better to DNF than collapse on the race course. Best of wishes to your future races! You’ll crush it next time!
I was not racing, but this happened to me the other day. I went for a long run and at 3k my body said not today. So I listened and did it the next day instead.
I already don't have the expectation to do a PB in a race. Expecting this implies that you are in a top shape on race day and conditions are perfect.
