There's something so sweet about Beth not wanting to go all the way in because "new people oh no!!" and then Laurie notices like "oh no these are friends of mine they're fine they won't hurt you" like she's so shy and retreating and Laurie immediately wants to assure her she's okay and they aren't just randos... I love that so much. Laurie really does have this soft affection for all the March sisters like from jump I always did love that in the book and in the movies as well
Everyone talks about Jo And Laurie, and Amy and Laurie, but I feel the best relationship was the one between Beth and the grandpa. He found his lost child in her, and she had a paternal figure in him. I felt his pain when she died, because he lost his little girl again.

Claire Danes should have gotten an Oscar just for this scene alone----what a grand film! Beautiful and bittersweet---like life itself.

I think the new film has done a better job showing that relationship. This was very good though.
