    Growing up in China, Kobe was not just a sports icon, he was THE sports icon. I remember how in his last game, which took place at around 10am Chinese time, had not only students preparing for college entrance exam, but also the TEACHERS who were teaching the students together, ditch their classes and stream his last game in front of the class. Mind you the Chinese collegiate entrance exam is not only notorious for its difficulty, it’s also the single indicator of which university you’re going to. It’s things like these to know that you’re truly a legend

    I watched Kobe's entire career. There is one memory that I have of him that sums him up. It was Kobe's first year as a starter. The 76ers were the beasts of the east. They had Iverson and Mutombo, who was the best defensive center in the league and in his prime. Pre game huddle before the Lakers went out onto the court Kobe says: "I'm climbing Mount Mutombo tonignt". I thought to myself, this kid is cocky. Don't do it Kobe! First quarter, Kobe drives baseline and tries to dunk and Mutombo stuffs him clean. A few minutes later, Kobe tries it again and gets stuffed by Mutombo. This guy feared nothing and believed he could do anything if he just tried hard enough. He never saw defeat, he only saw setbacks and motivation to work harder. That's Kobe's legacy. Being an amazing basketball player was just a byproduct of having an amazing will to succeed.

    Great video. But I wish people would provide more context to that 2004 finals loss and performance. That team was only a superteam on paper. Fact is those were past their prime superstars with only Karl Malone really being effective through that run, and he was injured and a shell of himself by the Finals.
    As the series went on the Lakers were playing the likes of Slava Medvedenko, Kareem Rush, and Brian Cook. There were no offensive threats on the court besides Shaq and Kobe and the defense was able to absolutely smother Kobe. If you watch the series play by play you’d legit be surprised at how many times Kobe sets up teammates for makeable shots, but since the role player talent wasn’t there, they were often misses. People also blame Kobe for not giving Shaq the ball but again, if you watch the series, you’ll see that many Laker players didn’t get the ball to Shaq. Pistons defenders did a great job at denying those entry passes as well as Shaq’s lack of conditioning to fight for position with Big Ben. Contrary to popular belief Kobe didn’t hog the ball and dribble all over the court, he often moved the ball around initially and then got the ball back with low shot clocks. Not enough time to do much at that point but take a contested shot. And with the lengthy arms of Tayshawn Prince all over him that’s a tough ask. I would also argue that Big Ben Wallace had a more impactful series than Shaq did. The eye test would show you that Ben played with more intensity, passion, and hustle in crucial situations. Another part of the series people overlook is the great defense Kobe played against the Pistons guards. He was the only one who was able to slow down Billups and Rip. I would argue all that running around screens on the defensive end zapped his legs on his jump shot.
    That 04 loss gets purely put on Kobe but the media decided who their bad guy was going to be and ran with it.
    I also have a lot to say about the 2006 series agains the Suns too but this post is long enough 🐍

    That last part was absolutely true.
    I never liked Kobe when I was young. Number 8 to me was brash, selfish, and the type of guy you would love to see fall flat and get his comeuppance. But as I grew older, I found respect with his philosophy, drive and work ethic, which is why his last game as Number 24 was one of my most unforgettable games I ever watched. Though I always rooted against the Lakers in the 20 years he was there, he eventually changed my mind about him and he is rightfully in my personal Top 5

    Absolutely incredible work here, Clayton. You did a great job capturing the emotions of the Afro Era. I remember watching him growing up and just marveling at his aura. The crazy part is that you could have even gone deeper into the legacy of 8. That’s how special he was as a character. As someone from LA, there has never been anyone or any team since that has embodied the Hollywood mentality like Kobe. All we care about is being on top, and when we care, no place on earth can match our energy. Conversely, when you suck, nobody cares less. It’s the most polarizing place in the world. We have no time for sucking and Kobe didn’t either. The Mamba Mentality is a part of the social fabric, for better or worse, and I’m ecstatic to watch part 2 when it comes out. Great work, again, Clayton.

    In my opinion Kobe is the BEST basketball player of all time. He’s not the greatest, but in terms of pure skill, footwork and shot making ability, he’s probably the BEST player we’ve ever seen. MJ was more athletic and naturally gifted with his hang time and circus shot-making ability. But Kobe’s ability to make difficult shots consistently and his overall work ethic, as well as his mentality around how to win games and maximize the fundamentals like footwork and shot fakes makes him easily one of the best basketball players to ever live. He overachieved and he was already destined for greatness.

    • @c86alfonso
      @c86alfonso Рік тому

      Not when close, Kobe hardly make top 10. Those difficult shots that you're mentioning are the reason he missed the most shots ever in the NBA. He also played most of his career in a soft Era where there was no hand checking anymore. Just my 2 cents.

    How does one make up for leaving Kobe out of their “Making the Case” GOAT series? One drops a 2 part, hour plus long, video on his legend. It serves him and his uniqueness (he was just different, a phrase you’ll hear often from players when discussing Kobe) far better than the other series would have allowed. Well played sir!

    I think Phil Jackson is the greatest ego manager that the league has ever seen. You look at the buy-in he got with the Bulls and MJ, who was known for being fairly selfish until '91. Kobe and Shaq posed an even bigger problem in that sense - so much so that Jackson had to write a controversial book about how hard it was to manage both of them together. It's some achievement to have the team not erupt because of these two, long enough for the Lakers to 3-peat. And Phil Jackson is the ONLY coach who could do this.

Hes an icon, hes one of the most influential, but the man has so many negatives to not only his play on the floor but his attitude in the locker room.
